The SSU course collaborated with a course taught at Liceo Linguistico S. Weil in Treviglio, a province of Bergamo (Lombardy) in Italy. There were 10 students in the SSU course and 24 students in the partner course. Digital tools used in collaborative work included Zoom, WhatsApp, and Google Docs.ITL 400: Italian Translation PracticumIn this course, students will learn strategies for effective translation (English/Italian, Italian/English) and practice these skills using a variety of source materials. Emphasis will be placed on developing awareness of the relationship between language and culture. Prerequisite: ITL 202 or higher or equivalent proficiency in Italian as determined by the chair of the World Languages and Cultures department

Survey sent to students in "Teaching Reading, Writing, and Vocabulary to Multilingual Learners," a Spring 2021 graduate Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course taught by Melanie Gonzalez (Secondary and Higher Education) at Salem State University. The SSU course collaborated with a course taught at Universidad de Guanajuato in Guanajuato, Mexico. There were 18 students in the SSU course and 8 students in the partner course. Digital tools used in collaborative work included Zoom, Flipgrid, and Google Suite. The survey asked students to provide feedback on the COIL components of the course.EDS 799: Teaching Reading, Writing, and Vocabulary to Multilingual LearnersThis course prepares students to teach reading and writing to English learners (ELs) across content areas. Students will learn how to integrate academic reading, writing, and vocabulary development. The relationship between oral language development and literacy will be examined. The process of writing and writing in different genres across the curriculum will be linked to reading comprehension and reading different type of texts. Students will develop an original portfolio of literacy-based instructional materials, including the use of technology, in different content areas. Three lecture hours per week. Field-based assignments are required. Prerequisite: ENG770N or EDS770N Context and Culture in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Heart Rate Variability As A Measure Of Cardiovascular Health In Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the acute responses to exercise alone, heat therapy alone, and both exercise and heat therapy on leg blood flow, blood pressure, and heart rate variability in patients who have an injury below T6 thoracic vertebrae. Due to their inability to perform full-body exercises, they tend to have lower heart rate variability and a higher chance of cardiovascular disease. Briefly, medically stable men and women with spinal cord injury (SCI) will be recruited to take part in 3 trials consisting of matched exercise (Heart rate monitored during 20 minutes of rowing) with a post-exercise treatment of 45 minutes of hot (42C) leg bathing, matched exercise (Heart rate monitored during 20 minutes of rowing) with a post-exercise treatment of 45 minutes of thermoneutral (36C) leg bathing, and no exercise with a post-exercise treatment of 45 minutes of hot (42C) leg bathing. HRV will be tracked for 24 hours pre-trial, 12 hours post-trial, and overnight (rMSSD). Leg blood flow and finometer will be measured pre-trial and during 45 minutes into leg bath. Tympanic temp, HR, and brachial BP will be measured pre-trial and 5 minutes during leg bath. We hypothesize that post-exercise leg immersion in a hot bath will increase lower leg blood flow and overnight heart rate variability to a greater extent than either exercise alone or leg heating alone. This study highlights the importance of tracking the heart rate variability while finding alternatives (exercise; heat therapy) for patients with SCI because it serves as a critical pointer for any cardiovascular risk. This study will help the people with SCI and be used as a base study for future researchers.Sport and Movement Scienc

College Major and the Gender Pay Gap

Using the IPUMS USA database and the American Community Survey sample for the year of 2018, this paper seeks to explain how graduating with a bachelor’s degree in a female dominated major can affect post-graduation earned income. Increases in the percentage of female students within a field of study have negative effects on an individual’s earned income. Even after controlling for the percentage of female students within a degree field, there is an additional penalty to one’s income for working within a female dominated industry.Economic

    Pivotal Transition-A Women’s Skateboarding Documentary

    No full text
Stream documentary here: https://youtu.be/ZugjWOrueiU This documentary examines the current state of women’s skateboarding during a pivotal time in the industry. Social media has allowed what was once a small, marginalized community to blossom into something much greater. In addition, the induction of skateboarding into the next Summer Olympics places the sport at an interesting crossroads. I begin with a personal reflection of my own journey in skateboarding, acknowledging how the lack of visibility for women and the male dominance made participating in the sport intimidating and difficult. I transition to talk about how once I began meeting other women skateboarders and building a network of friends, it allowed me to find a sense of belonging in a community that was diverse, encouraging, resilient and inspiring. Through eleven formal interviews, including two with professional skateboarders, I discover through the skater’s perspective what makes the women’s skateboard community unique, what barriers women in skateboarding still face, and where women’s skateboarding stands today. I address the gender divide that exists in skateboarding, and I gather various perspectives on what further changes will help to erase the gender divide and further equality in skateboarding. My interviewees discuss where they see skateboarding going in the years to come and how the Olympics will impact the sport. Finally, each woman discusses the greatest thing they’ve gained from skateboarding and what makes them continue. The documentary is accompanied by three montages of skateboarding clips and original music by the artist Jaguar Sun.Communication
