    Nature-based Interventions in Occupational Therapy

    No full text
Nature-based activities have been shown to improve physical health, psychological wellbeing, and functional performance. Yet despite evidence on the psychophysiological benefits of these activities, few studies have been done on their use within occupational therapy practice. This presenter shares current literature on nature-based interventions, as well as resources for implementing nature-based interventions in practice. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: • Recognize the broad scope of activities that classify as nature-based • Identify three benefits of nature-based activities • Describe the relevance of nature-based interventions to the OT professio

Is the Lewis (LEW) Rat an Appropriate Control for the Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat (SHR)?

    No full text
The Spontaneously Hypertensive rat (SHR), the most widely accepted rodent-model of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is compared with its normotensive control the Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat looking for between strains differences in impulsive choice. But the WKY is not a proper control for the SHR when the procedure requires locomotion to choose. The SHR has deficiencies in dopamine activity in nucleus accumbens causing lower tolerance to delayed outcomes than the WKY. Locomotion and anomalies in dopamine in the Lewis (LEW) rat are like those in the SHR, suggesting that the LEW is a good control for the SHR. This possibility was analyzed with SHRs and LEWs responding to concurrent-chains procedures. Choice was measured in the initial link where two random interval schedules arranged entries to two terminal links, one delivering 1-food pellet immediately and the other delaying 4-food pellets 0.1, 5, 10, 20, 40, or 80 s. Impulsive choice increased with training, but the SHRs showed faster changes in preference, making more impulsive choices than the LEWs. The hyperbolic-decay model and the generalized matching law fitted the data well. Positive correlations between discounting rate and sensitivity of choice to the immediacy of reinforcement suggests compatibility between the models of choice.Psycholog

Childhood Education and CareWorld Languages and Culture

    Pisces

    Get PDF
Pisces is a collection of poems that give glimpses into my childhood, adolescent, and adulthood. They are also about learning how to heal, places that gave me serenity, and people that have inspired and molded me into who I am today. The title Pisces is a term that comes from astrology, and what happens to be my astrology sign. There are no poems that include or discuss my astrological sign. However, all my poems represent who I am, where I’ve come from, what inspires me, and events in my life that resonated with me the most. This collection is heavily influenced by some modern poets and their works, making use of some of their techniques to tell personal stories. Wallace Stevens and his selected poems in Sleeping on A Wing made me think about where writers get their inspiration from, and how we can see the world in a different way. In Stevens’s poem "Thirteen Ways of Looking at A Blackbird," he takes an object and looks at it from a variety perspective, exploring how one might encounter or see blackbirds. This collection uses this technique to write about objects that have sentimental value to me, such as my father’s military dog tags. These inspirations and themes represented within my collection not only represent my growth overtime, but my love for dance, my friends, and my family. I hope that my poems can shed light onto topics that are not talked about, and to send a message that you are never alone.EnglishSecondary and Higher Educatio

A Study of Semi-Strong Form of Market Efficiency: Active vs. Passive Portfolio Strategies - with Bloomberg Terminals

    Get PDF
This research paper gives a detailed analysis of semi-strong form of market efficiency when there are being used Active vs Passive portfolio strategies. This study shows if the market can be outperformed through the comparison of the returns of two portfolios with 20 stocks each. On a daily basis, market efficiency, through the semi-strong form, provides investors and all market participants with the same information and prices which respond respectively to the information given in any market. At this moment no one will have the possibility to outperform and profit anyone, given the same tools. Market efficiency won't allow investors to make a profit above the average because it gives them the opportunity to be rational and make reasonable choices. Both portfolios used to conduct this study were created through Bloomberg Terminals for a period of 12 weeks. Active portfolio stocks are chosen through an extensive analysis in detail as how the market was performing and what stocks were predicted to have the greatest return. On the other hand, the passive portfolio stocks were chosen not through an extensive analysis but are expected to have returns as closely as it can be possible. Each portfolio has equity indices; these portfolios will be compared with the market index for better insights and understanding. This study indicates if market is outperformed, or if market is efficient as well as will give the answer to questions like how market efficiency affects the economy, how would the economy be better off.Accounting and Financ

Using the Ketogenic Diet to Reduce the Incidence of Pediatric Seizures: Helping Children and Families to Find a Better Quality of Life

    Get PDF
Seizure disorders have both medical as well as quality of life implications for anyone experiencing them. The use of medications to control and manage this disorder is not always effective and may cause side effects that discourage compliance with the prescribed drugs. All of these concerns are especially problematic for children with seizures and their families. The use of diet modifications to control seizures is showing promise as an alternative to medications. The high fat, ketogenic diet as well as the low glycemic index diet are being investigated to control seizures in children. A systematic review of the literature was done in the CINAHL Plus database. The themes identified across the studies are (a) the ketogenic diet was effective in reducing seizures whereas the low glycemic index diet was not; (b) compliance with diet changes is a significant concern in this patient population; (c) parents view quality of life differently than the children with seizure disorders and this can impact diet adherence; and (d) how this diet interacts with medications and alters other body functions must be considered when using the ketogenic diet for seizure management. These results indicate an opportunity for nurses to work with families and the health care team to reduce the incidence of seizures, improve treatment compliance, and enhance the quality of life. A treatment option which provides for the needs and desires of both the individual and the parents can strengthen the family unit and promote healthy outcomes for all.Nursin

Balance Training: The Effectiveness Of Exercise In Traumatic Brain Injury

    No full text
The brain plays a major role in every function of the human body. Traumatic brain injuries can cause setbacks for individuals’ physical abilities, and that is why exercise is very important for this population. This internship consisted of a Neuro Fit program through Supportive Living, Inc. to support brain injury survivors. The main focus of the exercise program was to improve the balance of three participants by observing their independent abilities at week 1, and to consistently practice balance exercises for 12 consecutive weeks. Each exercise plan was created and catered to the three participants’ own physical abilities and goals. Each participant showed great improvement with balance skills, which resulted in better exercise form and ability to increase exercise intensity

Policies And Procedures For Nursing Home Visitation Post COVID-19 Vaccination: Woburn Rehabilitation And Nursing Center

    No full text
Nursing homes have been severely impacted by COVID-19, with high rates of infection, morbidity, and mortality. Visiting restrictions made since the start of the pandemic have had a significant impact on residents and visitors including family, loved ones, friends, guardians and staff. The Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) have collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to safely issue and expand visitations for nursing homes. With vaccinations rolling out fast and millions getting vaccinated, it paves the way for nursing home visitations. A survey was created and distributed to residents about their experiences and mental health during the restrictions. Seven out of ten responded to being happier and social since the visitation restriction was lifted

Nutritious Food for All: Lack of Access to Healthy Food Before and During the Pandemic

Financial issues in America have often caused an increase in unhealthy eating. Low income areas are often filled with cheap high calorie sugar foods. Since the global pandemic unemployment has gone up and more people have been struggling making money to live. Places like the Salem Food Pantry were created to help people with finance problems have access to healthy food. I used data of the amount of people who eat at the Salem pantry before COVID verses after COVID to compare numbers. It was noticed that since COVID many more people have been coming to the Salem Pantry. One of the head workers of the pantry named Mike has said many customers that get food at the pantry experienced financial issues because of unemployment
