This study will focus on the effectiveness of career education for ninth-grade vocational students in an urban setting using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, career cluster finder and guidance lessons. Evidence for the project will be collected using Naviance and classroom questionnaires. The results of these assessments can guide students to make informed decisions on which technical program they wish to pursue. Students will also begin their own research into possible career paths. This will give students the opportunity to uncover what educational requirements are needed for life after high school.School of Educatio
Perceptions On Comprehensive Sexuality Education In Alternative Education Programs
No full textCurrent research has shown that adolescents with developmental disabilities are at increased risk of sexual abuse, exploitation, pregnancy, and transmitted infections compared to the general population. It is within the scope of practice for occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) to educate and address sexuality with clients managing developmental disability. This study focuses both on the views and participation level of occupational therapy practitioners regarding comprehensive sexuality education (CSE). A quantitative, descriptive survey will be distributed online. Participants will be recruited electronically via national and local professional organizations and through social media networks. This survey will provide data to better understand the perspectives of OTPs with CSE and the barriers to participating in its delivery.Occupational Therap

Get PDFThis thesis examines texts by two queer Indigenous writers, Billy-Ray Belcourt (Driftpile Cree) and Deborah A. Miranda (Ohlone/Costanoan Esselen), to consider how writing about the self—what the Western literary canon commonly terms “memoir” or “autobiography”—is a form of healing in the afterlife of settler-colonialism. Through close readings of Belcourt’s essay collection A History of My Brief Body and Miranda’s Bad Indians: A Tribal Memoir, this thesis explores how Belcourt and Miranda both invent and reclaim the Indigenous self through the construction of metaphorical mosaics which, in their assembled wholeness, reflect a kind of “living through” of colonialism. Within this framework, this thesis goes on to argue that the stories of the self crafted by Belcourt and Miranda effectively reconstruct the queer Indigenous embodied self, writing against the colonial imagination with assertions of non-heteronormative sexual desire.Englis

Evaluating The Antibacterial Activity Of Greener Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles As An Example Of Sustainable Nanoscience In Early Undergraduate Curriculum
Get PDFSilver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can damage and destroy bacteria upon contact with each other, illustrating their ability to exert antibacterial properties. Traditionally, AgNPs are synthesized using sodium borohydride to reduce silver nitrate to metallic silver and a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coating would be used to further stabilize the particles. To develop a more sustainable and economical AgNPs synthesis, lemon extract was substituted as the reducing and stabilizing agent. Furthermore, these AgNPs were characterized using the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometer over time, to evaluate the stability of the particles. Then, the AgNPs were tested against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) to which their inhibition rings were measured. In this thesis, our preliminary data have shown that the greener synthesis of AgNPs using lemon extract had been effective against both type of bacteria. Additionally, the greener synthetic method was developed using a hot water bath, over the usual use of either an ultrasonic or thermostatic bath. Because of that, this budget- and eco-friendly alternative method could potentially be used in a first-year chemistry laboratory class to introduce students to the multidisciplinary field of nanotechnology by merging green chemistry and biology.Chemistry and Physic
A Literature Review Of Alternative Approaches To Escape Extinction In Feeding Protocols
No full textThis literature review investigated different treatment packages for feeding protocols in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A literature review was conducted on case studies that were conducted on children under the age of eighteen with at least one problem behavior related to feeding. The case studies included were peer-reviewed and published in a journal article in the past twelve years. The review considered a set of variables for each study that included: the number of children who were treated, the effectiveness of the treatment, consistency of results between participants, consistency of results across studies, and follow up treatment effectiveness. Based on the literature reviewed, the results indicated there was no single treatment package that consistently demonstrates a decrease in inappropriate mealtime behavior and an increase in acceptable mealtime behavior. High probability sequences, noncontingent reinforcement, behavioral skills training, least-to-most prompting, and lag schedules of reinforcement were at least moderately effective at decreasing inappropriate mealtime behavior and increasing appropriate mealtime behavior without using escape extinction.Psycholog
Patients, Providers, And Perceptions: Achieving Quality Of Care When Goals Are Not Aligned
No full textDespite asthma remaining one of the most common chronic pediatric conditions, patients are still constantly hospitalized due to poor adherence to the treatment plan. Patient-centered care requires professionals to understand what barriers affect controlled asthma during healthy childhood/adolescent development. This literature review consists of seven key articles from the CINAHL and PubMed databases with common themes identified (a) providers and patients have different goals of effective care; (b) nurses can help identify family roles to manage asthma care while building patient resilience and (c) identifying factors that decrease treatment compliance. These themes highlight the need for nurses to expand their role as medical caregivers and educators into a mediator between pediatric patients, their family members, and their providers. At the same time, natural family roles need to be respected and patients can care for themselves with little distractions from having a healthy childhood. This helps to improve the quality of self-care and decrease hospital readmissions in pediatric patients with asthma.Nursin
Don't Tread On Climate Policy: American Nationalism And U.S. Climate Policy
Get PDFThe United States has a turbulent relationship with both domestic and international climate change policy, fueled by American nationalism. While there are robust fields of research on both nationalism and climate policy separately, research on connections between the two has only just begun in the past few years. When that scope is further narrowed to specifically American nationalism and U.S. climate policy, the field becomes even more sparse. I argue that this void in the conversation is a significant grey area that gives anti-climate actors particular power in determining the fate of U.S. climate policy. Utilizing messaging that plays to the political hegemony of American nationalism has enabled anti-climate actors to kill, weaken, or delay indefinitely a number of important pieces of climate policy. In this paper I will compare and contrast four such policies: the Kyoto Protocol, the American Clean Energy and Security Act (cap and trade), The Clean Power Plan, and The Paris Agreement. I will identify a thread of common themes through each policy, including organized American nationalists, anti-globalism nationalist messaging, American nationalism in electoral politics, mistrust of the United Nations, and examples of American exceptionalism and isolationism. In an age where we have dwindling time to mitigate the worst effects of the climate crisis, understanding the systemic role ideologies like American nationalism play in disrupting climate policy is crucial.Geography and Sustainabilit
