    No full text
Professor Lisa Reyes Mason, University of Denver, will address climate change as a social justice issue of our times that social work must confront. The talk will overview the climate crisis, give examples of how social workers are already engaged with this pressing issue, and provide practical steps that any social worker can take. Q&A and discussion with the audience will follow the talk

High Resolution Record Of Ice Rafted Detritus In Central North Atlantic Deep-Sea Sediment Core V30-100

    No full text
High-resolution records from North Atlantic deep-sea sediments have been instrumental in documenting millennial-scale climate fluctuations during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 4-1, including variations in concentrations of ice-rafted detritus (IRD) related to massive iceberg discharges from Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. We have analyzed 149 closely spaced samples from the top 2 meters of North Atlantic piston core V30-100 (44°06.5’N, 32°30’W) and produced detailed records of %IRD (%lithics=(#lithic grains >150 microns)/(#lithic grains >150 microns + #planktic foraminifera >150 microns)*100), IRD per gram (lithic grains >150 microns per gram sediment), and planktic forams per gram (whole planktic foraminifers >150 microns per gram sediment). %IRD reveals 4 distinct intervals of >80% IRD coupled with consistently very low forams per gram at 40-48cm, 80-88cm, 137-149cm, and 179-184cm separated by long intervals of significantly lower IRD (<20%). The IRD per gram (lithics per gram) is consistently above 3000 lithics per gram during the intervals of high %IRD but show considerably more variability. %IRD and lithics per gram show a distinct lack of correlation at higher values. This is likely due to the influence of changes in planktic foram production affecting our proxies of IRD input. Upon analysis of our high-resolution IRD records with the low-resolution carbonate record from V30-100 as well as our detailed comparison to other IRD records from the Central North Atlantic (Hemming, 2004 and Surette et al., 2020) suggests that the 4 intervals of high %IRD in V30-100 correspond to well documented Heinrich events that occurred in the North Atlantic during the last glacial interval (MIS 4-2). We have preliminarily correlated the high IRD event centered around 180cm to H5, and the interval centered around 145cm to H4. The IRD events centered around 85cm and 45cm have been correlated to H2 and H1, respectively. If these correlations are correct, H3 has not been recorded in V30-100.Geological Science

Sensory Overload in a Workout Environment: Managing Sensory Overload After a Traumatic Brain Injury

    No full text
This case study analyzed a participant over a ten week period in an exercise environment dealing with sensory overload after a Traumatic Brain injury. The project was designed to learn what triggers the participant and makes them feel overstimulated, and to learn how to minimize those triggers and better manage their overstimulation while working out. Working closely with the participants twice a week for 10 weeks, a behavioral log was created to keep track of the environment around him and any triggers that could have caused the participant to feel overstimulated. The results have shown that loud noises and sudden movements have been a main trigger, along with being over instructed during his workout routine

An Investigation Into Which Techniques Of Play Therapy Are Most Effective Across A Spectrum Of Behaviors In Children

    Get PDF
Play Therapy, a type of therapy in which play is used to help a client share their emotions and work through their issues, is a globally used practice (Cassado-Frankel, 2016). It is used to help many children combat their trauma, anxiety, depression, and several other disorders and conditions. This thesis reports on a meta-analysis of 11 previous research studies in the psychological literature research conducted on this subject and an analysis of data collected via an original survey completed by seventeen child therapists in the New England area who use play therapy on a regular basis with their clients. Consistent with previous studies in the literature, survey respondents reported that play therapy is very effective in helping children clients with their struggles. The survey found that the participants believed a play therapy session should be 30-60 minutes on average in order for it to be effective. The survey also found several patterns in which types of play therapy are most commonly practiced for different types of conditions. For example, the most preferred types of play therapy to practice were Child- Centered Play Therapy and Non-Directive Play Therapy. Another pattern found was that play therapy was most popularly practiced with clients who have anxiety disorders and least used with clients who have oppositional defiant disorder.Psycholog

An Exploration Of The Exclusion Of Affinity Groups In The Arts Through The Lens Of Wendy Wasserstein's The Heidi Chronicles

    No full text
Theatre serves as a reflection of the human experience, but not every human's experience is reflected on and off the stage. Actors and directors often say that there are no small roles, only small actors, which applies to every aspect of the theatre. However, not everyone is treated as though they have an equal role in the world; Women and the LGBTQ+ community are just two of the marginalized groups commonly underrepresented in all of the arts. As a queer, femme-presenting individual, I have often wished to see myself on the stage, but the theatre has fallen short. I used Wendy Wasserstein's The Heidi Chronicles to explore injustices against women and other affinity groups not spoken for in the arts and the world through the lends of the theatre. The cast and creative team of this piece included others who have also wished to see people like them in their disciplines, which warranted discussion of out own experiences throughout the creative process. In directing Wasserstein's piece, I focused on asking how women and the LGBTQ+ community are forgotten about in the arts and what can be done to remedy the lack fo representation. The theatre aims to start conversations and contribute to making a difference. I want my creative peers and audiences to be thinking about the inequities they see in their own lives and ask questions that spark change.Theatre and Speech Communicatio
