    Relationships were a casualty when pandemic ethics and everyday clinical ethics collided

    The young woman who had gone into premature labour had just returned home after visiting family overseas. The UK rules at that time required her to self-isolate for two weeks after she got back, and she gave birth before that period of quarantine had ended. Hospital infection prevention and control measures meant that, having delivered her baby, she had to stay, alone, in her specifically designated accommodation. She was not allowed to visit her baby on the ward, despite having twice tested negative for Covid-19. Appeals by her baby’s healthcare team to make an exception for her were unsuccessful. The baby died a week later – and only when the baby was dying, were the rules relaxed. Then, for the first and only time in its short life, were the baby’s mother and father able to be together with their child.

    Supporting employers and their employees with mental hEalth conditions to remain eNgaged and producTive at wORk (MENTOR) : a feasibility randomised controlled trial

    Employees with mental health conditions often struggle to remain in employment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these employees faced additional stressors, including worsening mental health and work productivity. In 2020, as part of a larger programme of work called the Mental Health and Productivity Pilot (MHPP), we developed a new early intervention (MENTOR) that jointly involved employees, managers, and a new professional (Mental Health Employment Liaison Worker (MHELW). The intervention involved trained MHELWs delivering ten sessions to employees with existing mental health conditions and managers (three individual sessions and four joint sessions) over twelve weeks. These sessions aimed to improve psychological flexibility, interpersonal relationships, and engagement of employees. This feasibility randomised controlled trial aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention from the perspective of employees and managers using a mixed methods approach. The intervention was largely considered feasible and acceptable. Initial findings suggest there may be benefits for employee's productivity, mental health, and managers mental health knowledge. Logistical challenges acted as a barrier to the participation and retention of participants in the trial. The major strengths of this study were the co-design and inter-disciplinary approach taken. Overall, findings suggest that this novel intervention has potential but needs some adjustments and testing in a larger sample

    Latent vector optimization-based generative image steganography for consumer electronic applications

    In consumer electronic applications, to transmit secret images securely, it is required to explore the advanced covert communication technology, i.e., Generative Image Steganography (GIS). However, the existing GIS schemes suffer from the issues of poor stego-image quality and limited hiding capacity. Consequently, these GIS schemes cannot meet the requirements of consumer electronic applications, in which massive secret information needs to be transmitted securely. To address the above issues, we propose a Latent Vector Optimization (LVO)-based GIS scheme, in which the information hiding is implemented by the flow-based generative model during the image generation. Specifically, the LVO algorithm is introduced to compute the hiding probability of each element of latent vector according to its impact on the quality of the stego-image generated from the latent vector. Then, it hides more information in elements with higher hiding probability. The extensive experiments demonstrate that, compared to current GIS schemes, the proposed LVO-based GIS scheme generates higher-quality images, while maintaining hiding capacity (up to 5.0 bpp) and accurate information extraction (almost 100% accuracy rate)

    Efficient parallel processing of all-pairs shortest paths on multicore and GPU systems

    Finding the shortest path between any two nodes in a graph, known as the All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP), is a fundamental problem in many data analysis problems, such as supply chains in logistics, routing protocols in IoT networks that involve consumer electronics as well as data analysis for social networking apps and Google Maps apps used by the general public on their smartphones. In this work, we present a novel approach to solve the APSP problem on multicore and GPU systems. In our approach, a graph is first pre-processed by partitioning the graph into sub-graphs. Then, each sub-graph is processed in parallel using any existing shortest path algorithm such as the Floyd-Warshall algorithm or Dijkstra’s algorithm. Finally, the distance results in individual sub-graphs are aggregated to obtain the distances of APSP for the entire graph. OpenMP and CUDA are used to implement the parallelization on multicore CPUs and GPUs, respectively. We conduct the extensive experiments with both synthetic and real-world graphs on the JADE (Joint Academic Data Science Endeavour) cluster at the University of Oxford, which is part of the Tier-2 high performance computing facilities in the UK. In the experiments, we compared our methods with three existing APSP algorithms in the literature, including n-Dijkstra, ParAPSP and SuperFW. The results show that our methods outperform the existing algorithms, achieving the speedup of up to 8.3x over Dijkstra

    A pub for England : race and class in the time of the nation

    The pub is often romanticised as a site of idyllic English ‘working-class’ sociability that is now under threat. Such melancholic invocations of the pub’s plight are invoked amid the wider resurgence of a racialised English nationalism that makes particularly effective claims to a ‘white working-class’ and their putatively ‘left-behind’ anguish. This article challenges such dominant accounts, juxtaposing such racially defensive readings of the working-class pub against the otherwise overlooked phenomenon of England’s ‘desi pubs’ (Indian-run pubs) through recourse to David Jesudason’s Desi Pubs as well as drawing upon the accounts of the founder of Glassy Junction, a historic desi pub in Southall. Importantly, this overdue engagement of ‘desi pubs’ is considered not through frameworks of race and nation alone but also within conjunctural webs of capitalist stratification and subjectivity. Ultimately, we argue that attentiveness to desi pubs helps draw out convivial modalities of working-class sociability that exist outside of both otherwise ascendant racial and nationalist grievance frames and the sanitised but also prohibitive consumerist webs of aspirational distinction and individualism
