    Quantifying microplastic dispersion due to density effects

    An experimental study was conducted on how polymer density affects the transport and fate of microplastics in aquatic flows. For the first time, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were chemically stained and tested using solute transport techniques and velocities found among rivers in the natural environment (0.016 – 0.361 m/s). The movement of 3D-polymers with densities ranging from 0.9 – 1.4 g/cm³ was quantified in a laboratory flume scaled to simulate open-channel flows in fluvial systems. Except for PP, in most conditions microplastics exhibited similar transport characteristics to solutes regardless of density and established solute transport models were successfully implemented to predict their transport and fate. Mass recoveries and ADE routing model demonstrated microplastic deposition and resuspension was associated with polymer density below critical velocity thresholds ≤ 0.1 m/s. When density becomes the dominant force at these slower velocities, concentrations of denser than water microplastics will be momentarily or permanently deposited in channel beds and microplastics follow the classical Shields sediment transport methodology. This data is the first to provide microplastic suspension and deposition thresholds based on river velocity and polymer density, making a key contribution to research predicting microplastic fate and organismal exposure

    Understanding the impact of ammonium ion substitutions on heterogeneous ice nucleation

    Understanding the mechanisms underpinning heterogeneous ice nucleation in the presence of ionic inclusions is important for fields such as cryopreservation and for improved models of climate and weather prediction. Feldspar and ammonium are both present in significant quantities in the atmosphere, and experimental evidence has shown that feldspar can nucleate ice from ammonium-containing solutions at temperatures warmer than water alone. In recent work, Whale hypothesised that this increase in nucleation temperature is due to an increase in configurational entropy when an ammonium ion is included in the ice hydrogen bond network (T. F. Whale, J. Chem. Phys., 2022, 156, 144503). In this work, we investigate the impact of the inclusion of an ammonium ion on the hydrogen bond network by direct enumeration of the number of structures found using Rick's algorithm. We also determine the energy of these systems and thus compare the effects of enthalpy and entropy to test Whale's hypothesis. We find that the inclusion of an ammonium ion increases the total number of configurations under conditions consistent with a realistic surface charge. We also find that the enthalpic contribution is dominant in determining the location of the ammonium ion within the structure, although we note that this neglects other practicalities of ice nucleation

    Translanguaging : a paradigm shift for ELT theory and practice

    Translanguaging theory and pedagogy have emerged as central to the recent multilingual turn in educational linguistics and language teaching, including ELT. This article will explore translanguaging from theoretical and practical perspectives, aiming to clarify what it is and is not claiming, and what types of pedagogic practice it advocates, both in its stronger and weaker forms. I argue that a paradigm shift is occurring in the field, parallel with the shift in understanding of the nature of language itself that underpins both translanguaging theory and integrationism in linguistics. Implications for practice in ELT are also explored, including a reorientation concerning the goals of language teaching, a recognition of English as a social construct with traditions of use rather than immutable rules, and a repositioning of the many translingual teachers around the world as the experts at the centre of the multilingual turn that is defining early twenty-first century language pedagogy

    Economic insecurity and the demand of populism in Europe

    We document the spiral of populism in Europe and the direct and indirect role of economic insecurity shocks. Using survey data on individual voting, we make two contributions to the literature. (i) Economic insecurity shocks have a significant impact on the populist vote share, directly as demand for protection, and indirectly through the induced changes in trust and attitudes. (ii) A key consequence of increased economic insecurity is a drop in turnout. The impact of this largely neglected turnout effect is substantial: conditional on voting, when economic insecurity increases, almost 40% of the induced change in the vote for a populist party comes from the turnout channel

    Plectic structures in p-adic de Rham cohomology

    Given a Hilbert modular form for a totally real field F, and a prime p split completely in F, the f-eigenspace in p-adic de Rham cohomology has a family of partial filtrations and partial Frobenius maps, indexed by the primes of F above p. The general plectic conjectures of Nekovář and Scholl suggest a “plectic comparison isomorphism” comparing these structures to étale cohomology. We prove this conjecture in the case under some mild assumptions; and for general F we prove a weaker statement which is strong evidence for the conjecture, showing that the plectic Hodge filtration has a canonical splitting given by intersecting with simultaneous eigenspaces for the partial Frobenii

    EV-Tach : a handheld rotational speed estimation system with event camera

    Rotational speed is one of the important metrics to be measured for calibrating electric motors in manufacturing, monitoring engines during car repairs, detecting faults in electrical appliance and more. However, existing measurement techniques either require prohibitive hardware (e.g., high-speed camera) or are inconvenient to use in real-world application scenarios. In this paper, we propose, EV-Tach, a novel handheld rotational speed estimation system that utilizes emerging imaging sensors known as event cameras or dynamic vision sensors (DVS). The pixels of DVS work independent and trigger an event as soon as a per-pixel intensity change is detected, without global synchronization like CCD/CMOS cameras. Thus, its unique design features high temporal resolution and generates sparse events, which benefits the high-speed rotation estimation. To achieve accurate and efficient rotational speed estimation, a series of signal processing algorithms are specifically designed for the event streams generated by event cameras on an embedded platform. First, a new cluster-centroids initialization module is proposed to initialize the centroids of the clusters to address the issue that common clustering approaches are easy to fall into a local optimal solution without proper initial centroids. Second, an outlier removal module is designed to suppress the background noise caused by subtle hand movements and host devices vibrations. Third, a coarse-to-fine alignment strategy is proposed with Iterative closest point (ICP)-based event stream alignment to obtain angle of rotation and achieve accurate estimation for rotational speed in a large range. With these bespoke components, EV-Tach is able to extract the rotational speed accurately from the event stream produced by an event camera recording rotary targets. According to our extensive evaluations under controlled and practical experiment settings, the Relative Mean Absolute Error (RMAE) of EV-Tach is as low as 0.3‰ which is comparable to the state-of-the-art laser tachometer under fixed measurement mode. Moreover, EV-Tach is robust to subtle movement of user’s hand and dazzling light outdoor, therefore, can be used as a handheld device under challenging lighting condition, where the laser tachometer fails to produce reasonable results. To speed up the processing of EV-Tach and reduce its resource consumption on embedded devices, VoxelGrid filtering is applied to significantly downsample the event streams by merging the events within the same 3D-VoxelGrid while preserving its formation in spatial-temporal domain. At last, we implement EV-Tach on Raspberry Pi and the evaluation results show that the downsampling process preserves the high measurement accuracy while saving the computation speed and energy consumption by approximately 8 times and 30 times in average

No proof of this statement survives in his papers, and it has been suggested that a proof would have been impossible using the methods available at the time. We argue that this assertion is unduly pessimistic. Moreover, one fragmentary document, dismissed as a triviality and misunderstood, looks suspiciously like cryptic notes related to this result. We give an elementary proof of Galois’s statement, explain why it is likely that he would have been aware of the methods involved, and discuss the potential relevance of the fragment

    Explainable recommender with geometric information bottleneck

    Explainable recommender systems can explain their recommendation decisions, enhancing user trust in the systems. Most explainable recommender systems either rely on human-annotated rationales to train models for explanation generation or leverage the attention mechanism to extract important text spans from reviews as explanations. The extracted rationales are often confined to an individual review and may fail to identify the implicit features beyond the review text. To avoid the expensive human annotation process and to generate explanations beyond individual reviews, we propose to incorporate a geometric prior learnt from user-item interactions into a variational network which infers latent factors from user-item reviews. The latent factors from an individual user-item pair can be used for both recommendation and explanation generation, which naturally inherit the global characteristics encoded in the prior knowledge. Experimental results on three e-commerce datasets show that our model significantly improves the interpretability of a variational recommender using the Wasserstein distance while achieving performance comparable to existing content-based recommender systems in terms of recommendation behaviours

    Slow release of a synthetic auxin induces formation of adventitious roots in recalcitrant woody plants

    Clonal propagation of plants by induction of adventitious roots (ARs) from stem cuttings is a requisite step in breeding programs. A major barrier exists for propagating valuable plants that naturally have low capacity to form ARs. Due to the central role of auxin in organogenesis, indole-3-butyric acid is often used as part of commercial rooting mixtures, yet many recalcitrant plants do not form ARs in response to this treatment. Here we describe the synthesis and screening of a focused library of synthetic auxin conjugates in Eucalyptus grandis cuttings and identify 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid–L-tryptophan-OMe as a competent enhancer of adventitious rooting in a number of recalcitrant woody plants, including apple and argan. Comprehensive metabolic and functional analyses reveal that this activity is engendered by prolonged auxin signaling due to initial fast uptake and slow release and clearance of the free auxin 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid. This work highlights the utility of a slow-release strategy for bioactive compounds for more effective plant growth regulation
