(Political) political liberalism and the constitutional project
This essay follows Professors Alessandro Ferrara and Frank Michelman’s dialogic journey into the legitimation-by-constitution idea, which they submit as the institutional expression of political liberalism in Legitimation by Constitution: A Dialogue on Political Liberalism, to illustrate the challenges for contemporary philosophy of political liberalism in its transposition to the constitutional project. It argues that Ferrara and Michelman’s liberal endeavor to answer the fundamental questions surrounding political liberalism rests on a normative conception of identity, which eventually leads them to a dilemma: the project of constitutional democracy is sustained by a liberal ethos, while it is tasked to accommodate those who do not value the liberal form of life. Instead of choosing between the project of constitutional democracy and their liberal soul, Ferrara and Michelman eventually offer a thin constitutional account of political liberalism resembling the international legal order amidst the retrenchment of the liberal ethos. It contends that what liberal democracies need from political liberalism in battling antiliberal forces is not more political philosophy but rather something akin to what Jeremy Waldron calls “political political theory.” It is suggested that political liberalism take a political turn to confront antiliberal forces with an enriched rather than diluted constitutional project
Hybrid administrative interfaces : authority delegation and reversion in strategic alliances
Steering committees are pivotal for governing complex collaborations by consensus to facilitate coordination and knowledge sharing. Although consensus-based governance promotes mutuality, it can also cause deadlocks, stalling expeditious decision making. We examine the conditions under which alliance partners delegate decision-making authority to steering committees as well as the conditions under which authority over discordant matters can be relocated to one of the alliance partners. We argue that joint coordination concerns increase the likelihood of authority delegation, whereas the higher costs and stakes associated with decision stalemates provide grounds for authority reversion. Empirical analyses of strategic alliances in the biopharmaceutical industry support our arguments. Our paper demonstrates the versatility of contractually defined administrative interfaces in alliance governance, allowing partners to coordinate bilaterally and adapt hierarchically as and when required
An adaptive targeted field experiment : job search assistance for refugees in Jordan
We introduce an adaptive targeted treatment assignment methodology for field experiments. Our Tempered Thompson Algorithm balances the goals of maximizing the precision of treatment effect estimates and maximizing the welfare of experimental participants. A hierarchical Bayesian model allows us to adaptively target treatments. We implement our methodology in Jordan, testing policies to help Syrian refugees and local jobseekers to find work. The immediate employment impacts of a small cash grant, information and psychological support are small, but targeting raises employment by 1 percentage-point (20%). After four months, cash has a sizable effect on employment and earnings of Syrians

Consent under coercion : the partial validity account
How is the validity of our consent, and others’ moral permission to act on our consent affected by coercion? Everyone agrees that in cases of two-party coercion—when X coerces Y to do something with or for X—the consent of the coerced is invalid, and the coercer is not permitted to act upon the consent they receive. But coercers and the recipients of consent are not always identical. Sometimes a victim, Y, agrees to do something to, with, or for Z because they are being coerced by X. Recently, several philosophers have argued that consent under third-party coercion can be fully valid. We argue that this view has troubling implications. We develop a novel view of consent in third-party coercion cases, which we call the partial validity account. The core idea is that, under severe coercion, Y’s consent is at most partially valid—it reduces the strength of, but does not completely dissolve, Z’s consent-sensitive duties. We argue that the partial validity account gets the right results in important cases and explains the moral factors at play better than alternative accounts
Physical activity and health-related quality of life of patients with chronic knee pain after total knee replacement : analysis of the PEP-TALK trial
Background
Chronic pain is a major challenge for some people after total knee replacement (TKR). The changing impact of this complication during the first post-operative year remains unclear. This analysis aimed to examine how physical activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) evolved over the first year after TKR for patients with and without post-operative chronic knee pain.
Methods
We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a randomised controlled trial (PEP-TALK), which tested the effectiveness of a behaviour change physiotherapy intervention compared with usual rehabilitation after TKR. Mean UCLA Activity Score and EQ-5D-5L for participants with and without chronic knee pain (14 points or lower in the Oxford Knee Score Pain Subscale (OKS-PS) at six months post-TKR) were compared at six and 12 months post-TKR.
Results
Data from 83 participants were analysed. For those with chronic knee pain, UCLA Activity Score remained unchanged between baseline to six months (mean: 3.8 to 3.8), decreasing at 12 months (3.0). Those without post-operative chronic knee pain reported improved physical activity from baseline to six months (4.0 vs 4.9), plateauing at 12 months (4.9). Participants with chronic knee pain reported lower baseline HRQoL (0.28 vs 0.48). Both groups improved health utility over one year. Of those without chronic pain at six months, 8.5% returned to chronic pain by 12 months.
Conclusions
Monitoring clinical outcomes after six months may be indicated for those at risk of chronic pain post-TKR. Further, sufficiently powered analyses are warranted to increase the generalisability of this exploratory analyses’ results
Understanding improved capacity retention at 4.3 V in modified single crystal Ni-rich NMC//graphite pouch cells at elevated temperature
The capacity retention of commercially-sourced pouch cells with single crystal Al surface-doped Ni-rich cathodes (LiNi0.834Mn0.095Co0.071O2) is examined. The degradation-induced capacity fade becomes more pronounced as the upper-cut-off voltage (UCV) increases from 4.2 V to 4.3 V (vs. graphite) at a fixed cycling temperature (either 25 or 40 °C). However, cycles with 4.3 V UCV (slightly below the oxygen loss onset) show better capacity retention upon increasing the cycling temperature from 25 °C to 40 °C. Namely, after 500 cycles at 4.3 V UCV, cycling temperature at 40 °C retains 85.5% of the initial capacity while cycling at 25 °C shows 75.0% capacity retention. By employing a suite of electrochemical, X-ray spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry techniques, we attribute the temperature-induced improvement of the capacity retention at high UCV to the combined effects of Al surface-dopants, electrochemically resilient single crystal Ni-rich particles, and thermally-improved Li kinetics translating into better electrochemical performance. If cycling remains below the lattice oxygen loss onset, improved capacity retention in industrial cells should be achieved in single crystal Ni-rich cathodes with the appropriate choice of cycling parameter, particle quality, and particle surface dopants
Abstract and embodied : the political economy of the French Revolution
The political economy of the French Revolution struggled to reconcile the promises of economic abstraction and the challenges of embodying wealth. In their attempts to realize these dual aims, revolutionaries drew not only on Enlightenment ideas about laissez-faire but also on an economic theology of money and consumption with roots in alchemy and the Catholic sacrament of the Eucharist. Both strains of thought had radicalizing effects. Proponents of laissez-faire cast society as a self-regulating field of reciprocal exchanges, thereby obviating the need for fiscal redistribution and frustrating those demanding social welfare and manufacturing subsidies. When the anticipated prosperity of laissez-faire failed to materialize, revolutionaries put their hopes in the new paper currency, the assignat, believing that it would generate wealth ad infinitum and circulate it justly. Breaking with laissez-faire but still committed to economic theology, radicals such as Jacques Roux and Maximilien Robespierre joined the Parisian popular movement in justifying government oversight to ensure the satisfaction of an ever-expanding panoply of needs. Whereas historians now tend to explain the Terror as the outcome of ideological, psychological and institutional contingencies, the fate of laissez-faire suggests that political radicalization was intimately linked to revolutionaries’ abstract economic principles and beliefs
Metadynamics for transition paths in irreversible dynamics
Stochastic systems often exhibit multiple viable metastable states that are long-lived. Over very long timescales, fluctuations may push the system to transition between them, drastically changing its macroscopic configuration. In realistic systems, these transitions can happen via multiple physical mechanisms, corresponding to multiple distinct transition channels for a pair of states. In this paper, we use the fact that the transition path ensemble is equivalent to the invariant measure of a gradient flow in pathspace, which can be efficiently sampled via metadynamics. We demonstrate how this pathspace metadynamics, previously restricted to reversible molecular dynamics, is in fact very generally applicable to metastable stochastic systems, including irreversible and time-dependent ones, and allows to estimate rigorously the relative probability of competing transition paths. We showcase this approach on the study of a stochastic partial differential equation describing magnetic field reversal in the presence of advection
Empirical bias-reducing adjustments to estimating functions
We develop a novel, general framework for reduced-bias M-estimation from asymptotically unbiased estimating functions. The framework relies on an empirical approximation of the bias by a function of derivatives of estimating function contributions. Reduced-bias M-estimation operates either implicitly, solving empirically adjusted estimating equations, or explicitly, subtracting the estimated bias from the original M-estimates, and applies to partially or fully specified models with likelihoods or surrogate objectives. Automatic differentiation can abstract away the algebra required to implement reduced-bias M-estimation. As a result, the bias-reduction methods, we introduce have broader applicability, straightforward implementation, and less algebraic or computational effort than other established bias-reduction methods that require resampling or expectations of products of log-likelihood derivatives. If M-estimation is by maximising an objective, then there always exists a bias-reducing penalised objective. That penalised objective relates to information criteria for model selection and can be enhanced with plug-in penalties to deliver reduced-bias M-estimates with extra properties, like finiteness for categorical data models. Inferential procedures and model selection procedures for M-estimators apply unaltered with the reduced-bias M-estimates. We demonstrate and assess the properties of reduced-bias M-estimation in well-used, prominent modelling settings of varying complexity
