Creeping perennial weeds have strong negative impacts on arable production. The common control practices are intensive inversion tillage and chemical herbicides. However, these traditional methods negatively affect non-target species and the environment. The objective of the SusCrop-ERA-NET funded European project ‘AC/DC-weeds’ is to implement agro-ecological management for creeping perennials in arable farming. The overall aim of this project is to reduce plough-tillage in organic and conventional farming, and to replace glyphosate in the latter system. From 2019 to 2022, this project involves seven partners from five European countries. Focusing on three important perennial species in central and northern Europe (Sonchus arvensis, Cirsium arvense and Elymus repens), AC/DC-weeds will thoroughly study the ecology and agronomical management of these species through systematic literature reviews and experiments. Novel agro-ecological management of these species is examined in field experiments and semi-field approaches. Innovative technology will be used to identify and monitor the distribution of these weeds on fields. Qualitative models are developed to make use of existing knowledge and expertise of the influences on perennial infestations in management decisions. A graphic web tool will enable visualization of the growth of the species and the effects of weed management. Environmental and economic evaluations on different weed management accompany the experimental and modelling work

Buckwheat as an interesting niche culture enjoys increasing popularity in Switzerland. In variety trials (2015-2018) promising varieties for grain use have been identified. Besides their positive agronomic properties they grow shorter. On areas with increased weed pressure, this can lead to problems, although buckwheat is relatively competitive due to good early vigour. However, no herbicide is currently authorized in Switzerland, and no information about mechanical weed control in buckwheat is available to the authors. To close this gap, in 2018 and 2019 various mechanical weed control measures were compared with a chemical at two sites each. The randomized small plot trial was conducted with three buckwheat varieties with different plant length (short, middle and long) and the interventions at three different stages (before emergence, 2-3-leaf stage and 4-5-leaf stage). The effect on buckwheat and the accompanying species was recorded by estimating the soil cover before and after each control method and grain yield was determined at harvest. The use of mechanical weed control methods at the 4-5-leaf-stage reduced the soil cover of weeds by 30 to > 70% compared to the untreated control. In general, the use of the hoe was more effective than the tine weeder. Based on the experiments, two control methods of either the tine weeder or the hoe did not improve the effect on the weed when compared to a single control method. In the case of tine weeding prior to emergence or the use of pre-emergence herbicides, caution is advised: depending on the weather, the harrow can damage the rapidly germinating buckwheat plants or shift the herbicide to the seeds and lead to phytotoxic damages. The agronomic properties and the grain yield were not significantly affected by any of the control methods, so either the use of the hoe or the tine weeder are possible means for successful buckwheat cultivation

Black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides) is one of the most important grass weeds in Bavaria. Chemical weed control with high efficacy is very important in crops like winter cereals, oilseed rape and maize. Crop rotations increasingly based on winter cereals, reduced soil cultivation and e.g. contract harvesting enhanced distribution of black-grass in all arable farming regions of Bavaria. Effects of herbicide resistance were observed since 20 years. The black-grass herbicide resistance is well surveyed by the official plant protection service of Bavaria leading to a broad experience in resistance testings and understanding of the resistance development of black-grass. First resistance cases in 2004 covered mostly resistance to ACCase-Inhibitors. Currently increased selection pressure can be observed for ALS-Inhibitors. In the course of our resistance testing program, multiple resistance and multiple target-site resistance occurred increasingly

Steam treatment (foil stream treatment) of soil to avoid the germination of weeds in open areas is a used application in JKI. The practical experience showed sometimes bad efficiency regarding weed control and high energy consumption. By accompanying the treatments with temperature measurements the thermodynamic physical processes should be identified in the real open area application to find practical ways to improve the biological and energy efficiency. Based on those results and literature, possibilities for improvement were postulated and realized in a further test. Additionally, thermophile seeds and horticultural important seeds were treated for different processing times and the germination capacity was controlled. The test showed the influence of additional thermal isolation and process control (time limit). In the current stage of optimization an energy consumption of 17.2 kWh/m2 for real open area applications with full weed avoidance was reached. An additional 24% decrease in energy consumption seems possible

A simple and fast light-microscopical method to identify rust species (Puccinia spp.) on wheat (Triticum aestivum) using germ pore features of urediniospores

In Central Europe there are three wheat rusts (Pucciniales) all of which are economically important. These are the (black) stem rust or wheat stem rust (Puccinia graminis), the leaf rust (P. triticina) and the stripe rust (P. striiformis). In order to monitore or control them effectively, efficient and reliable identification methods are needed. Here, a simple light-microscopical (phase contrast) method using germ pore features of urediniospores for identification is presented. This method makes it possible to identify the rust species exactly. In the present study this method is compared with the ITS sequence analyses with respect to identification accuracy, time and material costs

QTL identification and candidate gene identification for monoterpene content in grape (Vitis vinifera L.) berries

    Get PDF
Great progress has been made during the last decade in clarifying the molecular details of aroma accumulation in grape berries. However, the multigene complex controlling monoterpene accumulation in grape is not well understood. To shed light on this issue, the grapes of 149 F1 progenies from the cross 87-1 (Vitis vinifera L.) × 9-22 (Vitis vinifera L.) were characterized at the mature stage for three representative free monoterpenes during five growing seasons. A total of 202, 184 and 255 polymorphic SSR (simple sequence repeat) markers were contracted on the maternal 87-1, paternal 9-22 and consensus genetic maps, respectively. On the consensus map, we confirmed a major QTL (quantitative trait locus) for free linalool, nerol and α-terpineol content on linkage group (LG) 5, and a stable QTL for free linalool and α-terpineol was detected on LG 10. In addition, two new stable QTLs for free monoterpene (linalool, nerol and α-terpineol) contents were identified on LG 11 and LG 18 that explained up to 42.5 % of the total variance. Eleven promising candidate genes related to pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR)-containing proteins, seed maturation protein, RING finger protein, and AP2/ERF transcription factors might be potentially involved in monoterpene accumulation. The stable QTLs and candidate genes identified in this study provide new insights into free monoterpene accumulation in grape

Fast transmission of grapevine \u27Pinot gris\u27 virus (GPGV) in vineyard

Grapevine \u27Pinot gris\u27 virus (GPGV) is a newly emergent virus associated with the appearance of grapevine leaf mottling and deformation disease (GLMD). The worldwide spreading of this virus, and sometimes of the associated disease, that has occurred in the last years, requests further epidemiological studies to verify the progress of natural infection in the field. In the present paper, GPGV infection and spatiotemporal spreading of GLMD, investigated in two vineyards with high disease occurrence, confirmed an elevated presence of the virus in vineyards of Northeastern Italy, and revealed an increasing of symptomatic plants over the time. At the same time, the progress of natural infection was monitored after the placement of new grafted plants near the symptomatic grapevines in the infected vineyards. After three years, 76 % of the plantlets that were initially GPGV-free became GPGV-infected, giving an evidence of the fast transmission of GPGV in the field. Only 14 % of the plantlets, all collocated inside a patch with diseased plants, showed typical GLMD-symptoms. Interestingly, some plantlets, which were already GPGV-infected with the "asymptomatic" GPGV variant before planting in the field, did not become infected with the "symptomatic" viral wild variant after three years and never showed GLMD symptoms

How valuable is post-dispersal seed predation to control Echinochloa crus-galli in maize cropping in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania?

Silage maize is an important arable crop in Germany. Echinochloa crus-galli is one of the main weed species in this crop. Herbicide treatment, a common practice by conventional maize farmers to control this weed, may cause many negative impacts on non-target species and the wider environment. Post-dispersal seed predation is an important ecosystem service for weed control, but its value is rarely known. To raise social awareness, we aim to estimate the economic benefits of this ecosystem service. The extent of benefits that farmers can receive from the post-dispersal seed predation depends greatly on how farmers control weeds. By using an on-farm pesticide survey, the herbicide application patterns for Echinochloa crus-galli control in maize in the north-eastern Germany is analysed. Based on this, and by using economic surplus and field data from cage experiments, this case study estimated the value of post-dispersal seed predation of Echinochloa crus-galli in 2013 maize fields in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. This represents one of the first attempts of economic valuation of this ecosystem service

In 12 years, from autumn 1995 to harvest 2007, herbicide-free plots were installed in a long-term field trial on the Dahnsdorf field site of the Julius Kühn-Institute. Since autumn 2007, these plots have been again treated with herbicides. The Dahnsdorf field site is located in the federal state of Brandenburg, in the so-called nature region “Hoher Fläming”. The region is characterized by frequent early summer drought. In order to identify the differences between the previously untreated plots (1995 to 2007) and the plots always treated with herbicides, each year the species and the density of weeds are recorded before the herbicide treatments. Weed investigations are carried out either in autumn or spring. After more than a decade since the field trial was changed, differences in weed emergence between previously untreated and treated variants can still be seen. These differences still have a strong effect on the emergence of dicotyledonous weeds, whereas these differences no longer exist for the monocotyledonous weeds. The dominant monocotyledonous weed is Apera spica-venti
