Shusaku Endo and Setagaya (2) Topics Related to Showa Women’s University

    Get PDF
This paper introduces an essay and a lecture related to Shusaku Endo and Showa Women’s University (SWU) in Setagaya, and examines Endo’s views about literary criticism. The essay, “Watakushi no Nikki” (My Diary), was published in Shincho in February 1964. In it Endo confesses that he writes lies in his diary and mocks the approach of SWU students who collect tips about the authors’ private lives in order to interpret those authors’ works. Endo, at that time, advocated a theory called “Criticism of Metaphysics” which asserts that readers and critics must interpret literary works based only on the works themselves, not on facts or ideas about the authors’ lives. This was sharply opposed to the approach advocated by SWU’s Kindai Bungaku Kenkyu Sosho (The Serial Study of Modern Literature, 77 vols, The Institute of Modern Culture, SWU, 1956-2001). The lecture, “My Literature and Life,” was delivered to students of SWU on 22 October, 1982. No record is left of the lecture itself, but a printed description of a student’s impressions allows us to guess what he talked about. In this lecture Endo seems to have mentioned the unreliability of his own diary but also points out that in his work he pursues truth rather than facts. This seems to be a criticism of the above-mentioned ongoing study in which efforts were made to demonstrate causal relationships between authors’ lives and their works, but at the same time seems to be an encouragement to the students to pursue truth.departmental bulletin pape

Strategic Thinking and Action Used by Home-helpers in Housework Assistance Services

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to clarify the structures of strategic thinking and action used by home-helpers in housework assistance services. Group interviews were held with three groups of current and former home-helpers. The verbatim records were then analyzed using the modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA). Based on the results of the analysis, we created 24 concepts relating to home-helpers’ intentional actions and thinking as they provided housework assistance services, and classified these into 4 categories and 7 subcategories based on the associations between them. These findings reveal the nature of home-helpers’ strategic thinking and action in support of their provision of support activities while focusing on respecting the dignity of elderly people and providing self-reliance assistance.departmental bulletin pape

Recognition of Welfare Needs and Community Participation in Efforts to Maintain Local Communities ―Through a Study on Welfare Activities with the Participation of Residents in Hokuto City

    Get PDF
This study aims to clarify the recognition of welfare needs and the factors that promote community participation in efforts to maintain local communities by focusing on Hokuto City, a town in an increasingly depopulated mountain area. In an effort to counter depopulation, Hokuto is now actively accepting new residents. We have considered the welfare needs and activities of local residents, examples of community participation activities, and collaboration with local commercial entities. We conducted a literature review on the maintenance of local communities. We also conducted interviews with Hokuto City officials in administrative positions and analyzed publications and materials published by Hokuto City. In addition, we interviewed groups of residents to identify the local residents’ recognition of welfare needs and the status of welfare activities. In conclusion, it became clear that there is recognition of the welfare needs by local residents, including the need for welfare support for an aging population, the challenges of building relationships with new residents, and community welfare activities. Additionally, we have analyzed the status of active efforts based on such aspects as support from the local residents, and the creation of networks according to the needs of professionals, local residents, and commercial entities.departmental bulletin pape
