The Development of Bonsai as a Hobby in Early Showa Japan: Examining Descriptions of Natural Planting as a Hobby in the Book Shumi Taikan (1935)

    Get PDF
This paper explores descriptions of natural planting as a hobby in the book, Shumi Taikan published in 1935, focusing on bonsai. The study explains how the number of cultural pundits who enjoyed hobbies and built relationships with each other increased in early Showa Japan. Chapter 1 describes the community and context surrounding bonsai and explains its importance. Earlier studies on the history of bonsai are also examined. Chapter 2 summarizes hobbies related to natural planting that are described in Shumi Taikan. Chapter 3 classifies bonsai pundits by experience and describes their characteristics. Chapter 4 summarizes the construction of hobby organizations by area and name of organization and also appraises a large-scale exhibition held at Hibiya Park. This study verifies that an increasing number of publications by bonsai pundits and of botanical centers on natural planting as a hobby in early Showa Japan resulted in widespread recognition of bonsai. Bonsai was initially recognized as a new type of culture that was considered harmonious with sencha and suitable as ornaments for tokonoma. Thereafter, hobby groups were systematically formed and small- to large-scale exhibitions were held. Bonsai was favorably received by the public, leading to an increase in exhibitions. Bonsai developed into an art form from the time it came to be considered unique to Japan, rather than as part of Asian culture in general.departmental bulletin pape

The Effects of Shared Leadership in University Students’ Yosakoi Team Activities

    Get PDF
Using a longitudinal survey, we investigated the effects of shared leadership on group flow and group productivity on university students’ Yosakoi (group dance) team activities. Ninety male and female students participated in the survey, and three aspects of perceived shared leadership behavior were examined. Among these three aspects, the results of the survey suggest that supportive leader behavior promotes supportive shared leadership in the team. Supportive shared leadership promoted group identification, and that lead to achievement of the group’s tasks and increased contributions by team members to achieving the group’s goals.departmental bulletin pape

Directed Motivational Currents and Their Triggers in Formal English Learning Educational Settings in Japan

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to describe the nature of Directed Motivational Currents (DMC) experience among Japanese learners of English, and to identify long-term motivational barriers college students studying English compulsorily have. The most significant findings of this study reveal the proportion of respondents who reported experiencing DMC periods of motivation while learning English, the time of the experience and most common triggers. This study demonstrates that in Japanese educational settings, external factors and outcome-led goals play a dominant role to maintain English learning perseverance in students. One of the reasons may be that the Japanese college students are not always intimately connected to their self-concordant goals and to an individual core sense of self. Project-based learning is proposed as the means the teachers in Japan can use to help students overcome these barriers and facilitate a long-term motivation in English language learning in tertiary settings.departmental bulletin pape
