Changes in Awareness of the Meaning of Tokkatsu （Extra-curricular Activities） under the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Analysis of Interviews with Public Elementary School Teachers
Get PDFThis study was conducted to analyze the changes of awareness of elementary school teachers with regard to teaching Tokkatsu under the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from interviews with four teachers conducted in September, 2020, were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach （M-GTA）. The analysis lead to the creation of 43 concepts, 19 subcategories, and 7 categories. The interviews revealed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, elementary school teachers gave priority to subject instruction because they were requested to guarantee learning. Tokkatsu, which focuses on areas such as collectiveness, sociality, experience, independence, practicality, and autonomy was, consequently, deemphasized. But reviewing their experience teaching during the pandemic, teachers felt the need for Tokkatsu, and they are implementing a new teaching method suitable for the current situation.departmental bulletin pape
