The Classification of the Mongolian Languages: The Relationship between the National Language of Mongolia and the Written Language of Inner Mongolia

    Get PDF
This paper examines the classification of the Mongolian languages and dialects over time. The paper focuses on the relationship between the national language of Mongolia and the written language of Inner Mongolia. Before the establishment of modern written Mongolian, based on the contemporary concept of “nation”, in the 1910s and 1920s, Russia and Soviet scholars A. D. Rudnev and B. Ya. Vladimirtsov classified all the Mongolian languages as Mongolian dialects without considering the various countries Mongols inhabited. Subsequently, in the early 1950s, Soviet scholar G. D. Sanjeev, influenced by Socialist theories of nationhood, deemed Buryat an independent language due to its history and its relationship with written Mongolian. However, though he did not mention the relationship of modern written Mongolian used in the Mongolian People’s Republic (MPR) and Inner Mongolia, he emphasized that the languages are the same: “Mongolian”, and that since the 15th century their histories have been linked. He also pointed to the relevance of written Mongolian. At the first International Mongolian Studies Conference held in 1959, Mongolian scholar Sh. Luvsanvandan from the MPR, proposed his own model of classification, based on principles of geographical and historical continuity, also taking into the account the possibility of mutual understanding. It was based on classifications by G. D. Sanjeev and N. Poppe, who judged Buryat, Oirat, and Kalmyk to be independent languages. Finally, the author of this paper analyzes the epoch-making classification of Mongolian by scholar D. Tömörtogoo who emphasized the Mongolian written language’s influence on dialects in Mongolia, and classified the Mongolian language of Mongolia as “central Mongolian”, and the Mongolian language of Inner Mongolia as “southern Mongolian”. The scholar based this on the difference in their modern written languages. This paper argues that even if the writing systems of Mongolia and Inner Mongolia are different, the modern written language of Inner Mongolia was formed under the strong influence of the MPR’s written language. The author proposes that “Mongolian” should be classified based on the internal structure of the modern written language.departmental bulletin pape

Clara Schumann’s Editing of Musical Score and “Instruktiv Ausgabe” ―Issues concerning the “Clara Schumann- Ausgabe”―

    Get PDF
This study discusses the problems surrounding Clara Schumann’s editing of musical scores for piano by Robert Schumann. It examines “Robert Schumann’s Complete Works (Robert Schumanns Werke)” and “Instructive Edition (Instruktiv Ausgabe)”, both edited by Clara Schumann and the “Clara Schumann-Edition (Clara Schumann- Ausgabe)” in chronological order, and compares them with the reprinted “Instructive Edition”. In this paper, “Abegg Variations Op. 1” is the subject of analysis. The contents of Clara’s revision of this work, her interpretation for performance, and the extent of her intervention are considered. Summarizing the history and reception of the “Instructive Edition” makes it clear that Clara’s “Instructive Edition” was published with a different purpose from other instructive editions that ware popular in the 19th century. It is necessary to continue comparative research of the reprinted “educational editions” and also to reevaluate Clara’s editing of Robert’s scores in order to examine how pianists, understanding that Clara’s editing is based on her deep knowledge of her husband’s work, should evaluate and use this edition.departmental bulletin pape

Epidemiological Study on Smoking by Nurses

    Get PDF
Nurses are prone to excessive stress and disturbed daily life rhythms because most of them work shifts and are always required to pay attention to patients’ condition. The rate of smoking among nurses is high. In Japan, an aging society, healthcare and welfare burdens, particularly nursing and caregiving, will become increasingly significant. Hence, health promotion and maintenance among nurses, including the reduction of smoking, are important public health challenges. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey of nurses working in hospitals to clarify their smoking status and related factors. In 2015, all nurses working at three university hospitals were invited to participate in a self-administered questionnaire survey about lifestyle habits. Of 3,037 eligible nurses, 2,631 responses were considered valid: the valid response rate was 86.6%. 127 of them were men (mean age ± standard deviation: 29.3 ± 6.1 years) and 2,504 were women (31.1 ± 8.9 years). 38.1% of men and 12.3% of women were “current smokers”. A multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the following factors were significantly associated with current smoking: gender, age group, morning fatigue, and frequency of working night shifts. In order to reduce the smoking rate of nurses, it is hoped that measures including improvement of working conditions will be promoted.departmental bulletin pape
