Bodies Tested by the Mountain ::Perspectives on Advanced Old Age in Alpine Environments through the Lens of Gender
Aging beyond 80 years old while living in mountainous regions presents unique challenges, particularly for individuals’ relationships to the territory they live in. This article addresses the following question from a materialist feminist perspective: how do elderly individuals living alone in mountainous areas (re)negotiate their relationship to their bodies, from the perspective of gender hegemony? Drawing on interviews conducted with elderly individuals as part of a research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), we analyse the interplay between territory and aging bodies, both for men and women. By exploring various dimensions of the daily lives of “old” women and men, the article highlights a gendered differentiation in territorial engagement, revealing forms of subordinate masculinity and protest femininity. Furthermore, it demonstrates that advanced age in mountainous environments tends to blur gender norms, leading to a “virilisation” of women and a “feminisation” of elderly men living alone. Finally, it underscores the importance of considering the experiences of the very elderly in addressing the challenges posed by the demographic transformation of mountainous regions

Many studies involving practitioners who use patient education are based, without necessarily stating so explicitly, on a more or less participatory action research (AR) method. However, this is a rigorous iterative method that seeks to promote the expertise of practitioners, which requires strengthening collaboration with them. Here we present the AR method we used in a study on the implementation of a nursing role in general practice with a patient education function. Given the limited availability of practitioners, we had to improve the efficiency of our collaboration strategies by drawing on recommendations from the literature, which we illustrate through the AR we conducted. These recommendations aim to share AR activities and responsibilities with practitioners, ensure interprofessional coordination, manage the tensions inherent in any collaboration and maintain scientific distance to produce complementary knowledge
This qualitative study investigates the role of the learning portfolio in developing resilience competencies among nursing students. Through 6 semi-structured interviews with first-year health students, we explore how reflective writing within the portfolio aids in mobilizing individual and external protection factors, as well as defense mechanisms that foster resilience. Findings indicate that the portfolio facilitates significant introspection, helping students adapt and overcome challenges related to their training. It also promotes communication, flexibility, emotional management, and other key resilience skills. The study highlights the importance of support in using reflective writing to maximize its benefits and prevent its negative impacts. Lastly, it proposes a research perspective on vulnerability and resilience in other health professions, emphasizing the need for specific training and support programs to strengthen students’ resilience against professional challenges
Decarbonizing the aluminium industry ::a comprehensive review of pathways and process integration perspectives
Aluminium is recognized as an essential material for the global energy transition. However, its production is extremely energy-intensive and largely dependent on fossil fuels. The aluminium industry emits more than 1.11 Gt CO2-eq annually. Multiple obstacles persist in the face of decarbonizing such a heavy industry, including a shortage of alternative technologies for high-temperature furnace applications, unavailability of renewable electricity sources sufficient to supply continuous power loads, and inefficiencies of material recycling pathways. This review focuses on critically evaluating these challenges and defining methods to overcome them. A decarbonization framework is proposed for the aluminium industry through four interconnected layers: process integration, energy and exergy efficiency, techno-economics, and life cycle assessment (LCA). Twenty decarbonization metrics are computed across the four layers of this framework. The most relevant of which are process energy load, renewability index, carbon balance, total cost, and technology readiness level. Key mitigation strategies such as carbon capture, biomass use, and grid decarbonization, are found to collectively drive emission reductions in the aluminium sector. This review addresses key knowledge gaps in the literature and offers a structured framework to support strategic decision-making across the aluminium value chain
Development of a parametrized and regionalized life cycle inventory model for tire and road wear particles
Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWPs), composed of degraded tire rubber and road particles, are non-exhaust traffic emissions and a significant global source of microplastics. With concerns regarding environmental and health effects, accurate emission estimates are needed to better understand their occurrence and potential impacts. Existing methodologies for quantifying TRWP emissions and fail to account for key parameters related to vehicle operation, environmental, and driving conditions influencing emissions, while overlooking geographical variations. This research article introduces a novel, parametrized, and regionalized inventory model for quantifying TRWP emissions, providing context-specific estimates at vehicle and national scales. It aims to complement Life Cycle Inventory databases allowing a comprehensive Life Cycle Impact Assessment of TRWPs in future works. A vehicle-specific methodology, incorporating nine key parameters – road texture, carried load, driving behavior, speed, road wetness, paved or non-paved roads, temperature, humidity, and tire type (summer, friction, studded) – to estimate both large (10–500 µm) and fine (<10 µm) tire wear particle emissions. Results indicate that road texture, driving behavior and road wetness mainly influence large particle emissions while increasing temperature and carried load predominantly affect fine particle emissions. The driving environment significantly influences both emission types. Despite limited data accuracy and availability, the design of the model allows for continuous updates to refine its applicability across diverse contexts
Integrated LCA and eco-design process for hydrogen technologies ::case study of the solid oxide electrolyser
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a solid oxide electrolyser (SOE) has been performed using publicly available data. The system for producing 1 kg of hydrogen at 25bar and 99.9% purity is represented by a modular structure, which includes the 20-kW solid oxide stack manufacturing, balance of plant equipment, operation consumables, and end-of-life processes. A parametrized life cycle inventory modeling approach was developed. The results illustrate that SOE performs better than steam methane reforming only if supplied by electricity from renewable or nuclear sources. The operation consumables have been identified as the most contributive life stage (67%-89% of potential impacts), followed by equipment manufacturing (7%-22%) and stack manufacturing (4%-11%). Considering the predominant contribution of electricity supply in the consumables, no compromise should be made on ensuring clean electricity sourcing and on the stack energy conversion efficiency. The lifetime of the stack and the balance of plant equipment, as well as the heat mix have been identified as sensitive parameters to minimize the environmental impact of the hydrogen technology. These LCA results have been used to produce a tailored eco-design process for hydrogen projects: (i) organization of an eco-design workshop to present LCA results & environmental hotspots and related key parameters where to leverage eco-design innovations through an open discussion (brainstorm); (ii) provide an eco-design tool obtained from a simplified version of the LCA model parametrized around a limited number key life cycle inventory parameters, enabling the designers/developers to independently test the environmental performance of their innovations
