Shrinkage analysis of repacked soil samples enables quantifying the soil's potential physical quality
This paper investigates the physical properties of soil samples repacked from aggregate beds and the potential for retrieving representative soil pore properties at the field scale based on shrinkage analysis of a repacked composite sample. This approach was tested on 60 arable fields in Switzerland presenting a large range of soil organic carbon (SOC) and texture. Soil cores constituted from composite samples were repacked at the observed field bulk density. Their pore properties were compared to undisturbed soil samples from the same fields. The soil pore properties were characterized using shrinkage analysis and correlated to soil texture and SOC. The repacking protocol successfully recreated structured samples. The 40 µm, a larger porosity was measured for repacked samples compared to undisturbed ones, limiting the approach to assess the structure and dynamics of larger soil pores. Furthermore, soil clay content as well as SOC were strong predictors for the samples’ physical properties including pore space. The increase in structural porosity in the repacked sample was inversely proportional to the structural porosity already present in the undisturbed samples. Steeper regression slopes of the pore volume to SOC or clay relationship were observed for the repacked samples. These slope changes were comparable to those observed in soil structure restoration experiments and opposite to those observed in soil compaction trials. We conclude that repacking soil from a composite sample allows us to characterize the potential soil structure condition with respect to its SOC and clay content. The method can be used to assess soil structure quality in response to changes in soil management
Fragments from the Subterranean ::what connects and contrasts a bunker and a river in Geneva, Switzerland, to disjunctures in humanitarian politics?
Fragments of the Subterranean is an audiovisual piece that brings two subterranean protagonists, a bunker and a river together. No.1: Bunkers Bunkers have traditionally played an important role in ideologically and materially preserving and embodying the ‘neutral’ social and political identity of Switzerland. In addition to an extensive network of fortifications most evident in the estimated 8000 military bunkers spread throughout Switzerland, the rise of Cold War nuclear tension led to the construction of 370,000 nuclear shelters (abris de protection – abris PC – shelters) to secure every household in the country. While today some of these bunkers have been sold to private entrepreneurs for facilities such as hotels, museums, or mushroom farms, they have also been mobilized by the Swiss state to “host” asylum seekers. In 2005, the Housing Commission of Geneva’s ‘Grand Council’ investigated the ways in which asylum seekers were being housed in these nuclear bunkers. After interviewing social workers and asylum seekers – mainly from Kosovo – they concluded that past traumas (from torture, imprisonment, war and more) were exacerbated by the stress of living in these underground bunkers, especially for indefinite periods, as well as leading to a loss of day-night reality. Yet, in early 2024, two underground civil protection bunkers were reopened in order to house asylum seekers, despite having been closed six years earlier following a “Stop Bunkers” campaign. No.2: The Drize River The Drize River is an underground river that flows from France to Switzerland. In early 2024, construction work began to bring 450 meters of the Drize River to the surface: the first stage of a major river ‘renaturation’ project. Since the start of the project, articles have flooded the news with statements about how the river will bring fresh air, support biodiversity, and encourage interaction between local residents
When aesthetic uniqueness makes products less (vs. more) attractive to consumers
Common wisdom suggests that unique product designs appeal more to consumers. Recent research indicates that the effect might also be negative. We suggest that the impact of aesthetic uniqueness is negative, particularly when bought for usage. However, when purchased as investments, the effect of aesthetic uniqueness reverts to be positive
Exploring the dynamics of foreignness ::the identity work in subsidiaries
This study focuses on dynamics of foreignness. We conducted a multiple case study of seven subsidiaries of European MNEs operating in South Korea and examined their responses taking identity perspective to foreignness. We found that MNEs assign subsidiary managers with prior international experience. Subsidiary managers accentuate the attributes of the foreign identity and facilitate the positioning within the local context by leveraging the assets of multinationality. Our study reveals insights into the identity work in subsidiaries. Further our findings indicate that liabilities of foreignness might persist and that assets of foreignness might be temporary. Investigating how subsidiaries manage foreignness within a particular host country context, our study contributes to the literature on foreignness

Automatic registration of SHG and H&E images with feature-based initial alignment and intensity-based instance optimization ::contribution to the COMULIS challenge
The automatic registration of noninvasive second-harmonic generation microscopy to hematoxylin and eosin slides is a highly desired, yet still unsolved problem. The task is challenging because the second-harmonic images contain only partial information, in contrast to the stained H&E slides that provide more information about the tissue morphology. Moreover, both imaging methods have different intensity distributions. Therefore, the task can be formulated as a multi-modal registration problem with missing data. In this work, we propose a method based on automatic keypoint matching followed by deformable registration based on instance optimization. The method does not require any training and is evaluated using the dataset provided in the Learn2Reg challenge by the COMULIS organization. The method achieved relatively good generalizability resulting in 88% of success rate in the initial alignment and average target registration error equal to 2.48 on the external validation set. We openly release the source code and incorporate it in the DeeperHistReg image registration framework
Visual and material archives
This volume, with its detailed portraits of Caractères SA, Setag and Novatype, explores the history behind these typefaces and the historical context in which they were produced. It offers fascinating insights into the global impact type industry. When the three Swiss factories closed in the 1990s, most of their archives were destroyed. As a result, this research quickly turned into a very detailed investigation aiming to document this period of history by means of primary sources. This publication brings together the fruits of several years of research in numerous locations to reveal previously unpublished image material and cast a spotlight on a little-known chapter in industrial and typographic history, both locally and internationally
