A large synthetic dataset for machine learning applications in power transmission grids
With the ongoing energy transition, power grids are evolving fast. They operate more and more often close to their technical limit, under more and more volatile conditions. Fast, essentially real-time computational approaches to evaluate their operational safety, stability and reliability are therefore highly desirable. Machine Learning methods have been advocated to solve this challenge, however they are heavy consumers of training and testing data, while historical operational data for real-world power grids are hard if not impossible to access. This manuscript presents a large synthetic dataset of power injections in an electric transmission grid model of continental Europe, and describes the algorithm developed for its generation. The method allows one to generate arbitrarily large time series from the knowledge of the grid – the admittance of its lines as well as the location, type and capacity of its power generators – and aggregated power consumption data, such as the national load data given by ENTSO-E. The obtained datasets are statistically validated against real-world data
Keg wine, a sustainability-oriented service innovation fostering responsible consumption
As global consumers increasingly prioritize sustainability, industries are compelled to explore innovative solutions. This research paper investigates the potential of keg wine as a sustainable innovation addressing ecological, social, and economic goals. Despite alternative packaging options like bag-in box and cans, the wine industry largely relies on glass bottles, contributing to a significant carbon footprint. Leveraging the sustainability-oriented service innovation (SOSI) tool, this study analyzes keg wine as a solution for sustainable wine production, distribution, and consumption. Through a joint research including life cycle assessments, the environmental benefits of keg wine over glass bottles are demonstrated. Moreover, market studies reveal restaurateurs' and consumers' favorable attitudes towards keg wine, driven by economic savings and ecological consciousness. This research contributes methodologically, theoretically, and empirically to understanding and promoting sustainable innovations in the wine industry, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between researchers and industry professionals fora more sustainable future
Effects of a 1-year piano intervention on cognitive flexibility in older adults
We analyzed the data of a randomized controlled trial to examine the effects of piano practice on cognitive flexibility in healthy older adults. Participants (N = 153, 69.5 ± 3.5 years of age, 57.5% females) were randomly assigned to a piano practice group (PP) or a control group engaged in active music listening (MC). Both groups underwent a year-long intervention with weekly 60-min lessons and daily homework. We assessed switch and mixing costs in terms of speed (mean reaction times) and variability (standard deviation of reaction times) with a number switch and a perceptual switch task. We employed scale analysis based on musical instrument digital interface to assess pianistic performance. Tests were conducted at baseline, after 6 months, postintervention (12 months), and at follow-up (18 months). Results revealed more pronounced improvements in pianistic performance in the PP group compared with the MC group over the course of the intervention. Both groups exhibited gains in several cognitive flexibility outcomes, which originated primarily in the latter half of the intervention. For mixing costs of the number switch test, the PP group showed greater improvements compared with the MC group. Changes in pianistic performance were not related to changes in cognitive flexibility. Additionally, the findings indicated a compensation account in both groups, which was more pronounced in the PP group for mixing costs. This study suggests that both piano practice and active music listening—with piano practice to a higher degree—enhance cognitive flexibility, particularly in sustained control mechanisms linked to mixing costs. Both interventions potentially require longer than 6 months to induce behavioral transfer effects and are especially beneficial for individuals with lower cognitive flexibility levels. Impact Statement : This study suggests that piano practice and active analytical musical listening activities can enhance cognitive flexibility, a cognitive function that is particularly vulnerable in older age. This beneficial effect appears to be particularly pronounced in people with low levels of cognitive flexibility. However, these functions exhibit limited short-term sensitivity to such interventions, indicating that a longer duration (about 12 months as in our study) is necessary for the behavioral effects to manifest

Perceived financial hardship and sleep in an adult population-based cohort ::the mediating role of psychosocial and lifestyle-related factors
Background : Social inequalities in sleep have been reported, but there is less research on the mechanisms underlying this association. This study investigates the relationship between financial hardship and sleep within the general adult population, focusing on the mediating effects of psychosocial and lifestyle-related factors. Methods : We used data from the Specchio cohort, a population-based study in Geneva, Switzerland, initiated in December 2020. Perceived financial hardship and sleep outcomes (insomnia, sleep quality, and sleep duration) were assessed by questionnaire in 2020 to 2021. Counterfactual mediation analysis was conducted to examine the extent to which perceived financial hardship impacts sleep through psychosocial (psychological distress and loneliness) and lifestyle-related (weight, smoking, and physical inactivity) pathways. Models were adjusted for age, sex, education, living alone, and chronic disease. Results : Among 4388 participants, those experiencing financial hardship had a greater risk of insomnia (odds ratio: 2.11; 95% confidence interval: 1.70-2.61), poor sleep quality (odds ratio: 1.69; 95%confidence interval: 1.41-2.02), and not meeting sleep duration guidelines (odds ratio: 1.40; 95% confidence interval: 1.18-1.66) compared to those without financial difficulties. Psychosocial factors explained 40% of the relationship of financial hardship with insomnia, 35% of the relationship with poor sleep quality, and 10% of the association with suboptimal sleep duration. The contribution of lifestyle-related factors was 8%, 12%, and 17%, respectively. Conclusion : Perceived financial hardship is a significant predictor of poor sleep, and this association is mediated by psychosocial and, to a lesser extent, lifestyle-related factors. These findings highlight the need for integrative approaches addressing social inequalities in sleep
Towards the development of legislative framework for solar neighborhoods
The growing implementation of sustainable urban infrastructure, utilizing solar energy for heat and power generation, daylighting, and thermal comfort, has intensified the focus on sustainability standards and guidelines. Nevertheless, a noticeable deficiency persists in regulations that specifically address solar energy access and protection, posing a barrier to the diffusion of solar-centric neighborhoods. This paper examines the traditional urban regulatory frameworks and the state of solar energy regulations and practices within five countries (i.e., Canada, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland). The aim of the study is to (i) identify gaps in existing regulations, standards, and codes, (ii) highlight the need for future regulations to protect solar access and rights, and (iii) support the deployment of solar technologies on a large scale. The results underline that climate-related regulations often fall short of specificity tailored to regional and local climates, relying on generalized climate considerations. Solar energy legislation is generally scarce and lacks comprehensive planning. Finally, despite various financial incentives for the installation of active solar strategies, their impact remains limited, impeding the wide spread of solar technology as a primary source of energy production in urban environment
