Gamified simulation for onboarding healthcare teams in emergency care ::development and preliminary feasibility
Background:
Staff turnover remains a significant challenge for hospital departments, especially in environments as demanding as emergency departments (EDs). High staff turnover (up to 22% annually) imposes significant strains on existing teams, delaying operational readiness and jeopardizing care quality.
Objective:
To address these challenges, we developed a gamified simulation designed to immerse future employees in a virtual reconstruction of the hospital’s facilities.
Methods:
This solution, deployed as an online platform, empowers new staff to efficiently familiarize themselves with key operational aspects such as premises, equipment, and personnel through engaging interactive quests. Additionally, a complementary web application allows medical teams to adapt the simulation to reflect evolving departmental needs (e.g., new quests, rewards, avatars, quizzes, and equipment) without IT intervention.
Results:
Initial user tests yielded positive feedback, suggesting the potential to reduce on-boarding time by 30 to 40%. For a department with 100 staff members and a turnover rate of 22\%.
Conclusions:
This could save approximately 2,500 staff-hours annually, equivalent to reallocating nearly 1.3 full-time positions to patient care. This paper thoroughly examines the conceptual design, initial outcomes, and strategic considerations for scaling this solution, substantiated by detailed figures and technical analyses
Evaluation of control and modulation methods for modular multilevel converters
The modular multilevel converter is a promising converter technology for various high-voltage high-power applications. Despite the apparent simplicity of the circuit, the inherent dynamics of the converter and the balancing of the sub-module capacitor voltages impose high requirements on the control system, which can be implemented in quite different ways. To illustrate this, and to provide a guidance for future research on the subject, this paper presents an evaluation of four different control and modulation methods. The investigation is based on experiments on a down-scaled 10 kVA converter having 10 submodules per phase leg. The main items to be investigated are dynamics within the sub-modules, arm voltages and circulating currents. It is found that the suggested open-loop control method provides the fastest arm-voltage response and that the balancing approach based on a sorting algorithm is substantially faster and less complicated to implement than the method using a dedicated voltage controller for each sub-module
UPS ::Under Pressure Solutions
In a rapidly changing world, industrial design faces new challenges. For Milano Design Week 2024, ECAL presents UPS – Under Pressure Solutions, an experimental research project aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the furniture industry through the use of shape memory materials.
The exhibition shows the process and results of this exploration led by five industrial designers teaching at ECAL, as well as objects designed by students from the Master's in Product Design programme, revealing the innovative and creative potential of cellulose sponge

Scènes de nuit est un projet de recherche qui explore le rôle de la nuit dans la construction des villes et des sociétés contemporaines, en illustrant comment la théorie et la critique architecturales sont encore aujourd’hui associées à la lumière du soleil et aux paradigmes diurnes. Le projet porte sur les technologies, les réseaux et les formes de design déployés dans les espaces architecturaux nocturnes et les communautés qui leur sont associées. Il s’adresse à un public à la fois local et mondial, grâce à un vaste réseau de praticiens et de théoriciens du design architectural et nocturne. La recherche se développe à travers des événements, des temporalités, des conditions et des formats différents, en se concentrant sur les espaces architecturaux nocturnes, notamment à travers une scénographie habitée, des expositions performatives, des conférences internationales, des débats et des projections. Le projet propose qu’il n’y ait pas de différence entre format et contenu, entre la production de connaissances nocturnes et leur exécution
Assembling Intelligence ::Hybrid Strategies for AI, Art, and Design
Visitors of the exhibition can explore how HEAD – Genève’s initiatives in AI are shaping the future of digital creation and artistic expression. Through the dialogue between the artworks of Weiyu Chen, Léonie Courbat, Jeremias Fries, Alexandra Galian, Margot Herbelin, Elie Hofer, Quentin Piel Langlet, Chloé Richard, Alpha Syn, and Elsa Wagnieres, and the research projects of Sylvie Boisseau, Sabrina Calvo, Kévin Donnot, Élise Gay, Guillaume Helleu, Sonia Laugier, Nicolas Nova, Anthony Masure, Alexia Mathieu, Chloé Michel, Etienne Mineur, Douglas Edric Stanley, Frank Westermeyer and David Zerbib, the exhibition seeks to inspire and provoke thought about the intersection of AI, art, and design. It showcases how these fields can collaborate to push the boundaries of creativity. This is the first time these projects and artworks are showcased in the US
Unpacking Tschichold's Library
The exhibition features the corpus of bibliographical sources cited by the graphic designer Jan Tschichold in his work Die neue Typographie (The new typography, 1928). This founding text of modernist graphic design has been at the centre of debates, while the sources cited by its author have often been overlooked.
All the books have been identified and collected in original, reprint or facsimile, including the production of new facsimile editions.
The books on display allow to explore their impact and their relationship with the principles set out in The new typography.
Thus, Bauhaus books, works by Le Corbusier, Futurist manifestos, German standards on printed matter find their place in this exhibition, which is the result of a research project carried out at ECAL between 2019 and 2022

Acceptability of home-based HPV self-sampling for cervical cancer screening among users and providers in the West region of Cameroon ::a cross-sectional study
Background : The World Health Organization’s 90-70-90 goal aims to eliminate cervical cancer (CC) as a public health issue, with a target of up to 70% of women screened by 2030. However, many countries, including Cameroon, are far from achieving this goal. Home-based human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling is a promising approach to improve participation rates. The main objective of this study was to explore the acceptability and feasibility of home-based HPV self-sampling in the West region of Cameroon. Methods : A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted between January 11 and February 05, 2024, was embedded in a cluster-randomised controlled trial comparing home- vs. hospital-based CC screening. Women eligible for CC screening, male partners or close relatives, community leaders, and healthcare professionals (HCPs) living in Dschang health district responded to a structured questionnaire. Simple and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the association between acceptability of home-based HPV self-sampling, CC screening practices, and sociodemographic factors such as education, professional status, residence, and income. Preferences for implementation (e.g., seasonal timing) were also explored. Results : A total of 556 participants (300 women, 70 male partners, 153 HCPs, and 33 community leaders) were recruited. Overall, 77.5% of participants expressed favourable attitudes toward home-based HPV self-sampling, with acceptability rates of 73.7% for women, 65.7% for men, 90% for community leaders, and 87.6% for HCPs. Previous CC screening was reported by 33% of women, and was significantly associated with being over 40 years old (aOR = 2.1, p = 0.007), with a monthly income of > 50,000 XAF (aOR = 2.2, p = 0.049), and having good knowledge of CC (aOR = 2.6, p = 0.001). Morning screening implementation was preferred by most participants, with 60% favouring year-round screening. More than 70% preferred face-to-face communication of HPV test results from SMS or phone calls, at hospitals for women (63%), men (50%), and HCPs (65.4%); while community leaders preferred home disclosure. Conclusion : Home-based HPV self-sampling was highly accepted across all study groups and was unaffected by sociodemographic factors. Previous screening practices were associated with age, income, and knowledge. Home-based HPV self-sampling screening can address access disparities to CC screening. Community involvement in planning and implementing these programs is essential to ensure their success
