Fast and accurate laser powder bed fusion metamodels predicting melt pool dimensions, effective laser absorptivity and lack of fusion defects

    No full text
The significant computational expenses associated with simulating the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) process often restrict the insights gained from modeling endeavors to specific combinations of process parameters, hindering broader conclusions. In this study, we employ a classical Design of Experiments approach on results obtained by multiphase Finite Element simulations. Utilizing this framework, we derive quadratic metamodels for the dimensions of the melt pool, enabling predictions of melt pool width, depth, and length across a wide spectrum of processing conditions. Notably, our findings indicate that as few as 25 simulations can suffice to predict melt pool dimensions in conduction mode LPBF across varying laser power, velocity, initial temperature, and spot size parameters. Among other insights, the metamodels uncover and quantify the substantial influence of initial temperature (the local temperature of the volume preceding the laser interaction). Additionally, rare insights regarding the melt pool sensitivity towards the laser spot size are provided. Furthermore, our investigation delves into laser interactions with different phases (powder, liquid, solid) across diverse processing conditions to establish a net global absorption coefficient. These analyses underscore that, under conventional process conditions, most of the incident laser intensity falls onto the liquid phase during conduction mode LPBF simulations of 316L stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V. However, the laser spot size significantly affects the laser intensity interacting with the liquid phase, warranting consideration of laser spot size dependent absorptivity values in part-scale models. Lastly, employing straightforward geometric simulations, we derive a full processing map predicting the occurrence of Lack of Fusion defects, based on calculated melt pool dimensions and the associated scanning strategy

    Disentangling moral hazard in banking

    No full text
The paper extends the Diamond and Dybvig (1983) bank run model by adding a risky long-term investment opportunity. Thus, banks are needed in the economy for their liquidity transformation role, yet have an option to gamble. Deposit insurance creates incentives for banks to do so. We show that capital regulation alone cannot solve the moral hazard problem that arises because of deposit insurance. We find that a combination of policies is required to resolve the problem

Characterization of fluid in facial sinuses on post-mortem CT in case of death by drowning

Recent statistics show that drowning deaths are a reality in Switzerland. Although drowning remains a diagnosis by exclusion for forensic pathologists, post-mortem multidetector computed tomography (PMCT) is a real complementary resource to establish the cause of death. The aim of this study was to determine whether the sinuses’ fluids visualized in post-mortem MDCT in case of drowning have specific characteristics that can be related to the submersion process and provide an additional element to the diagnosis of death by drowning. A few studies exist on the subject, but none of them compared putrefied bodies and drowned cases. A balanced dataset was retrospectively collected of 108 cases of natural death, putrefied bodies and drowned cases at the University Center of Legal Medicine in Geneva. For each paranasal cavity, the fluid and sinus were segmented in the slice with largest liquid quantity to derive liquid-to-sinus surface ratio (LR), and mean density (MD) in Hounsfield units (HU) of the fluid when present. For all sinuses, the MD was significantly different between putrefied and drowned groups. The average LR was statistically different for frontal and maxillary sinuses. Using cut-off values as Youden indices from ROC curves, promising specificities (Sp) and sensibilities (Se) were obtained, using single (e.g., frontal sinus: LR cut-off = 0.15: Sp = 76%, Se = 68%; MD cut-off = 44,55HU: Sp = 93%, Se = 64%, or maxillary sinus: LR cut-off = 0.14: Sp = 56%, Se = 86%; MD cut-off = 34,91HU, Sp = 65%, Se = 85%) or all (logistic regression: Sp = 80%, Se = 92.6%) measurements. This study identified potential leads for discrimination of drowning cases from natural deaths and putrefied bodies

While the general public discovered Large Language Models (LLMs) with ChatGPT—a generative autoregressive model, they are far from the only models in the LLM family. Various architectures and training regiments optimized for specific usages were designed throughout their development, which were then classified as different LLM families

How do hotels adapt their pricing strategies to inflation?

    No full text
The impact of inflation rates over the past three decades on hotel pricing and revenue has been overlooked in the literature. This study addresses this gap by examining how hotels adapt their pricing strategies in response to inflation, considering their diverse business models and customer segments. The findings reveal that hotels adeptly increased RevPAR during inflation, adjusting rates without compromising occupancy or revenue. Variations in ADR and RevPAR responses suggest greater flexibility in pricing, particularly among hotels serving more affluent customer bases. However, in high inflation periods, even with the implementation of flexible pricing strategies, some hotels experienced a slowdown in revenue growth under high inflation, challenging industry resilience perceptions. However, certain hotels effectively employed strategic pricing, achieving accelerated revenue growth that surpassed the impact of high inflation. In summary, the study provides valuable insights into how hotels navigate pricing strategies amid inflationary economic conditions

Cluster-specific urban contexts associated with high levels of sleep impairment and daytime sleepiness ::findings from the Urbasan collaborative study

    No full text
Introduction : Impaired sleep is a global health concern. However, the environmental factors contributing to sleep impairment in urban settings are still not well understood. Methodology : This study involved 179 participants from a Swiss municipality (Yverdon-les-Bains), where sleep quality and diurnal sleepiness were measured using validated questionnaires, alongside environmental and geo-referenced data. Results : The findings revealed a high prevalence of sleep disorders across diverse demographic groups (respectively 15.6 % for diurnal sleepiness and 91.1 % for significantly altered sleep quality). Additionally, sleep disorders were associated with both environmental and socio-demographic factors. Geospatial analysis identified clusters of sleep disturbances in specific neighborhoods, with distinct associations to specific sub-scores (factors) of the sleep evaluation. Conclusion : Assessing sleep in urban environments is crucial, as it is linked to elevated levels of sleepiness. Environmental and socio-demographic variables play significant roles in these disturbances. The incorporation of geospatial analyses allows for a more precise identification of patterns within the city, offering opportunities for tailored interventions to address the different patterns of sleep disorders

Aesthetic Protest Cultures: After the Avant-Garde offers a new way of analyzing and theorizing the question of the avantgarde today. It is customary within art history and cultural history to argue that the avant-garde disappeared as an (anti)artistic gesture during the 1960s. The dissolution of the Situationist International in 1972 is often presented as the endpoint in the history of the avant-garde. The implosion of the ''68 revolt - quickly in France, after a long process of revolt and counter-revolt in countries like Italy - effectively ended the attempt to use art as a vehicle for a transformation of capitalist society. This book contributes to the discussion of the avant-garde today by discussing whether it is still relevant for contemporary anti-systemic critique and analyzing different instances where the avantgarde has creeped into protests and social experiments outside art and art institutions. Includes essays from Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen, Esther Leslie, Abigail Susik, Natasha Gasparian, Marina Vishmidt, Yves Citton, and Gene Ray

Unpacking occupational participation in the context of romantic partnerships ::a scoping review

    No full text
Background: Romantic partnerships are characterized by deeply emotional and physical bonds often manifested through shared occupations. The concept of co-occupation highlights the interdependent and collaborative nature of such occupations. However, the question remains as to how co-occupation can be understood within the context of a romantic partnership. The objective of this scoping review was to identify and summarize how co-occupation involving romantic partners has been described within occupational science and occupational therapy literature. Methods: A five-step scoping review framework identified relevant primary research from three databases: CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Pubmed. Studies had to include romantic partners, aged 18 years and older, and describe the occupational participation of both partners. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify and synthesize themes emerging from the findings and discussion sections across the studies. Results: The search yielded 229 studies from databases and 3 from citation searching. Twenty met the inclusion criteria. Most studies involved heterosexual partners living in Western countries. The identified themes were: 1) ‘Doing together’: joint participation in co-occupations; 2) ‘Doing for each other’: singular participation in co-occupations; and 3) ‘Doing as one’: Navigating illness as reflected in co-occupations. Conclusions: While the findings are limited to heterosexual relationships and English language literature, this review highlights how partners can experience shared meaning, intentionality, and physicality through their co- occupations. Further research is needed to explore how a sense of ‘we-ness’ can emerge from such occupational participation.
