This paper investigated the status of the electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) programme development and management at the University of Khartoum (UofK) in Sudan. Explored aspects such as deposit policy, workflow, the theses and dissertations retrospective digitization project progress, metadata and software platform used, dissemination and access mode employed, and copyright issues. The study adopted a qualitative approach involving the case study method. A semi-structured interview was used for the purpose of data collection. Relevant documents and reports pertaining to the ETD programme development at the University were obtained and analyzed, in addition to observation, and investigation of the ETD collection at the University’s institutional repository. The paper revealed the various strengths and weaknesses of the ETD programme at the University such as the availability of the collection via the institutional repository of the University as either abstract or full text, and the lack of coordination among the stakeholders of the programme. Highlighted some of the opportunities and threats of the programme and finally came up with some conclusions and recommendations that will enhance the production and management of ETDs at the University of Khartoum

Using metadata record graphs to understand controlled vocabulary and keyword usage for subject representation in the UNT theses and dissertations collection

    Get PDF
An important function of metadata for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) is supporting the discovery of related documents through linking of data values in the fields of metadata records. While benefits of the ETD format allow for full-text searching, metadata is still an important and necessary component of the global ETD infrastructure because it is often not possible to share the full documents in aggregations such as the Global ETD Search for the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. The metadata field that has the most potential to assist users in discovery is the subject field used to represent what a resource is about. Over the years there has been much discussion of the value of author-generated keywords versus adding subject terms from controlled vocabularies by information professionals as documents are submitted to the University repository. This research seeks to explore this problem with the help of network analysis method not used for such analyzes before by building and analyzing metadata record graphs for the University of North Texas theses and dissertations. This paper reports on the characteristics of keyword-based and controlled-vocabulary-based metadata record networks and discussions insights that can be gained from this approach to metadata quality analysis. The status of the Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETDs) outputs amongst the institutional repositories in South African universities: Part 1 .

Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETD) have been around for more than a decade now and were initiated as a means of collecting, sharing, disseminating, and archiving research outputs from academic institutions. Even before ETDs, institutions of higher learning have been collecting and archiving this type of scholarly outputs manually. While most thesis remain unpublished, this knowledge produced is almost constant as it is (in most universities) a requirement when research students graduate. In sub-Saharan Africa, it has been established that there is low research output when compared to the rest of the world. Yet, there are many universities in Africa who produce post-graduate students who submit ETDs and these are not visible or most never turn into research papers. As in the rest of this world, African universities have established institutional repositories in academic libraries to help preserve the institution’s intellectual property and to increase the institution’s visibility (global rankings) and prestige. It is uncommon to have either a dedicated ETD collection in an institutional repository or a stand-alone ETD repository. This purpose of this study was to establish the research output and visibility of scholarly research produced by the higher education institutions in South Africa and specifically focus on the ETDs. This study has both qualitative and employs pre-dominantly the desk-study and intensive literature review. The study discovered that all 23 South African universities have ETD collections and three have dedicated ETD repositories. The rate of deposit does not match the graduation levels and the visibility of these ETD require an institutional priority. The paper concludes by proposing an in-depth survey to understand the emerging issues from this present study. This is the first part of the 2 part study, the second part interviews the ETD managers or repository managers to closely verify the issues raised or discovered in the first part

PhD training on Open Science in French universities

    Get PDF
The development of open science requires a cultural change in academic institutions, including the acquisition of new knowledge and skills in fields like open access publishing, research data sharing and citizen science. The paper presents results from a survey on PhD training programs related to open science in ten highly ranked and research-intensive French universities. Based on the discussion of the empirical survey results (content, format, discipline, etc.), the paper establishes a list of some recommendations that may be helpful for the assessment of existing programs and for the development and implementation of new programs

The ETD lens on the IR and the University

    Get PDF
Electronic Theses and Dissertation (ETDs) form the foundation of many institutional repositories (IR), and ETDs can provide an important lens on how the IR represents the work that is being done university-wide. To test this theory, I studied a microcosm of VTechWorks, the IR at Virginia Tech, anticipating that it would encapsulate the characteristics of the repository as a whole. I analyzed the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) microcosm through the ETD lens.I compiled a controlled vocabulary of 161 LGBTQ terms and phrases that I searched in the IR’s ETD collection, recording number of hits for each term. To give context to this data and to understand more broadly who is doing the scholarship and research in this microcosm, I gathered the same data from the IR’s faculty publications and academic units’ web publications which are often aimed at alumni or the public. I searched the same vocabulary in the university website to establish the measure of the LGBTQ domain and to contextualize the data from the IR.Using a microcosm to look at graduate student works in the IR and university web publications provides manageable data and the opportunity to reflect on the contribution of ETDs to the development of institutional repositories

A Multi-Faceted Multi-Stakeholder Approach for Increased Visibility of ETDs in Zambia

    Get PDF
The University of Zambia has had a functional Institutional Repository (IR) since 2012. However, while Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) are routinely deposited into the IR, the ingestion is not timely, with significantly large time gaps existing between ETD submission dates and ETD IR ingestion dates. We propose a multi-faceted approach that is aimed at providing a potentially viable solution to the problems through the use of effective workflows and automatic classification of IR objects. Preliminary results demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach is feasible. It is anticipated that the proposed approach will facilitate the implementation of a National ETD portal for storing up-to-date and consistent metadata records from Higher Education Institutions across Zambia

Mapping of ETDs in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) Global database (2014-2018)

    Get PDF
The information explosion in the form of ETDs poses the challenge of management and extraction of appropriate knowledge for decision making by information practitioners. This study presents a solution to the problem by applying topic mining and prediction modeling to 441 full-text ETDs extracted from the PQDT Global database during 2014-2018 in the field of library science using the RapidMiner platform. This study was divided into three phases. In the first phase, metadata analysis of the ETDs retrieved from the database was performed to identify the association of various entities such as universities, departments, types of degrees, and geographical areas with the ETDs. In the second phase, 8 core topics namelychildren literature; academic library; information retrieval; archival science; user study; digital library; library leadership; and digital communication were determined using latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) and each ETD was then annotated with the modeled topic. Lastly, a prediction model using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) was created to classify the untagged ETDs going to be submitted in the database under the 8 modeled topics ( a to h )
