    Digital Archive on Agricultural Theses and Journals (DAATJ) of Bangladesh: An overview

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current status, potential benefits and challenges of digital archiving of agricultural theses and journals in Bangladesh with a focus on the lesson learnt from a World Bank financed project titled as ‘Digital Archive on Agricultural Theses and Journals of Bangladesh’. That project worked on the three Bangladeshi Agricultural Universities for five years with an aim to convert all the printed Master of Science (MS) and Doctoral theses to digital format. Following a qualitative methodology, this study was conducted through an intensive review of project documents as well as consultation with educators and students. Results of the study reveals the prospect and challenges of establishing ETD repositories for agricultural universities in Bangladesh. The analysis indicate the value of project experiences for introducing a model of ETD repositories. With a policy implication, the findings reveals that academicians, researchers, librarians, students, policy makers, extension providers and farmers would get immense benefit from such archive. Observing the success, it is recommended to adopt similar model for other agricultural universities in Bangladesh.     Summarizing ETDs with deep learning

    Inspired by the millions of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) openly available online, we describe a novel use of ETDs as data for text summarization. We use a large corpus of ETDs to evaluate techniques for generating abstractive summaries with deep learning. Using an extensive ETD collection of over 30,000 doctoral dissertations and master’s theses, we examine the quality of state-of-the-art deep learning summarization technologies when applied to an ETD corpus. Deep learning requires a large set of training data to produce satisfactory results. Finding suitable training data is especially difficult due to the widespread use of domain-specific jargon in ETDs, coupled with the wide-ranging breadth of subject matter contained in an ETD corpus. To overcome this significant limitation, we demonstrate the potential of transfer learning on automatic summarization of ETD chapters. We apply several combinations of deep learning models and training data to the ETD chapter summarization task and compare the outputs of the top performers

    Analisa-se a obra de Sanches, Antunes e Lopes (2019) que, começando por abordar os conceitos subjacentes ao referencial teórico relativo ao desenvolvimento da escrita em contexto académico, nos convida a reflectir sobre o impacto que a regularidade desta prática pode ter no sucesso académico dos estudantes do ensino superior.Apresenta-se, ainda, a noção de que as competências associadas ao planeamento, orientação, divulgação e análise da informação científica assentam em saber ler de forma cuidada, em pensar correctamente, em argumentar de modo lógico e em escrever claramente, o que, na obra em análise, os autores consideram constituir condição basilar para a transferência do conhecimento.Conclui-se procedendo à abordagem da implicação e desafio que essas condições formativas constituem para a capacidade de comunicar ciência através de uma nova estrutura arquitectónica e morfológica que, se bem que tradicionalmente já existente, desafia agora os autores, mas também os docentes e os bibliotecários, acrescentado que foi o novo e disruptivo paradigma de publicação em modelos associados à Ciência Aberta

    Using persistent identifiers to track PhD outcomes

    The British Library and STFC are working together to connect metadata relating to PhD theses to use of research facilities provided by STFC. Through the creation of a graph which connects metadata across EThOS, the UK national e-theses repository, the STFC insitutional repository ePubs and the Diamond Light Source repository, links between the theses, authors and institutions have been made. This pilot work has the potential to be extended to enhance the metadata stored within EThOS which is administered by The British Library. This work presents an exciting possibility for other institutions as this graph will present a method to enable the bi-directional updating of metadata held across different systems
