EVALUATION OF A HANDS-ON COOKING CLASS AND ITS EFFECTS ON SELF-EFFICACY IN RELATION TO HEALTHY EATING IN TYPE 2 DIABETICS
The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is alarming and poses a great threat to U.S. national health. Chronic diabetes can lead to serious conditions such as heart attack and stroke, and can result in premature mortality (World Health Organization, 2018). Diabetes can be prevented or treated by eating a healthy diet. Cooking classes are a potential way to improve American’s knowledge of nutritional principles and help them become confident that they have the capacity to eat a healthy diet. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if participation in cooking classes enhanced self-efficacy as it pertains to healthy nutritional intake patterns in adults with type 2 diabetes. Self-efficacy was measured using a questionnaire and the Social Cognitive Theory was used as a theoretical framework. Data was analyzed with a Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test which compared participants’ responses on pre-class self-efficacy to post-class self-efficacy. After comparing differences in self-efficacy, a significant increase was observed for the following categories: ability to consume recommended daily fruit intake, knowledge of recommended daily vegetable intake, knowledge of the three major CHO groups, knowledge of how simple and complex CHOs affect blood glucose levels, knowledge of good fiber source, and knowledge of who creates websites ending in .com. However, a significant increase in self-efficacy was not observed for using app/websites to make healthy food choices. These findings show that CCB has the capacity to improve participants’ self-efficacy, which will allow them to engage in healthy cooking and eating habits, and potentially yield positive health benefits
Factors Influencing Attitudes Towards Ex-Offenders
Every day, incarcerated individuals are being released back into the general population having served their time. However, these released ex-offenders are 83% likely to re-offend if they are not able to reintegrate properly (Alper et al., 2018). The present research explored how various factors of ex-offenders and community observers could have an influence on attitudes towards ex-offenders upon reintegration. Specifically, we looked at the influence of three manipulated characteristics of a hypothetical ex-offender, race, gender, and age, which were presented to the participant in the form of a vignette. After reading one randomly assigned vignette, the participants were asked to rate their attitudes on three dependent measures (attitudes towards ex-offenders, explicit racial bias, and explicit gender bias). There were significant results showing a more positive attitude towards the Black male who didn’t take responsibility. All other results were not statistically significant. Despite the results, this research provided further evidence and future directions for understanding what factors influence positive attitudes towards ex-offenders to help them reintegrate successfully

Plasma and fecal cortisol metabolite concentrations following an ACTH challenge in captive brown bears (Ursus arctos).
Fecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) are increasingly used to index physiological stress in wildlife. Cortisol and other glucocorticoids (GCs) act to mobilize glucose, providing immediate energy to respond to environmental perturbations. Cortisol, the predominant GC in most mammals, is metabolized by the liver and excreted as FCMs in feces. However, for FCMs to serve as a meaningful physiological index, we must understand the link between circulating stress hormone levels in the blood that impact host physiology and expression of measurable fecal hormone metabolites. Thus, my goal is to quantify the link between blood cortisol and FCM concentration. To achieve my goal, I collaborated with scientists at Washington State University Bear Research Center to validate the use of FCMs as a potential noninvasive metric to index stress in brown bears (Ursus arctos). As such, nine unanesthetized captive brown bears were injected with synthetic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) at 5μg/kg intravenously and 10mL of blood was drawn at 0h, 3h, 6h, 24, 48, and 72h post-injection to measure changes in blood cortisol concentrations. Fecal samples were collected continuously from 24h pre-ACTH challenge through 72h post-ACTH challenge. While blood cortisol values peaked around 6-hours post-injection, peak concentration of FCMs occurred around 24 hours post-injection, suggesting lag time between secretion of cortisol following a stressful event and expression of FCM is ~24 hours in brown bears. My work will provide a quantitative link between blood cortisol and expression of FCMs in brown bears, which is critical for indexing physiological stress in captive and free-ranging brown bears
EXPLORING THE CORRELATION OF THE PRESENCE OF THE ST3GAL3 GENE IN INDIVIDUALS DIAGNOSED WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER USING LOOP MEDIATED ISOTHERMAL AMPLIFICATION WITH COLORIMETRIC DETECTION
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children. Children who have been diagnosed with ADHD will likely have trouble paying attention, controlling compulsive behaviors, and staying within appropriate activity levels. Diagnosis of ADHD can be somewhat subjective. An article published by Michigan State University’s Todd Elder in 2010 claims that at that time nearly one million American children may have been misdiagnosed with ADHD (Elder, 2010). Review of the literature shows that ADHD can be considered a disorder with significant genetic components. More recent literature points towards the ST3GAL3 gene as a significant source for this genetic correlation. If ST3GAL3 gene plays a significant role in genetically linked ADHD, then we should be able to detect a normal ST3GAL3 gene only in a control group of individuals.. In order to test this hypothesis, Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) was used for rapid amplification of the wild type ST3GAL3 gene target. DNA samples were collected from 80 participants, 40 with a self-reported positive ADHD diagnosis, 40 with no self-reported ADHD diagnosis. This research shows that there is a significant correlation between the mutation of the ST3GAL3 gene and a positive ADHD diagnosis

PELVIS ENERGY FLOW AND GROUND REACTION FORCE PREDICTORS OF ELBOW TORQUE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGIATE BASEBALL PITCHERS
High joint forces and torques are associated with injury risk in baseball pitching. Energy flow (EF) analyses have provided valuable information on how segment and joint powers influence the pitching motion but have not been used to investigate EF influence on elbow torque. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of pelvis EF and ground reaction force (GRF) with elbow valgus torque in a sample of high school and collegiate baseball pitchers using regularized regression and statistical parametric mapping. A set of 14 GRF and EF variables were found to be predictors of maximum elbow valgus torque. Both groups differed in pitch velocity and elbow torque but exhibited similar patterns of energy generation and transfer at the stride hip and L5S1 joints. These findings could translate to lower body strategies to reduce the injury risk of high school and collegiate pitchers
TRUNK MOTION DURING A HALF-MARATHON: THE IMPACT OF PERCEIVED FATIGUE ON MOTION STABILITY AND SMOOTHNESS
Our objective was to investigate the effects of acute fatigue on stability and smoothness of trunk motion during a half marathon. 13 recreational runners were fitted with a GNSS-IMU sensor on their chest. Every 10 minutes of the race, the participant pronounced their perceived fatigue, recorded by a smartphone attached to the arm. We divided the race into 8 equal segments, corresponding to one fatigue score per segment, and considered only level running. Based on mediolateral acceleration and running velocity (v), stability was characterized by spectral entropy, RMS of acceleration (RMSA), and autocorrelation between successive steps and strides; smoothness by jerk cost (JC), spectral arc length (SPARC), and inverse number of peaks (IPV) of v. Both RMSA and JC increased significantly shortly after race onset. RMSA increased significantly at a lower perceived fatigue level, while JC increased at a higher level. Whereas other measures did not change substantially, RMSA and JC showed a clear change with acute fatigue and also differentiated well between the five fastest and five slowest runners. With increasing perceived fatigue, both parameters showed a higher change for ‘slow’ group. This study highlights the loss of stability and smoothness in running due to acute fatigue and the importance of simultaneously measuring perceived fatigue and trunk biomechanics under real-world conditions
ANALYSIS OF RUGBY PUNT KICK MOTIONS AIMING AT DIFFERENT KICKING DISTANCES
The purpose of this study was to compare the rugby punt kick motions for different kicking distances of college players, focusing on the motions of the kick leg and hip. A motion capture system (11 cameras, 200Hz) was used to collect three dimensional coordinates data of nine college rugby players, who performed three different punt kicks aiming at 35m, 50m and maximum kicking distances. Pelvis rotation range of motion and approach angle increased significantly with the increase in kicking distance. EFFECTS OF FATIGUE ON RUGBY PLACE KICKING TECHNIQUE AND PERFORMANCE
The aim of this study was to identify differences in place kicking performance and technique following a rugby-specific fatigue protocol. Three skilled place kickers performed four blocks of the protocol, between which they took three place kicks from a challenging pitch location. The success of the kicks, measures of physical exertion and lower body and torso kinematic variables were measured. Kicking success dropped following blocks 2 and 4 of the protocol, all missed kicks were wide of the goalposts. Individual differences were apparent. After block 2 the kickers demonstrated greater upper body motion, potentially a strategy to obtain fast foot velocity but at a detriment to accuracy. After block 4, collapse of the stance leg was observed which may have impacted the kickers’ stability. Further research with more participants and a specific focus on muscular fatigue is required
