    Sagittal plane trunk movement is important for producing propulsive force when sit-skiing. We aimed to validate the use of inertial measurement units for measuring sagittal plane trunk movements during sit-skiing in the field. Able-bodied participants (n=4) performed 30 seconds of sit-skiing in a kneeling position on a treadmill while one AdMos IMU sensor (on the upper back) and 4 reflective markers on the trunk recorded kinematics.     KINEMATIC ANALYSIS OF POP DANCE CHOREOGRAPHIES THROUGH MODULAR MOTOR SYNERGY

    Pop dance, or popping, is a subgenre of hip hop dance popularized during the last decades, while its biomechanics is not well understood yet. This study aimed to understand pop dance motions through modular motor synergy analysis. Pop dance performance by three experienced dancers, measured with a markerless human pose estimation method, was analyzed with principal component analysis (PCA) to extract motor synergies. The synergies obtained indicated the movement complexity and specific motor coordination patterns of ten typical pop dance choreographies, with emphasis on elbow, shoulder, hip and knee contributions. The results will enhance our understanding of complex dance movements, making a step toward future applications to medicine or art

    GRAVEL BIKE VIBRATIONS

    TThe purpose of this pilot study was to explore the vibration exposure of Gravel bikes at different tire pressures. Therefore, 9 cyclists (73.7 ± 10.2 kg, 1.78 ± 0.06 m) rode a 150 m flat gravel section at a constant speed of 25 km/h with three tire pressure conditions (1.5, 2.5, 3.5 bar). Horizontal and vertical accelerations at the front dropout (FDO) and rear dropout (RDO) were recorded. Reducing the tire pressure from 3.5 to 1.5 bar resulted in a significant decrease in the resulting acceleration at the FDO from 3.41 ± 0.18 g to 2.07 ± 0.07 g and at the RDO from 2.78 ± 0.14 g to 1.56 ± 0.07 g. When comparing the ratio of horizontal and vertical rms of acceleration, ratios of up to 0.9 for the FDO and up to 0.47 for the RDO were found. This indicates that horizontal accelerations, especially at the FDO contribute considerably to the overall vibration exposure of the bike. The two main conclusions are that (I) damping systems in gravel bikes should take into account not only vertical but also horizontal accelerations and (II) tire pressure adjustment has a similar potential for vibration management on gravel as more complex damping systems

    SKILLED RIDERS MANAGE HORSE GAIT COMPLEXITY THROUGH A GAIT TRANSITION WHILST ALSO MAINTAINING STABLE HORSE-RIDER COORDINATION VARIABILITY

    Equestrian riders aim to cue smooth transitions between horse gaits. This study aimed to investigate whether competitive horse rider (n=10) decrease horse gait regularity and increase horse-rider coordination variability in the region of a gait transition (n=6; both walk-trot, and trot-canter) relative to baseline walk, trot and canter. Resultant accelerations from IMUs affixed to the horse’s girth and rider’s pelvis were calculated. Horse gait regularity was quantified as multiscale sample entropy (MSSE) of the pelvis. Horse-rider coordination variability (Coordvar) was quantified as the standard deviation of the horse-rider continuous relative phase. Pre-transition MSSE did not increase; post-transition MSSE significantly decreased (paired t-tests; pvar were found. Therefore, horse gait or horse-rider Coordvar does not increase in a transition

    ATTENTION BIAS TO CLIMATE CHANGE IMAGES FOLLOWING EMOTIONAL INDUCEMENTS OF PRIDE AND GUILT

    Climate change is the most important issue facing modern day humans, and the solutions are not developing at a quick enough rate. In many cases, human-derived climate effects have crossed the threshold to becoming irreversible, and, as we remain inactive, are continuing to worsen as mitigating steps are not taken. Some of the most devastating effects facing humans include rising sea levels that threaten to flood coastal regions, and heatwaves of heightened intensity which threaten access to potable water and loss of food crops. Humans are not the only victims of climate change. Ecosystems are also greatly threatened by climate change as native species have continued to go extinct as a direct result of factors like overexploitation, pollution, land development, and the introduction of non-native species. Climate change policies and technological solutions, with particular regard to emotional/affective qualities, would be better communicated with a stronger understanding of attention. There is much debate regarding how attention is allocated. The present study aimed to alter attention bias towards climate-relevant images using emotional inducements of either pride or guilt, and assess change in attention bias with an eye-tracking device. It was found that participants induced to experience pride engaged in attentive avoidance of the climate change images, and negative images of climate change elicited greater attention bias than positive images of climate change. There was no interaction between the inducement condition and image valence

    The submitted article, “From Mississippi to the Northwoods: A Search for Opportunity”, describes the genealogical exploration into the details around one family’s move to northern Wisconsin in the early 1900s. This family research revealed previously unknown details and prompted additional investigation into the historical factors that may have prompted the family’s journey from Mississippi to northern Wisconsin. This article describes the African American history of the Steele family and addresses some of the issues faced by formerly enslaved people and white residents advocated for Black rights in the South that forced them to leave in search of safety and economic survival. Specific personal details may enlighten those for whom this history is vague and distance. This article provides evidence that residents with known African American/Black ancestry lived in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the early 20th century and offers evidence of racial passing by residents of the Northwoods
