    VISIBILITY AND USAGE OF ISBS PROCEEDINGS AT FORTY YEARS

    This study described the visibility and usage of research published in ISBS conference proceedings articles from 1983 to 2022. The 6,688 articles were downloaded 1,955,728 times in total, and 78% were indexed by Google Scholar. In recent proceedings, the number of articles and total downloads have decreased but downloads per article per year of availability have increased steeply. Top (1%) cited articles in Google Scholar had citations and citation rates similar to articles in biomechanics journals. While visibility has grown, there is limited citation of most ISBS proceedings articles compared to journal articles

    RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VERTICAL STIFFNESS AND REACTIVE STRENGTH INDEX MODIFIED IN COLLEGE-AGED MALES DURING JUMPING

    The present study analyzed ground reaction forces that occur during a counter-movement vertical jump (CMVJ) to examine how measures assessing stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) interact. The participants consisted of thirteen recreationally active males that volunteered for this study. Vertical ground reaction forces were measured using a force platform sampling at 1000 Hz and exported into an RStudio vertical jump program for further analysis. A simple linear regression was performed to investigate the relationship between vertical stiffness and modified reactive strength index (RSImod). Modified reactive strength index was a significant predictor of vertical stiffness (p = .010, Adj. R2= .421). These results suggest that further examination of the mathematical equation used for RSImod is needed to eliminate possible effects of confounding variables as relationship differences were observed with the vertical stiffness measure that has been used for adequate assessment of the lower extremity muscle-tendon units’ status during counter-movement vertical jumping and other movements utilizing the SSC

    PILOT: PITCHING STRIDE CHARACTERISTICS ACROSS AN APPERANCE DURING A DIVISION-I COLLEGIATE BASEBALL GAME

    Stride phase characteristics have been identified as contributors to pitch velocity. The aim of this study was to determine how in-game pitching stride phase characteristics and pitch velocity changed across a pitching appearance. Five (5) male Division-I pitchers were measured across an appearance during a collegiate baseball game. Five (5) biomechanical characteristics during the stride phase and pitch velocity were assessed. Biomechanical and pitch metrics were collected for each pitch and averaged per inning. Center of Mass Anterior/Posterior Velocity at Foot Contact was observed to significantly increase across time, though pitch velocity did not change across time. This may suggest that pitch velocity could be a trailing indicator of mechanical change. If true, biomechanical data should be leveraged to better identify when pitching biomechanical patterns may be changing during an outing

    EFFICIENCY INDEX USED TO ASSESS SHOULDER STRESS IN COLLEGE SOFTBALL PITCHERS THROUGHOUT A SIMULATED GAME

    Shoulder distraction forces in softball pitching are known to have a positive impact on performance yet a negative impact on musculoskeletal health. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in shoulder stress across innings pitched using Efficiency Arm-Stress Index (EASI) scores. Motion capture was used on collegiate softball pitchers pitching a simulated game. Peak shoulder distraction force was obtained using inverse dynamics procedures and used to calculate an EASI score (fastball velocity divided by peak shoulder distraction force in percent body weight). A RM·ANOVA revealed inning had no effect on EASI score (F[6,7]=1.28, p=0.286). Understanding a pitcher’s efficiency score may help shape individual pitching loads. Future work should investigate clinically meaningful changes in efficiency scores and mechanisms behind low efficiencies

    CAN SHORT BOUTS OF TECHNIQUE TRAINING IMPROVE SPRINT TECHNIQUE AND PERFORMANCE IN YOUTH SOCCER PLAYERS?

    This study aimed to investigate whether a technique-oriented intervention would result in improvements in sprint running technique and sprint performance in youth soccer players. Fourteen youth soccer players with pelvis and trunk control issues were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group did three weekly 15 minute running technique-oriented training sessions over seven weeks while their counterparts continued with their usual training programme. Sprint performance and technique were assessed before and after the intervention with a Laveg device and two video cameras, respectively, during a 40-m maximal sprint test. The players of the intervention group showed improved control of the trunk and pelvis (p≤0.01) while no change was observed in the control group. Both groups showed a trend for improvement in sprint performance

    PEAK RATE OF TRUNK ENERGY OUTFLOW DIFFERS BETWEEN PITCH TYPES IN SOFTBALL PITCHERS

    In softball players, it is unclear how certain pitch types may increase the risk of injury. The purpose of this study was to determine energy flow differences in the trunk and upper-arm segments between pitch types. Twenty-three softball pitchers participated. Absolute values of trunk energy inflow (IF) and outflow (OF), and upper arm IF, as well as segment energy flow when normalized to pitch speed were assessed in three pitch types. Differences between trunk energy OF were found between fastballs compared to curveballs and dropballs. When normalized to pitch speed, trunk energy OF only differed between fastballs and dropballs. For the upper arm, absolute differences were found between the fastball and curveball. Similar rates of humerus IF between the fastball and dropball and less trunk outflow in the dropball may indicate increased upper extremity demands in the dropball

    ASSOCIATION BETWEEN AGE AND BODY’S KINEMATIC RESPONSES TO UNPREDICTABLE GAIT PERTURBATION

    This study assessed the body’s kinematic responses to unpredictable gait perturbations repeatedly induced by a fall-inducing technology platform in young and older adults. Ten young adults (young group) and ten older adults (older group) completed two trials with the gait perturbation (i.e., trip). Maximum trunk flexion angle, maximum right hip flexion angle, and minimum whole-body center of mass (COM) position quantified the body’s kinematic responses for a pre-trip period and a recovery period. The results showed that both groups significantly increased maximum trunk flexion angle and maximum right hip flexion angle during the recovery period compared to the pre-trip period. The young group showed a significantly decreased minimum COM position during the recovery period compared to the pre-trip period. Our findings can inform perturbation-based gait training in young and older adults to improve the body’s responses for fall reduction and prevention

    Effect of COVID-Protocols on Athletic Training Burnout

    Burnout is a psychological condition consisting of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a decreased sense of personal accomplishment and identity. Since the start of the pandemic, a significant increase in burnout has been reported by healthcare professionals, however, there is little known regarding the experiences of athletic trainers (ATs). PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to investigate the association between burnout and COVID-19 related factors among ATs. METHODS: An electronic survey grouped by the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Human Services Survey, COVID-19 related workplace policies, and demographics was sent to 1,000 ATs through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association email listserv; participants were also recruited via a social media link. Pearson correlations or Kendall’s tau non-parametric correlations were used to measure the strength of the association between burnout and COVID-19 job-related items. One-way ANOVA was used to determine any differences between burnout scores across demographic factors. RESULTS: 81 ATs (age: 34.72 ± 11.27 y; career experience: 11.7 ± 10.6 y) across the US completed the survey (6% response rate). Emotional exhaustion depersonalization (EEDP) burnout was identified among 33.3% of the respondents. Correlations were found between EEDP burnout and poor financial compensation for increased responsibilities (n= 81; r=.212, p=.042), work hour alterations (n=78; r=.217, p=.037) and workload changes (n=78; r=.158, p=.128). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the COVID-19 pandemic changed the AT profession in novel ways. Moving forward, researchers should aim for a better understanding on the long-term effects of COVID-19 and effective strategies in alleviating burnout in the larger population of ATs

These poems and essays recover and discover history that can be channeled through writing and research and collecting experiences with these plants and landscapes that have witnessed our joy and suffering and magic and erasure
