    INFLUENCE OF THE DAME 8 BASKETBALL SHOES ON JUMP KINETICS AFTER 150 MILES OF SIMULATED RUNNING

    Basketball involves high-mileage running and repeated jumps. The goal of this study was to compare pre- and post-kinetic variables involved in jumping between basketball shoes with different inflicted mileage. Eleven NCAA Division I basketball athletes (20.5±1.4 years, 195.1±5.7 cm, 86.7±10.9 kg) performed a countermovement jump (CMJ), a rebound countermovement jump (CMJ-R), and a Multi-Rebound (MR) for four rounds on force platforms. Each round, athletes switched between brand-new (New) and worn (Worn) Dame 8 basketball shoes. Kinetic variables associated with each jump task were compared across shoe type. Several kinetic variables differed significantly between shoe type; however, the magnitude of difference was small-to-moderate.     The purposes of this study were to examine the differences in the peak impulses and ground reaction forces (GRF) of the lead and back legs as well as how energy flows (energy absorption, generation, and transfer) in the back hip, front hip, and L5S1 joints during the baseball swing phases between high school and collegiate baseball players. The findings indicate that the mechanical energy flows down the chain from the L5S1 joint to the pelvis into the lead leg during the bat acceleration phase of the swing in both participant groups. It is hoped that these findings may help coaches and athletes understand which kinetic components of the swing improve bat speed. Thus, coaches may develop training strategies to improve bat speed and player performance

    THE INFLUENCE OF GRIP POSITIONING ON MUSCLE ACTIVATION PATTERNS IN TENNIS FOREHAND: A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION

    This study compared muscle activation patterns during the forehand stroke among thirteen nonprofessional tennis players across three grip positions [Eastern(4), Semi Western(6), Western(3)]. Surface electromyography was used to assess fourteen trunk and dominant upper arm muscles, while hitting forehand crosscourt shots using their preferred grip. Individuals using Semi Western grip demonstrated higher activation of proximal musculature responsible for horizontal flexion/internal rotation at the shoulder (Pectoralis), whereas those using Eastern grip had higher activation in distal musculature (FCU, ECR), acting primarily to control flexion/extension. These differences suggest the Eastern grip requires less axial rotation of the arm but more contribution of wrist flexor/extensors than Semi Western/Western grips, which may relate to grip-specific repetitive strain injuries

    FECAL CORTISOL METABOLITES: A NON-INVASIVE METHOD FOR MONITORING THE LONG-TERM HEALTH OF FREE RANGING BROWN BEARS

    Ecotourism is a rapidly growing industry worldwide and has been used as a tool that can promote conservation. While ecotourism can serve as a mechanism to help conserve natural areas, increases in visitors present challenges for managers tasked with balancing conservation goals while ensuring positive visitor experiences. As such, managers and ecologists are increasingly using fecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) to index stress associated with ecotourism. In this study, I sought to (1) quantify the relationship between blood cortisol levels and FCM concentrations in brown bears (Ursus arctos), and (2) evaluate whether ecotourism elicits a measurable stress response in a free-ranging brown bears. For my first objective, I conducted an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenge on nine captive brown bears at the Washington State University Bear Research, Education, and Conservation Center to quantify the relationship between blood cortisol and FCM concentrations. For my second objective, I collected fecal samples from three designated bear viewing sites (Chinitna Bay, Shelter Creek, Silver Salmon Creek) across Lake Clark National Park and Preserve with variable ecotourism. I found that peak FCM concentrations occurred between 10h-27h following ACTH challenge. Additionally, I found no significant difference in average FCM among sites; however, bears at Chinitna Bay exhibited high variable in FCM concentrations, which may be a result of unpredictable human-interaction due to conflicting rules across land jurisdictions. This study highlights the importance of consistent bear viewing practices across bear viewing areas, providing bears with predictable human-bear interactions

The text engages with themes of sisterhood, trauma, and ideology through the lens of transfeminism as they relate to history, family, and the state. Brick is the search for chosen family and a place of belonging as it narrates the life of and creates dialogue between its principal subject, Dora Richter, the first documented trans woman to receive a vaginoplasty. Brick celebrates trans life and embodiment in all of its delicate precarity under capitalist patriarchy, serving as warning of how easily progress can be lost while proclaiming the joy of rebellion from the cruel, effemimanic imagination it documents

    Appropriated Voices: William Blake’s “The Little Black Boy” and British Antislavery Poetry

    British antislavery poetry in the late 1700s is well characterized by the first stanza of William Blake’s poem “The Little Black Boy” when his black speaker says “o! my soul is white; … But I am black as if bereav’d of light” (2-4). These statements that seem to exclude each other exemplify the discussions and arguments that antislavery poets had been publishing and would continue to deliberate after “The Little Black Boy” was printed in 1789. Other poets, while appropriating the voices of enslaved people or Africans, as Blake does in “The Little Black Boy,” often emphasize differences between their black speakers and their white British audiences even though they seek to create sympathetic portrayals of those speakers and promote abolition. Blake circumvents this phenomenon through his rejection of racialized hierarchies that draw attention to differences and through complicating ideas of hierarchies in general with the result being that a white English child who the little black boy mentions is not hierarchically privileged over him. Through directly comparing “The Little Black Boy” with three other antislavery poems I will explain how Blake is able to create a poem that rejects racial hierarchies more effectively and enthusiastically than many of his contemporaries

    Seasonal habitat and movement ecology of adult brook trout in a northern Michigan headwater stream

    Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) exhibit a wide variety of movement and habitat use strategies. Habitat needs change seasonally and ontogenetically, but the degree to which brook trout move among suitable habitats depends on life history strategy and stability in environmental conditions. This study examined the seasonality of stream-resident adult brook trout habitat use and movement patterns, and the influence of brook trout size and condition on mobility at multiple spatiotemporal scales. Brook trout in a small northern Michigan stream were collected via electrofishing and implanted with uniquely identified passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags. Mobile PIT antenna surveys were conducted at fine scales of four 35m focal reaches during four survey seasons, and at coarse scales of 31 100 m reaches during two survey seasons. All surveys were conducted during fall and spring transition periods between winter and summer conditions. Results showed little evidence of seasonal differences in either habitat use or movement. Movement and space use were positively related with total length (TL) at fine scales, and among mobile individuals at the coarse scale. Fish in poor condition (Kn) moved longer distances at the finest spatiotemporal scale. Although seasonal movement patterns were consistent at the population level, mobile individuals showed little consistency in their movement behavior
