SPORTS EQUIPMENT: HOW THE TRANSFORMATION FROM PASSIVE TO DIGITAL SYSTEMS OPENS NEW DOORS AND PUTS NEW DEMANDS ON SPORTS BIOMECHANISTS
The digital transformation of almost every aspect of our lives is probably the most radical change observed in human history. As part of this revolution, almost every piece of sport equipment can be instrumented with sensor technology now or in the future. The massive amount of data that can be generated by these systems can be utilized to help athletes to optimize their movement technique and load management and also offers great opportunities to perform research studies on a much larger scale, with a much better temporal resolution. Nonetheless, the widespread rise of digital feedback and measurement systems needs careful consideration of comparability, reliability and validity issues and puts new demands on the skills of sports biomechanists. During my talk I would like to highlight these challenges in a systematic way using examples coming from my own scientific work. This includes examples from instrumented starting blocks and reaction detection systems, sensor equipped running shoe insoles that monitor load and performance variables of their users and finally load monitoring systems used in team sports. I will discuss issues arising from the use of different sensor technologies and technical constructions, issues of comparing the results of novel systems with the existing body of knowledge in our field and challenges arising in data reduction and reporting. From this, I will briefly derive requirements for the education of sports biomechanists to allow for keeping up with and making ideal use of the opportunities involved in the transformation of sports equipment into digital systems

CHARACTERIZATION OF THERANOSTIC PEPTIDES FOR GLIOBLASTOMA MULTIFORME
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a type of primary CNS tumor in which viable treatment options do not exist. Standard of care including tumor resection, chemotherapy, and radiation does little to extend the 5-year survival expectancy past 5.1%. Herein, two small-peptide molecules with inherent antitumor activity, blood-brain barrier permeability, and capability for tumor-specific drug deliverance and intraoperative visualization (termed theranostic) were of focus. Confocal microscopy was employed to characterize in vitro specificity of chlorotoxin, a 4 kDa scorpion venom peptide, and rBSG, the recombinant 25 kDa non-glycosylated extracellular domain of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN; Basigin) isoform 2, toward U87 GBM and MSU 1.1 human foreskin fibroblast cell line labelling. A novel cDNA construct coding a recombinant chlorotoxin (rCTX) variant for periplasmic prokaryotic expression and histidine-tag purification was created. However, prokaryotic expression and purification of histidine-tagged rCTX was not obtainable. Confocal data also supports variable labelling activity of commercially sourced CTX and rBSG in vitro for both U87 and MSU1.1 cell lines. These data support further investigation of small-peptide theranostics for GBM treatment

STUDENT ATHLETES’ PERCEPTION OF SMARTPHONE USE AND ITS EFFECTS ON SLEEP QUALITY, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION

This study investigated the perception of smartphone use and its perceived effects on sleep quality, depression, and anxiety among NCAA collegiate student athletes (SA). One hundred and ninety one Northern Michigan University SA’s completed an online questionnaire consisting of original content and select components from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale (MPPUS). Pearson product moment correlations examined relationships between demographic information and perception questions. Correlations examined relationships between perception questions and the corresponding health based questionnaire (i.e. “Do you believe your smartphone use has increased or decreased your feelings of anxiety” and the GAD-7). Results indicated that there was a moderate correlation (r=0.513) between the perception of smartphone use increasing depression and the perception of smartphone use increasing anxiety. In conclusion, excessive smartphone use, specifically pre-bedtime smartphone use is a stressor that negatively affects sleep. While this technological device continues to evolve and become increasingly present in all aspects of human life, the chances of negative consequences also continue to increase. Athletes must gain a deeper understanding of healthy sleep and how it can be optimized for maximal performance
Valuing Student and Teacher Voices: Using Literacy Quadrants to Disrupt Notions of Stigma in Young Adult Literature Focused on Mental Illness.
DOES PEAK GROUND REACTION FORCE AT INITIAL CONTACT OF WALKING CHANGE DEPENDING ON THE PHASE OF RESPIRATION?
This study explored if there was a difference in peak ground reaction force (GRF) of walking depending on the phase of respiration (inspiration or expiration) at initial contact. Twenty-five individuals were tested and grouped as inhalers or exhalers. Data was collected for peak GRF using an Advanced Mechanical Technology force platform and phase of respiration using a CapnoTrainer® capnography unit at initial contact for 5 walking trials at a controlled velocity. An Independent Samples t-Test was used to examine the data with an alpha level p\u3c.05. The results suggested that there was no difference in peak GRF for those that inspired/expired at initial contact. Future research will explore the effects of breathing on walking/running at different speeds/inclinations where breathing retraining has been proposed in treating some overuse injuries
