    Narrating the New Nation: South African Indian Writing

    The purpose of the book is to engage with South African Indian writings through a critical examination of the oeuvre of key writers within a postcolonial theoretical framework. With the advent of democracy, South Africans witnessed new writings which either reflected on apartheid with elements of restoration for past atrocities and centered around reflective nostalgia, or looked ahead with optimism and foregrounded new beginnings. The end of the interregnum in 1994 drove people to narrate the relationship between past, present, and future which revealed an exciting diversity and rituals of bourgeois lives or reflected upon disadvantaged and marginalized homes in townships, casbahs and ghettos. These innovative narratives attempt to conquer and spatialize different histories, while at the same time find creative ways to assemble shattered fragments of memory. A critical question this study asks is whether South African literature continues to address themes of journey, exile, migration and identity within the major concern of place and displacement in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa Indian writing, or whether the new writings foreground critical self-awareness as citizens of a democratic and neo-colonial nation-state. The volume of critical essays hopes to endorse social and cultural—race, class, gender, sexuality— analysis, problematize them, expand them, and in the end enrich African literature. In so doing, we attempt to encourage a critical, creative and empowering space for a plurality of voices, minds and stories and hope to reveal how literature involves itself in the unfinished business of the collective in South African history and literature

    USING CLINICAL SUPERVISION TO IMPROVE INTERPROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION By Melissa Copenhaver Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is important to the future of the healthcare system in that IPC is part of the solution for promoting better healthcare outcomes (Gilbert, Yan, & Hoffman, 2010; Reeves, Perrier, Goldman, Freeth, & Zwarenstein, 2013). Marshall (2011) notes that “interprofessional collaborative practice promotes team identity, conserves energy by a unity in direction, and invites harmony of efforts” (p. 158). The skills needed to engage in IPC are cultivated through interprofessional education (IPE) (Reeves et al., 2013). Currently, at Northern Michigan University (NMU), there are limited opportunities included in the program curriculums of nursing students and social work students to promote the skills needed to engage in interprofessional education (IPE). The curriculums are designed as academic silos, which does not reflect the expectations for graduates entering the workforce. This project provided opportunities for nursing and social work students to use clinical supervision groups to explore their clinical experiences and expand their skills related to IPC. The students who participated in clinical supervision showed larger increases in the Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale (ISVS) post scores than students not in clinical supervision groups and qualitative results suggested students felt their IPC skills increased. Findings from this project could inform future efforts to implement IPE strategies at NMU and other universities

    VARIABILITY IN VERTICAL JUMP HEIGHT AND LOWER LIMB KINEMATICS BETWEEN DAYS

    The purpose of this study was to determine the variability of lower limb range of motion (ROM) during vertical jumps using inertial-based systems. Ten participants attended three laboratorial session to familiarise with the countermovement jump (session 1) and to perform three maximum countermovement jumps (session 2 and 3). Motion from the lower limbs and pelvis were tracked using an inertial-based system and sagittal plane ROM computed for the hip, knee and ankle joints. ROM was compared between sessions using t-test, typical error and effect sizes. Moderate effect sizes were observed with differences in angular data varying from12° for similar heights of the jump (p = 0.27 and d = 0.21). Moderate differences in sagittal plane ROM for the lower limbs were observed for vertical countermovement jumps which limits the use of joint ROM between sessions from inertial-based system

    PREDICTING NET JOINT MOMENTS DURING A HANG-POWER CLEAN FROM GROUND REACTION FORCES WITH A NEURAL NETWORK

    The purpose of this study was to develop a deployable neural network (NN) to predict hip, knee, and ankle Net Joint Moments (NJM) from Ground Reaction Force (GRF) data during the hang-power clean. Thirteen male lacrosse players performed the hang-power clean exercise at 70% of their one-repetition maximum while GRF and 3-D motion data were acquired. An inverse dynamics procedure was used to calculate hip, knee, and ankle NJM. Center-of-mass velocity, position, and power were calculated from the GRF data and used as inputs to a NN that predicted hip, knee, and ankle NJM. Predicted NJM from the trained NN exhibited acceptable root mean squared errors, but produced large percentage differences between predicted and calculated peak NJM when tested on new data, which likely resulted from overfitting during open loop training or insufficient closed loop training

    RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN GRIP STRENGTH TESTS IN MALE STRENGTH SPORT ATHLETES

    The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between a number of common grip strength tests in strength sport athletes. Thirty-four male athletes competing in weightlifting, powerlifting or strongman were assessed for their maximum performance in the handgrip dynamometer, pinch grip and revolving thick bar grip strength tests. Correlations between the three strength test were: handgrip and pinch grip (r = 0.40), handgrip and revolving thick bar (r = 0.66) and pinch grip and revolving thick bar (r = -0.03). These varying relationships between the three strength tests suggest a relative specificity of strength test assessment, which may also be interpreted to suggest that strength and conditioning coaches need to select the appropriate grip exercises to improve sports specific grip performance in their athletes

    TAI CHI INCREASED BODY STABILITY AMONG THE ELDERLY UNDER THE DUAL TASK CONDITION DURING STAIR ASCENT

    Our work aimed to find out whether Tai Chi (TC) exercise could improve body stability among the elderly under a physical-cognitive dual task (DT) condition during stair ascent. 15 elderly persons who regularly exercised TC and 15 no exercise (NE) participants were asked to walk ascending stairs under single task (ST) and DT conditions in this study. The results showed the TC group had a lower lateral impulse and center of mass-center of pressure (COM-COP) ap/ml separation under the DT condition; Compared with the ST condition, the TC group increased foot clearance, the NE group increased their lateral impulse and COM-COP ml separation under the DT condition. Under DT, body stability decreased among the NE group, but the TC group had better body stability during stair ascent under both ST and DT conditions

    THE EFFECTS OF FOCUS OF ATTENTION ON THE LEARNING OF THE CLEAN WEIGHTLIFTING TECHNIQUE IN NOVICES

    The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of different focus of attention (FOA) feedback on the learning of the clean weightlifting technique. Sixteen participants naive to the task were divided into two groups (external and internal FOA) and attended three sessions of learning. Bar and lifter kinematics were measured prior to and after learning, and retention and transfer tests were performed seven days after protocol completion. Internal FOA feedback promoted greater reduction of the distance between the bar and the lifter’s body, whereas both types of feedback were found to be equally effective at modifying hip, knee and ankle flexion/extension patterns in the pulling phases of the lift. There seems to be insufficient evidence to advise coaches to choose one type of FOA feedback exclusively, as each approach could target different needs/stages of learning

    THE EFFECT OF A SPRING LOADED CANE ON UPPER AND LOWER EXTREMITY GROUND REACTION FORCES

    The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a spring loading cane mechanism on upper and lower extremity ground reaction forces during cane aided walking. Twenty-nine participants were fitted with a T-scope knee brace and cane with four spring loading compressions. Each participant walked five times over two force plates to collect ground reaction force data. A mixed factorial ANOVA revealed a significant interaction effect between spring cane loading compressions and extremity on measures of ground reaction forces, F(1.51,66.83)=7.18, p=0.003, η2=0.140. This outcome suggests that ground reaction forces decrease at the upper extremity and gradually increase at the lower extremity as the spring loading compressions of the cane decrease. This result may have implications for injury prevention and rehabilitation in cane aided walking
