    THE EFFECT OF HIP JOINT MUSCLE STRENGTH AND SIZE ON HIP JOINT ANGULAR VELOCITY DURING 110 M HURDLING MOTION

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hip joint flexor/extensor strength andsize on hip joint angular velocity during 110 m hurdling motion. To achieve this goal, we determined hip joint angular velocity during hurdling motion with high speed camera. We also measured isokinetic hip joint torque with a dynamometer, and measured the muscle volume of the psoas major muscle and hamstrings of the lead leg side with MRI. There were significant correlations between isokinetic hip joint flexor torque at 0.52 and 1.05 rad/s and hip joint flexion angular velocity (p = 0.04 and p = 0.02, respectively). There were no statistically significant correlations between muscle volume andjoint angular velocity. These results suggested that hip joint flexor strength ispossibly an important factor to swing up the lead leg quickly during hurdling motion

    SHOT SUCCESS AND KINEMATIC DIFFERENCES WITH ALTERING KICKING POSITION ON GOALSHOOTING TECHNIQUE IN AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL

    In Australian Football, goalshots are taken from a range of distances and angles to the goal. The aim of this study was to evaluate if performance and technique differed for goalshots from different sides of the posts. Seventeen players performed 10 goalshots from two different positions (45° to the left (L45) and 45° to the right (R45) of goals) on an Australian Football ground. Kicking kinematics were measured using the Xsens MVN link inertial measurement system (240Hz). Shot success was slightly better for kicks from the left (62 v 59%). Technical differences were limited with small effects evident for knee and shank angular velocity. Individual differences were evident that indicate that individual-based analysis is necessary for future goalshooting work

    UPPER LIMB JOINT ANGLES DID NOT DISTINGUISH SUCCESS OF THROW FOR A PROFESSIONAL DARTS PLAYER: PILOT CASE STUDY

    The purpose of this study was to identify upper limb kinematic differences between successful and unsuccessful darts throwing performance. One male semi-professional darts player attended a single data collection session in a laboratory setting. The player threw darts targeting either static accuracy (n = 36) or dynamic accuracy (randomised target for each throw, n = 60). The upper limb joint angles of successful and unsuccessful throws were compared for both accuracy conditions. Comparing successful and unsuccessful throws, there were no joint angle differences (statistical parametric mapping analysis = 0% time different) for any joint angle tested under either static or dynamic accuracy conditions

    CHANGE OF DIRECTION MOTION DURING THE DEFENSIVE PHASE IN SOCCER PLAYERS

    The purpose of the this study was to the change of direction (COD) movement in the backward direction during the defensive phase. Thirteen male soccer players performed the reactive agility test (RAT) and sprint running. Analysis classified the players to two groups according to the RAT time. There was no significant difference in sprint times, but RAT of the fast group was significantly faster than that of the slow group. Before and after COD of RAT, the fast group had made a deceleration quickly by high-step frequency. In the COD movement, the fast group performed the movement with their body tilted backward while lowering their center of gravity with the hip of the COD foot bent before COD and smaller knee flexion displacement during COD support phase. These findings seem to be a basic knowledge for evaluation and training of COD in soccer

    COMPARISON OF THE ACCELERATION PHASE OF SPRINTING BETWEEN COLLEGE SPRINTERS AND COLLEGE BASEBALL PLAYERS

    The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the sprinting movement of college sprinters and college baseball players, the latter are assumed to be specialized in the acceleration phase. Twenty subjects, 10 sprinters and 10 baseball players, participated in this study. Lower limbs joint angle (hip, knee and ankle), step length, step frequency, contact time and position of the center of mass at the toe-on and the toe-off were calculated. The results indicated that the center of mass of baseball players was located behind that of sprinters at the 3rd step toe on (p 0.008). In addition, the knee joint was significantly extended at the toe-on in the baseball players at the first and the second steps .These observations indicate that baseball players tend to contact with their foot more forward, and with their knees extended, compared to sprinters

    FORWARD AND FALSE STEP TECHNIQUES USED FOR SPRINT START IN A SIDEWAYS DIRECTION: WHICH IS SUPERIOR?

    The purpose of this study was to determine which technique is superior to in a standing sprint start in a sideways direction: the false step or forward step technique. Nine males performed 5 m sprints in a rightward direction starting with these two techniques. They took a first step in their right side with their right foot in the forward step trials, whereas they took a first step in their left side with their left foot in the false step trials. No significant differences were found between the two trial conditions in the sprint times for 1 m, 2 m, 3 m and 4 m. These results indicate that the start techniques made no difference in the performance in the sideways direction, although the superiority of the false step technique for the forward sprint start was reported previously. This finding suggests that the superiority of the sprint start techniques is dependent on the sprint direction

    COORDINATION VARIABILITY ASSOCIATED WITH ATTENDENCE TO A LONGITUDINAL REDUCING BIOFEEDBACK SCHEDULE

    The aim of this paper was to assess skill exploration via coordinated variability (CoordVar) during attendance to a longitudinal, reducing biofeedback (BFb) intervention. Novices (n=15 BFb; n=15 Control) were introduced to a lunge touch task. Visual BFb were given on the timing and magnitude of rear leg kinematics. A modified CI2 method (CI2area) was used to quantify CoordVar for rear leg joint couplings. Coefficient of variability was used to quantify CoM horizontal velocity as performance variability (PerfVar). Linear regression 95% confidence intervals were compared between groups to assess changes over time. The BFb group demonstrated increasing CoordVar as a response to the BFb, with all participants showing no change in PerfVar. This highlights the potential for CoordVar to identify the effectiveness of BFb provision by practitioners

    CHANGES IN RUNNING SPEED AND STEP VARIABLES MEASURED BY INERTIAL SENSORS DURING MARATHON

    The purpose of this study was to quantify endurance performance for a wide range of running population bymeasuring running speed and step variables using inertial sensors during marathon. The total of ninety-one runners (71 males and 20 females) participated in this studyand step variable data was measured by attaching inertial sensor, developed by Casio, at the sacrum. Runners were classified into sub-groups (3, 4, 5 & 6), based on race time.One-way RM ANOVA witnin sub-groups showed a significant decreasein running speed, step length, andvertical oscillation through the race but step frequency remained stable for most of the runners. The Sub 3 group showed high vertical stiffness in the initial stage of the race butsignificantly decreased throughout the race. Other groups showed significant decrease in running speed but no significant change in vertical stiffness. It might suggest that good runner could adjust vertical stiffness to keep optimal step length and running speed

    ISBS 2018 AUCKLAND CONFERENCE SIR GRAEME AVERY HONOUR AWARD CEREMONY

    Sir Graeme Avery’s 2014 knighthood was for services to business and sport. He was admitted to the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame in 2014. Sir Graeme was a 400m runner and played first grade rugby in Sydney. He has more than 45 years involvement in athletics at club, regional, national and international level. Sir Graeme founded Adis International, the medical publishing company he developed from scratch in 1963. This company is well known to sports biomechanists as it publishes the high impact factor journal Sports Medicine. A strong supporter of sport, especially athletics, Sir Graeme led the fundraising campaign to create the $85 million AUT Millennium, which is the site of AUT’s Sport Performance Research Institute New Zealand (SPRINZ) and the national training centre for high-performance sport and site of High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ). Since 2009, Sir Graeme has served as chairman of the AUT Millennium Ownership Trust, a position now held by AUT Vice Chancellor, Derek McCormack. He remains on the Trust as President. 300 elite athletes regularly train at AUT Millennium, and there are over 600,000 user-visits annually. Auckland University of Technology conferred Sir Graeme with an honorary doctorate in 2006 for his contribution to health publishing and contributions to elite and developmental sport in New Zealand. Sir Graeme is now leading the development of a scaled down version of the AUT Millennium in Hawke\u27s Bay to help support local sports talent and promote healthy lifestyles and enhanced mental wellbeing in the community. “I am so pleased that Sir Graeme Avery is being recognized, as he is such a kind man who was fundamental to athletics survival on the north shore and the Robin Tait Classic.” Beatrice Faumuinā NZOM.
