honeypot is a collection of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and hybrid work that closely examines some of the more intimate aspects of the human—and specifically the female—experience, such as motherhood, childlessness, oppression, repression, societal expectation, memory, rememory, and mental illness. This full-length collection includes more traditionally structured personal essays and memoir alongside non-linear narrative, vignette, flash, borrowed form, and magical realism

COMPARING FUNCTION-BASED MULTIPLE STIMULI WITHOUT REPLACEMENT AND PAIRED-CHOICE PREFERENCE ASSESSMENT RESULTS

    No full text
The results of a function-based multiple stimuli without replacement (MSWO) assessment and a paired-choice assessment (PC) were compared to determine whether the same stimuli options were identified. The two assessment procedures were conducted in a school setting with three participants who engaged in frequent problem behavior. An Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) served as the therapist for all phases of the assessments. Both the PC and MSWO assessment procedures identified the same stimuli option for all three participants. Strengths and limitations of the study are discussed as well as suggestions for future research

An Examination of Affective Blunting in Rodents

    Get PDF
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. The prevalence of MDD is 12% in men and 20% in women. Antidepressant drugs are the first line of treatment in Major Depressive Disorder and other mood disorders, particularly selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Affective blunting is a potential side effect of chronic SSRI treatment, which can be defined as a diminished response to pleasurable or unpleasant stimuli, and is indicated as a marked indifference towards engagement in activities. The present study looked to examine the effects of chornic fluoxetine (0.16g/L) administration on pre-test and post-test performance of a light aversion task and a sucrose preference test. The light aversion task presents subjects with a bright aversive light which can be terminated by a head-entry into an apparatus, and are measured as escape responses. The sucrose preference test measures amount of sucrose consumption pre and post treatment. A significance was found in the male fluoxetine group, who performed significantly less escape responses than before treatment. There were no significant differences between treatment groups found in female operant responding, nor in the sucrose preference test. This study is the first known attempt to exhibit affective blunting in an animal model

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF COMPUTER-BASED SIMULATIONS ON THE INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

    Get PDF
Interprofessional Education (IPE) is not unique as it is a concept that has been advocated for more than 40 years by the Institute of Medicine (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 2016). Interprofessional education occurs “when two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes” (World Health Organization [WHO], 2010, p. 13). It is a staple in the education of nurses and doctors; however, it is starting to make an appearance in Communication Sciences and Disorders programs. As a result, this is a topic of great interest to faculty teaching in the area of speech-language pathology. Interprofessional education, believed to be a catalyst for successful interprofessional clinical practice, is promoted by agencies worldwide (WHO, 2010). Teaching interprofessional collaboration within preclinical training experiences may allow students real-life opportunities to identify barriers, problem-solve situations, and practice the necessary skills to work as part of an interprofessional team. The purpose of this project is to provide an interprofessional, evidence-based learning experience for students in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences program. The research will focus on students’ perspective of interprofessional education and learning. The research on computer-based interactive simulations will examine how the activities are designed to ensure a high level of authenticity for interprofessional practice as well as how they are developed and evaluated for meeting students\u27 educational, clinical objectives and standards

Just a Chemical Imbalance: Exploring the Absence of the Social Etiology of Depression in Common Medical Websites

    Get PDF
In recent decades, depression has received increased attention in the United States. As diagnosed instances of depression rise, and as it has usurped all other conditions in both national and global disability costs, pressure continues to mount to address and mitigate the societal impacts of this seemingly unstoppable disease. While this has taken various forms, from campaigns to destigmatize mental illness to government entities devoting to reducing social costs of depression, the prevailing narrative proves incomplete. Despite a wealth of research supporting a direct link between social factors (such as life satisfaction and relational satisfaction) and instances of clinical depression, the predominant US paradigm surrounding this illness focuses almost exclusively on the biomedical model. This paper first presents a review of the literature in support of a social etiology of depression, and then compares that substantiated research to the language used on popular medical websites such as WebMD. Consequences of the disparity between the established research of what causes depression and mainstream public narrative are explored
