    Snow Ghost

    Get PDF
Kaden Edwards is living life on the precipice of achieving all his wildest dreams until fate intervenes. The fallout leaves his friends and family to pick up the pieces in the kind of winter wonderland people flock to from across the globe. Do all ski bums go to heaven? What happens to our loved ones after we’re gone? Is life in a mountain town all it’s cracked up to be? These are the questions Joe Rowles explores in his latest novel Snow Ghost, where death is hardly the end and life continues to make S-turns long after the protagonist meets his demise

Cuban Motivations for Sustainability: A Historical and Environmental Case Study of Permaculture in Eastern Cuba in the Face of Climate Change Impacts

    Get PDF
From March 2 to March 7, 2020, I attended a faculty-led study abroad trip in partnership with EcoThropic to Baracoa, Cuba. Conversations with EcoThropic Director Britt Basel, Humboldt National Park Scientist and Community Outreach Officer Porfilio Lopez, English Teacher and urban farmer Yayai, and a family that runs the permaculture garden of El Eden, informed my field research. The past informs the future; so I begin by explaining Cuban history and how events trickled into current permaculture practices in conjunction with climate change impacts

Make not a Mockery of Me: Feminine Performance and Masculine Mockery in Medea and A Midsummer Night’s Dream

    Get PDF
The paper focuses on Euripides’ Medea and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to analyze how tragedy and comedy address female freedom. In a history of drama, women tend to be underrepresented and submissive to their fellow male players. This paper examines how gender dynamics work in theatre, with a focus on how men use their speech to inhibit the autonomy of women. Utilizing gender scholarship from Judith Butler, the argument justifies Medea’s seemingly horrific actions and spotlights Helena as the driver of her play. These women’s quests allow audiences to explore the roles of women in the theatre, where art can portray fantasy while reflecting reality. Ultimately, Medea violently and Helena rhetorically creates her autonomy and thrives outside of patriarchal confines

TRACKING OF THE HAND “PRESSURE POINT” ON THE GRIP OF A RECURVE BOW: A WEARABLE SOLUTION

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to design and prototype a non-invasive wearable solution suitable for measuring speeds, accelerations and orientation of the hand-grip as well as the pressures between the hand and the grip of a recurve bow. Therefore, a device has been created that properly blends two technologies: an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a Force-Sensitive-Resistor (FSR) membrane. A preliminary evaluation of the device performance was conducted in collaboration with the Olympic athlete Mauro Nespoli. The obtained results demonstrate the potential of the proposed system, as well as highlight a number of interesting information from a biomechanical point of view, closely related to the shooting technique

KINEMATICS OF MEN STRIKING MOTION IN EIGHTH DAN KENDO PLAYERS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to explore the time series kinematic variations during the men striking motion in eighth dan kendo players. Moreover, the magnitude of the individual difference and timing at which it appeared were investigated. Ten eighth dan kendo players performed men striking towards one of two targets (men or kote) with maximum effort immediately after an LED lamp was lighted. The motions were recorded using a motion capture system. This study examined the time series kinematic variations during the men striking motion, and revealed that the movements of the shinai (sword), right and left shoulders, and right hip differed substantially among individuals from each standard deviation

THE USE OF UPPER LIMB PROSTHESIS OPTIMIZES LONG JUMP APPROACH KINEMATICS: A CASE STUDY OF AN ELITE T47 ATHLETE

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate approach run kinematics using an upper limb prosthesis. A European Τ47 long- and triple- jump champion with right upper-limb congenital deficiency was analyzed in simulated approach run-ups wearing prosthesis (PW) or not (NP). Two attempts in each condition were recorded (300 fps). Step characteristics and kinematic parameters were extracted for the deficient (DLS) and intact (HLS) sides with a 2D-DLT analysis during the early (EA) and late (LA) approach. Results revealed systematic asymmetry for step frequency and length in NP, with the latter reduced in PW. Horizontal velocity in both EA and LA was larger by 0.3 m/s in PW than NP. These results suggest that asymmetry of NP reduces approach run performance compared to PW

CHARACTERISTICS OF A WELL-DONE BREAKING PITCH IN BASEBALL

    Get PDF
This study aimed to quantify well-done breaking pitches as evaluated by experienced catchers in baseball. Twenty college baseball pitchers threw one pitch for each type of pitch that they typically played in a game. Pitched ball velocity, spin rate, spin component, and displacement were calculated. Nine catchers of the same team evaluated each breaking pitch (curveball, slider, and changeup) of all the pitchers, and the relationships between the catchers’ evaluation and the quantitative variables were then investigated. Thus, with respect to the curveball, significant correlations were observed between the catchers’ evaluation and total spin rate, back spin, and vertical displacement. With respect to the slider, significant correlation was observed between the catchers’ evaluation and ratio of the velocity of the slider relative to the fastball. With respect to the changeup, significant correlation was not observed for any of the variables. The results are expected to act as a good benchmark for pitchers to improve their breaking pitches
