CHAMELEON BOY: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL LITERARY CRITIQUE OF BIRACIAL SUBJECTS IN A RACIALIZED SOCIETY
In American society, race is a determining factor when realizing a salient identity. Social engagements, relationships, and the perception has of one’s self are all effected and choreographed by race. Deeply ingrained within our social structure race aims to categorize humanity into easily identifiable, yet reductive, categories. However, an issue arises when the addition of the mixed-race subject throws the sorting machine into a frenzy. Unable to categorize the racially ambiguous, American society chooses to conflate their physicality to another ethnic group or race or write them off as Other. The late Gloria Anzaldua’s investigation into the limitless possibilities present within biracial/multiethnic individuals which ran perpendicular to 20th century assumptions on the condition of the biracial subject. Therefore, in tandem with Anzaldua’s theory, will concern itself with that of the Other and how biracial subjects adapt or perish in a racialized system. To accomplish this goal, this work will draw upon personal experiences through autobiography and deconstruct the racial mechanisms at work. Then apply the reading of self to the reading of Danzy Senna Caucasia, which chronicles the coming of age story of Birdie Lee and her journey to self conceptualization. This dual reading of the self and text aim to emphasize the experiences that inform the ideal I of biracial individuals
Vanishing Ghosts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Charcoal Iron Industry
One of Michigan\u27s Upper Peninsula\u27s earliest industries was iron production, powered by dozens of charcoal iron furnaces. Charcoal was the fuel for the furnaces and the Upper Peninsula\u27s forests were devastated to produce it. Most of the charcoal was produced in huge brick or stone charcoal kilns, usually located at or near the furnaces, or along the railroad lines for easy transport to the furnaces. These kilns were the chief industry for many early settlements and were local landmarks. Tourists found the igloo-shaped kilns to be fascinating and called them Paul Bunyan\u27s beehives. Gradually, the charcoal kilns have deteriorated. Two reconstructed charcoal kilns have been built as reminders of the industry, one in Marquette and one in Fayette. In 1978 an inventory of Upper Peninsula historic engineering and industrial sites included all the most representative, best preserved charcoal kilns. The survey included then-current photographs of the kilns. This article complements an earlier one in the last volume of this journal that discussed Upper Peninsula charcoal kiln history; the 1978 inventory sites were revisited, and charcoal kiln condition and background are discussed. Includes are current photographs of all charcoal kilns discussed. Major sites were in Marquette, Harvey, Onota, Rock River, Mangum, Fayette, Wilson, Bark River, and Stephenson. New Methods for Assessing the Sustainability of Wood-burning Energy Facilities
Methods to assess wood-based bioenergy projects have tended to focus on technological and physical constraints. Less is known about how longer-term environmental, economic, and social systems—the three pillars of sustainable development—have influenced technological development in the context of woody biomass energy. This research offers new methods for assessing the sustainability of wood-based energy projects by combining spatial analysis, semi-structured interviews, and archival data analysis. By integrating quantitative and qualitative methods, this project offers ways to understand how social and environmental dynamics from the past shape technological development in the future. A propensity analysis of biomass energy plants in Michigan, USA was performed using US Census data grouped by social, economic, and environmental categories. This quantitative analysis helped to characterize community and landscape types in which woody biomass plants were developed in Michigan in the late-twentieth century. To help illustrate some of the often-hidden social and political dimensions of energy development, such as access to decision-making and attitudes toward bioenergy projects, transcripts of public hearings, media coverage, and other archival sources were examined, and 30 stakeholder interviews were conducted. By integrating these qualitative and quantitative approaches, this paper aims to provide a more comprehensive approach to assessing the sustainability of wood-based biofuel technologies
Visualizing Geometric Structures on Topological Surfaces
We study an interplay between topology, geometry, and algebra. Topology is the study of properties unchanged by bending, stretching or twisting space. Geometry measures space through concepts such as length, area, and angles. In the study of two-dimensional surfaces one can go back and forth between picturing twists as either distortions of the geometric properties of the surface or as a wrinkling of the surface while leaving internal measures unchanged. The language of groups gives us a way to distinguish geometric structures. Understanding the mapping class group is an important and hard problem. This paper contributes to visualizing how the mapping class group acts on geometric structures. We explore the geometry of closed, compact, and orientable two-dimensional manifolds through direct visualization and computation. We prove that the mapping class group of a torus is isomorphic to SL2Z via direct matrix multiplication on the generating elements of the fundamental group. While the fundamental group of the torus has only one possible presentation, up to homeomorphism; the case for the genus 2 surface is more complicated. We prove that an octagon representing a genus 2 surface can have its edges identified in different combinations to produce exactly four different possible presentations of fundamental groups. We explore surgeries on one of those types and show that surgeries that preserve that type are equivalent to Dehn twists on the surface, which are generators of the mapping class grou
AN EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACT OF HEALTH LITERACY ASSESSMENT ON INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES
Low health literacy levels limit healthcare outcomes in a variety of diagnoses. Having a low health literacy level can significantly impact an individual’s ability to manage their condition. Among these individuals are incarcerated individuals, who are especially vulnerable to low health literacy levels. Due to regulations of the correctional facility, along with the vulnerability of the population, it is often difficult to get approval for studies and to make changes within this setting[TMD1] . The stigma of incarceration, along with the difficulty in navigating the correctional setting regulations, often create barriers to making changes that could improve the health of incarcerated individuals. Few studies have been completed on health literacy levels of incarcerated individuals. The Newest Vital Sign is a reliable and valid tool that is being used in a multitude of settings and languages to assess health literacy levels. The purpose of this project was to determine health literacy levels of incarcerated individuals with type 2 diabetes in a Midwestern facility along with the impact of educational materials provided over a one-month period of time. Using the appropriate tools to determine health literacy along with proper literacy-leveled education is paramount to positive health outcomes[TMD2] . CEREBELLUM-SEEDED FUNCTIONAL CONNECTIVITY CHANGES IN TRAIT-ANXIOUS INDIVIDUALS UNDERGOING ATTENTION BIAS MODIFICATION TRAINING
Anxiety and anxiety related disorders are increasing at a drastic rate in the past decade, with the NIMH reporting that 31.1% of U.S. adults will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. Anxiety is commonly characterized by increased attention bias to threat. Attention Bias Modification (ABM) is a new treatment used to reduce individual’s attention bias towards threat. The extent to which ABM leads to underlying neural changes is still unknown. The cerebellum is a neglected brain structure, with new research provides evidence that cerebellum’s functional connectivity and shared networks with threat processing regions has a direct impact on anxiety etiology and symptomology. Therefore, the current study assessed functional connectivity changes seeded in cerebellum as an outcome of ABM training. The experiment consists of a 6-week ABM or control training period bookended by pre and post resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) sessions. Heightened trait anxiety was correlated with heightened connectivity from the cerebellum to threat processing regions. (i.e., the amygdala, ACC, and the thalamus). Decreased cerebellar connectivity to threat processing regions (i.e., the amygdala, ACC, and the thalamus) was observed following ABM training. This suggests that ABM may underly neural changes within the cerebellum—resulting in decreased attention bias. This also suggests the cerebellum may contribute to the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and attention bias. Limitations and future directions concerned with both ABM and the functional role of the cerebellum are discussed
