Objective. Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU) has an addictive potential for youngusers. The aim of this study was to show the prevalence of PSMU across Italian regionsand its association with health complaints.Materials and methods. Data are gathered from the Italian 2018 Health Behaviour inSchool-aged Children survey using a representative sample of Italian adolescents aged11, 13 and 15 years (50.6% males). Participants completed self-administered questionnairesassessing PSMU and health complaints.Results. PSMU affects 8.9% adolescents in Italy and the prevalence is quite consistentacross regions. 13-year-olds girls showed the highest percentage of PSMU (13%). Problematicusers of social media are more likely to report multiple somatic (OR = 1.84 [95%CI 1.82-1.85]) and psychological (OR = 2.60 [95% CI 2.58-2.63]) symptoms.Conclusions. PSMU represents a widespread problem in Italy. National prevention interventionsare needed in order to promote a positive use of social media

Physical activity as a tool for health promotion: the evolution of international strategies and interventions

    Get PDF
Physical activity (PA) has a great potential impact in the prevention and control of noncommunicablediseases. However, epidemiologic data reporting a high percentage of inactive people, still indicate a scarce perception of PA benefits. Therefore, in the past decades, a number of documents has been produced by international organizations with the aim of changing policies and institutional actions towards the promotion of PA. Several actions have been put in place and an evolution process in international strategies for PA promotion is ongoing. Nevertheless, there is a need to continue updating these policies in light of new knowledge about evidence-based PA health effects. A stimulatingdiscussion about effective PA promotion programs is useful for future planning of interventions. The aim of this work is to report the evolution of international strategies aimed to PA promotion, from early PA recommendations, to the recent WHO Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018-2030

Demographic and socio-economic determinants of poor HIV-risk perception at first HIV diagnosis: analysis of the HIV Surveillance data, Italy 2010-2016

Introduction. HIV infections in Italy has not undergone a substantial decline over recentyears. For this reason, we analysed risk-factors and socio-economic indicators ofHIV-risk perception in HIV surveillance data.Methods. An observational study was conducted and HIV-risk perception was estimatedon the basis of reasons for undergoing testing. Ordinal logistic models were applied withthree groups of response corresponding to three ordered levels of HIV-risk perception.Results. The study included 18 055 individuals: 27% with low, 40% moderate and 33%with high perception. A low risk perception was estimated in both areas, least deprivedand highly deprived [Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 1.58, CI: 1.14-2.18 and AOR =2.33, CI: 1.39-3.90]; for heterosexuals (AOR = 1.96, CI: 1.83-2.11), Injecting Drug Users(IDU) (AOR =1.82, CI: 1.59-2.08), low education (AOR = 1.74. CI: 1.20-2.54), age> 40 years (AOR = 1.59, CI: 1.50-1.69), males (AOR = 1.30, CI: 1.20-1.40).Conclusions. In Italy there is a high percentage of HIV-infected people with poor HIVriskperception. Poorer HIV-risk perception was associated with both, least and highdeprivation, low education, older age, male gender, heterosexual and IDU groups. Ourresults could be relevant to address targeted HIV testing policies at both local and nationallevels

Tailored screening and dedicated funding for direct acting antiviral drugs: how to keep Italy on the road to hepatitis C virus elimination?

    Get PDF
Background and aims. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination for Italy is an ambitious, but achievable goal. In Italy, there is political will, which aims to achieve the World HealthOrganization (WHO) elimination goals recognizing the need to identify undiagnosed individuals in key high-risk groups and in the general population, however there is concernregarding HCV treatment implementation in Italian Regions.Methods. A modelling analysis was conducted, using the “Italy Polaris” model, to forecastthe impact of different HCV treatment rates in achieving the HCV elimination goals inItaly. The model assessed two treatment scenarios: 2018 Scenario and 2019 Scenario, usingthe annually HCV treatment rate in Italy.Results. Considering a high treatment rate, as assumed by the 2018 Scenario, all HCVelimination targets would be achieved. Considering the 2019 Scenario, in which a decreasingnumber of newly diagnosed individuals and as consequence, a decline in thenumber of treated patients, were assumed, only the 65% HCV mortality reduction wouldbe an achievable goal in Italy. The other elimination targets could be achievable over 7years later than the year 2030.Conclusions. Establishing an ad hoc fund for DAAs for each Italian Region, binding resourcesboth for case finding, through active screening and activities for rapid linkage tocare and treatment, is of paramount importance, in order to keep Italy on track to achievethe WHO elimination targets by 2030

Individual planning starts at school. Tools and practices promoting autonomy and supporting transition to work for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder

    Get PDF
AbstractThere is an increasing need for effective services and strategies to favor the transitionfrom school to post-school/working experience for individuals with disabilities and specificallywith autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Post-school options are still limited, andmost adults with ASD struggle in finding adequate and stable job opportunities. Thiswork analyzes the increasing number of laws issued in Italy in the last decades in orderto improve social and working inclusion. The central role of the individual educationalplanning (IEP) as part of the broader individual project is discussed. Also the potentialof pathways for transversal skills and orientation for future employment outcomes istaken into consideration. Good practices promoting autonomy and supporting transitionto work starting from school years are reviewed. The international literature showsdifferent models and tools, which could be applied to the Italian school. The COMPASSconsultancy model could favor the achievement of individualized transition IEP goals.Peer mediated intervention could improve social skills, a core weakness in ASD, thougha central element for success in the workplace. Another key element is the parental involvementin the construction of the future of their children with ASD

AbstractThe Integrated and Disability Health Program (IDHP) of Bologna deals with the assessmentand treatment of both young and adults with high and low functioning autismspectrum disorder (ASD). The IDHP and Alstom Ferroviaria SPA started a highly innovativeproject for the employment of young adults diagnosed with high functioningASD. The project consisted of a six months’ internship, for a total amount of 560 hours, and a renewal for another 6 months and involved a group of 5 young adults with highfunctioningASD, aged between 18 and 42 years, coming from Bologna or the suburbs.During the internship, a job coach trained in autism spectrum disorders was provided byIDHP. The intervention was based on Behavioral Skills Training (BST). As a result, thefollowing advantages of BST model were found: very effective in small group; learningoccurred by observation and modelling, feedback was received by the trainer and othergroup members
