A philosophical investigation of catchwords in Chinese

    Get PDF
Catchwords spread rapidly because of their simple form and strong replicability. New catchwords enter our daily life every once in a while. Therefore, the study of catchwords is extremely urgent, because the study of language is the study of human life. This article takes the catchword ‘wo keneng yudao le jia N’ (I might encounter fake N) as an example to discuss its internal structure (which has been largely ignored in the existing research). The focus is on the study of the adjective ‘fake’ and its combined meaning with the noun after. Based on this, the meaning generation mechanism of the catchword is analyzed, including the relationship between necessity and probability, the evolution of meaning of the catchword, and the precipitation of construction meaning. Finally, the philosophical basis of communicative mechanism of the catchword is clarified. The main line of this study is to provide philosophical foundation for the popularity of catchwords

The Undisclosed Chapter of the Textbook on Electrical Engineering

    Get PDF
A special point was found in the frequency characteristics of the oscillatory circuit, which was not mentioned earlier in textbooks on electrical engineering and radio engineering. The module of complex resistance of the circuit does not depend on the value of the active resistance at a frequency less than  times that of the resonance. The material is of interest to all engineers and scientists specializing in electrical engineering. On its basis, new methods for measuring the parameters of electrical circuits can be developed. Physical interpretation of the phenomenon doesn't exist at the moment

Mechanical properties and flexural behaviour of fibrous cementitious composites containing hybrid, kenaf and barchip fibres in cyclic exposure

    Get PDF
In this study, the mechanical properties and flexural behaviour of the fibrous cementitious composites containing hybrid, kenaf and barchip fibres cured in cyclic exposure were investigated. Waste or by-product materials such as pulverized fuel ash (PFA) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) were used as a binder or supplementary cementitious to replace cement. Barchip and kenaf fibre were added to enhance the mechanical properties and flexural behaviour of the composites. A seven mix design of the composites containing hybrid, kenaf and barchip fibre mortar were fabricated with PFA-GGBS at 50% with hybridization of barchip and kenaf fibre between 0.5% and 2.0% by total volume weight. The composites were fabricated using 50 × 50 × 50 mm, 40 × 40 × 160 mm and 350 × 125 × 30 mm steel mould. The flexural behaviour and mechanical performance of the PFA-GGBS mortar specimens were assessed in terms of load-deflection response, load compressive response, and crack development, compressive and flexural strength after cyclic exposure for 28 days. The results showed that specimen HBK 1 (0.5% kenaf fibre and 2.0% barchip fibre) and HBK 2 (1.0% kenaf fibre and 1.5% barchip fibre) possessed good mechanical performance and flexural behaviour. As conclusion, the effect of fibres was proven to enhance the characteristics of concrete or mortar by reducing shrinkage, micro crack and additional C-S-H gel precipitated from the pozzolanic reaction acted to fill pores of the cement paste matrix and cement paste aggregate interface zone between mortar matrix and fibre bonding.

The European Institute for Innovation through Health Data (i~HD) has been formed as one of the sustainable entities arising from the Electronic Health Records for Clinical Research (EHR4CR) and SemanticHealthNet projects, in collaboration with other European Commission projects and initiatives. The vision of i~HD is to become the European organisation of reference for guiding and catalysing the best, most efficient and trustworthy uses of health data and interoperability, for optimizing health and knowledge discovery.i~HD has been established in recognition that there is a need to tackle areas of challenge in the successful scaling up of innovations that rely on high-quality and interoperable health data, to sustain and propagate the results of eHealth research, and to address current-day obstacles to using health data. i~HD was launched at an inaugural conference in Paris, in March 2016. This was attended by over 200 European clinicians, healthcare providers and researchers, representatives of the pharma industry, patient associations, health professional associations, the health ICT industry and standards bodies. The event showcased issues and approaches, that are presented in this paper to highlight the activities that i~HD intends to pursue as enablers of the better uses of health data, for care and research

Socio-demographic Correlates of Psychological Well-being among Older Adults in Bhutan

    Get PDF
Well-being is a complex combination of physical, psychological, emotional, and social health factors of a person. The feeling of well-being is essential for the overall health of a person and enables them to be successful and achieve what they want in life. There is a paucity of study on the well-being of older adults in Bhutan. This study attempted to assess how older adults in Bhutan perceive their well-being and determine their socio-demographic correlates. The World Health Organization five well-being indexes were applied to measure well-being. Findings indicated above average well-being score with the nature of the relationship with children, education level, and employment status as independent correlates. Efforts to enhance the relationship between family members could be more relevant for the well-being of older adults. Further research on well-being is required to incorporate determinants other than socio-demographic variables

Multistage auto-ignition of undiluted methane/air mixtures under engine-relevant condition

    Get PDF
Gas-phase auto-ignition delay times (IDTs) of methane/“air” (21% O2/79% Ar) mixtures were measured behind reflected shock waves, using a kinetic shock tube. Experiments were performed at fixed pressure of 1.8 MPa and equivalence ratios of 0.5 and 1.0, over the temperature range of 800–1000 K. Overall, the effect of equivalence ratio on IDT is negligible at entire temperatures measured in this study. The difference from traditional ignition regime at high temperatures, the undiluted methane/air mixtures present a four-stage ignition process at lower temperatures, namely deflagration delay, deflagration, deflagration-detonation transition, and detonation. Four popular kinetic mechanisms, UBC Mech 2.1, GRI Mech 3.0, Aramco Mech 2.0, and USC Mech 2.0, were used to simulate the new measurements. Only UBC Mech 2.1 showed satisfactory predictions in the reactivity of the undiluted methane mixtures; it was, thus, adopted to perform sensitivity analysis for identifying dominant reactions in the ignition process. The difference in channels contributing ȮH radicals causes a reduced global activation energy with decreasing temperatures. Keywords: Methane; multistage ignition; shock tube; sensitivity analysi

Marked causative structures of Chinese verb-resultative construction

    Get PDF
This paper aims to study the syntactic and semantic features of ‘marked VRC causative structures’, those special syntactic-semantic structures formed by verb-resultative constructions (VRCs) which violate both the Uniformity of Theta Assignment Hypothesis and the Thematic Hierarchy. Their syntactic and semantic features are defined as follows: 1) VRC has a causative relation within itself; 2) the argument in the object position is the causee and the only argument of the resultative complement; 3) the causer in the subject position is any conceptual component from the cause event other than the agent of the predicate verb. This paper then attempts to propose an extended account to expound how they are formed syntactically and semantically. On this account, a marked VRC causative structure is re-causativization of a VRC when the VRC is self-causative; it enables other conceptual components of the cause event than the agent to become the causer when a VRC is not self-causative. There are some constraints on what becomes the causer of a marked VRC causative structure
