Of Gaps and Gossip: Intimacy in the Archive
No full textArguing for gossip’s relevance in the archive, this article examines the surviving private material relating to Charlotte Cushman (1816–1876). Cushman was the most celebrated American actress of the nineteenth century yet spent most of her life in an expatriate community in Rome, where she shared her home with other female artists. Analysing letters, diaries, and related forms of life writing by Cushman herself as well as by friends and family, this article pursues two goals: First, it accounts for how a fear of gossip (by Cushman and her family) might have shaped the gaps in the collection concerning Cushman’s sexual and romantic relationships. Second, it makes the case for the archival traces of gossip as evidence in writing the story of Cushman’s intimate life. The article thus reflects on the role of gossip and privacy in “intimate archives” (Dever et al. 2010) and contemplates their relevance to Cushman as an insightful case study of LGBTQ history. The Economist as Futurologist: The Making and the Public Reception of the Perspektivstudien in Switzerland, 1964–1975
No full textIn the 1960s, long-term studies of the future that forecasted the development of a country became fashionable in the Western world. Whereas certain countries prioritized a multidisciplinary approach, in which both economic development and social change were taken into account, others only considered the development
of economic variables and in particular economic growth. The Perspektivstudien, which projected the future of Switzerland 30 years ahead, focused solely on the economic development of the country, implicating that political events had no impact on economic development in the long run. This contribution traces back the conceptualization of the economy as a separated sphere that was inherent to the Perspektivstudien and investigates the historical context in which they were created. This chapter shows that to understand the emergence of those studies, Keynesianism
has to be taken into account as a governmentality in which the idea of a macroeconomic controllability prevailed. Furthermore, the contribution suggests to conceptualize those long-term forecasts not as mere descriptions of possible outcomes, but as performative economic knowledge that invented an a-historical future.https://www.peterlang.com/view/title/7142

No full textIn an age of digitalization and information overflow, it is of particular importance to offer students strategies to read and navigate the world they live in. The Information and Media Literacy project at the University of Passau intends to enable future teachers to become literate in the digital age by empowering pre-service teachers to collect, sort, critically evaluate, and subsequently produce and distribute information. Additionally, the awareness of and the reflection on the role of the media is just as essential, and thus, media-literacy education is a crucial part in this endeavor. This article discusses what information and media-literacy education can look like in practice. On this basis, a typology of surveillance narratives is developed, with the four fields 1) surveillance state, 2) surveillance mentality, 3) desire for surveillance and 4) self-monitoring. These are distinguished and differentiated by means of various media examples. The Twin Who Came from Abroad: The Comedy of Errors and Transcultural Adaptation
No full textThis article traces some of the adaptation history of Shakespeare’s twin farce, The Comedy of Errors. The play highlights some of the paradoxes inherent in Shakespeare’s status in the field of adaptation, as it is often perceived as a rather derivative effort. By delivering a more detailed reading of Angoor (1982), Gulzar’s film adaptation of the play, I want to argue for the significance of transcultural adaptations when it comes to upending some of the established hierarchies inherent in adaptation studies. Moreover, the chapter highlights the theme of dubious births and the problem of primogeniture to conceptualize adaptation itself as a form of twinship
