Concrete Horizons: Romantic Irony in the Poetry of David Malouf and Samuel Wagan Watson
No full textDrawing on Bernd Mahr’s model theory, this volume introduces a new approach to Romanticism in contemporary Australian literature. Focusing on two very different authors, David Malouf and the Indigenous poet Samuel Wagan Watson, this book highlights their similarities rather than their differences. It is the first book-length study dedicated specifically to each author’s poetic oeuvre. Comprehensive readings reveal that an ironic dialectic underpins how each poet writes from within a disjunct of culture and environment following colonisation, finding hope in dialogue and a productive process of negative assertion. The theoretical framing of Romanticism developed here effectively rehabilitates Romanticism as a productive paradigm in contemporary Australian poetry.https://www.peterlang.com/view/title/7314

No full textLa lengua escrita canónica no es suficiente para nombrar lo escuchado, percibido y sentido por quienes habitan en las comunidades ancestrales, ya sean mestizas, indígenas o africanas. Las poéticas de la transculturación alcanzan su mayor desarrollo en las novelas de las décadas de 1950 a 1970. La escritura, mediada por la oralidad y la tradición popular, es identificada por Ángel Rama como la propia de la transculturación cuyas obras emblemáticas son las de escritores como Rulfo, Arguedas, Guimaraes Rosa, Roa Bastos y García Márquez. El planteamiento de Ángel Rama es reivindicado por Carlos Pacheco y Francoise Perus. Identificar los rasgos de la transculturación para desentrañar las cosmovisiones sobre América Latina, subyacentes en los monodiálogos, es el horizonte de estas reflexiones; ello implica explicar la manera como la escritura literaria reconfigura la fuerza de la oralidad y las cosmovisiones de las comunidades periféricas: no sentimos que leemos sino que escuchamos, como se ilustrará aquí con la obra de Juan Rulfo.The canonic western written word is insufficient to name what and how ancestral communities (be them Mestizo, Indigenous or Africans) experience, hear, feel and sense the world they inhabit. In the case of Latin America, transculturated poetics come to their major growth in the novels written between 1950 and 1970. Angel Rama identifies as a key characteristic of transculturation the written texts mediated by oralities and popular cultures. For him, exemplary of this type of writing are authors such as Rulfo, Arguedas, Guimaraes Rosa, Roa Bastos and García Márquez. Rama’s proposition is supported by Carlos Pacheco and Francoise Perus. The goal of this paper is to identify the characteristics of transculturation and to unveil the cosmovisions on Latin America that underlie below the monodialogues. This entails explaining how literature might reconfigure and incorporate the force of orality and the cosmovisions of what is regarded by the West as “peripheric” communities: more than a process of reading, we are left with the feeling of hearing a story, as it will be shown in this article with Juan Rulfo’s text
Translating the History of Race: Indigenous Australian Literature in German
No full textGerman interest in, and reception of, Indigenous Australian cultures have a long and also burdened history. With the emergence of German translations of Indigenous literature in the 1980s – that is, literature not about, but penned by, Indigenous authors – one-sided politics of representations and thus also stigmatised images started to change. Yet, the translation of literature per se does not simply entail a representation free of clichés and prejudices. Cultural knowledge cannot be simply rendered ‘correct’ according to the regimes of the source culture, but need to be adapted to the regimes of the target cultures. This article focuses on the ways the manifold concepts of race have been translated into three German audiobooks. Important aspects of race, it shows, have been lost in translation, while the racial history of the target culture poses new challenges for a literature that is intricately enmeshed with race and that seeks to rebut racism
Joshua Whitehead's Jonny Appleseed and Two-Spirit Resurgence
No full textThis article explores how Joshua Whitehead’s novel Jonny Appleseed discusses the complexities of being Two-Spirit on the reserve and in the city in Canada, exposes the double oppression and erasure of Two-Spiritedness, and demonstrates the possibility—and necessity—of queering the struggle for Indigenous resurgence. This article connects Two-Spirit theory with Native feminist theories (and their analyses of heteropatriarchy) and Qwo-Li Driskill’s concepts of “colonized sexuality” and a “Sovereign Erotic.” By close reading the novel and focusing on the themes of performance, erasure, shame, ceremony, and the body, this article aims to show the ways Indigeneity and queerness are interconnected and constantly re-negotiated. This article also aims to show how these links expose the underlying structural heteronormativity and heteropatriarchy in settler colonialism and Indigenous resurgence discourses. It suggests the possibility of radically revising the struggle for resurgence by centering Two-Spiritedness and understanding Two-Spirit desires and identities as inherently anti-colonial
Die Demaskierung des Virus oder die Konstruktion einer historischen Analogie: Der Pressespiegel des Dr. John Howard L. Cumpston und die ‘Spanische Grippe’ von 1918-1920 in Australien
No full textAt least 15,000 Australians died as a result of the so-called ‘Spanish Flu’ between 1918 and 1920. The administrative strategies for containment remained primarily the responsibility of the government authorities – successes and failures in fighting the pandemic correlated with the degree of harmonization between medical advice, official rules and civic responsibility. Dr. John Howard L. Cumpston who in 1921 became the first Australian Director-General of the Department of Health created a large volume of press cuttings on the influenza epidemic. This set ’appears to have been collected for use in the preparation of a series of official pamphlets‘. Today, this press kit sheds light on Australia’s contemporary view of the ’Spanish Flu‘. The following analysis illustrates Australia’s response to the spread of the virus (also with regard to the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic after exactly 100 years) under the aspects of collective action and individual denial – without arguing for a historical analogy
Beyond Shame in Barry Jenkins's Moonlight (2016)
No full textShame is frequently racialized, gendered, and sexualized. The 2016 film Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins, is a cultural touchstone in these terms. Through its success at the 89th Academy Awards, it brought to mainstream audiences a complex depiction of black, queer masculinities that move beyond shame. Moonlight follows a black man through three episodes in his life as he seeks to find agency in hypermasculine spaces wherein his potential queerness and aversion to dominance and aggression leads to isolation and shame. Through the lens of queer temporalities, I show how conventional queer narratives are subverted in Moonlight through opportunities of intimacy. I offer an analysis of the film’s depiction of queerness as an unfixed category and show how the aesthetics underscore the idea of indeterminacy
