Some Things Are Better Unknown: Confronting Traditional Practices of Prophecy in African Cultural Beliefs through Ola Rotimi's The Gods Are Not to Blame

    Get PDF
In contemporary Nigeria, the proliferation of prophetic claims has profoundly influenced popular religious practices across all societal strata. This phenomenon engages individuals from various backgrounds as they seek divine insights and prophecies from spiritual leaders. This study focuses on Ola Rotimi's play The Gods Are Not to Blame to critically examine the role of prophecy within African cultural beliefs. While existing scholarship on Rotimi's work often analyzes themes of fate, tragedy, and the allocation of blame within the play among others, scant attention has been paid to the fundamental role of prophecy itself as the root cause of the play’s tragic events. This research aims to conduct a deconstructive reading of the play, scrutinizing how the characters' pursuit of foreknowledge and attempts to alter their fates paradoxically precipitate their destinies. The method involves a detailed textual analysis of the play, focusing on key dialogues and actions that highlight the characters' motivations and the unfolding of events. The findings reveal two key instances: first, Baba Fakunle’s prophecy, which foretells disaster for Odewale’s family, leads his parents to attempt to kill him to prevent the predicted calamity. Ironically, this attempt to alter the future sets in motion the very disaster they sought to avoid. Secondly, an elder’s parable causes Odewale to discover the prophecy's truth. In trying to understand and avoid his destiny, Odewale discovers that his actions to prevent it end up fulfilling it. Both instances suggest that the desire to know and change the future is fraught with peril, often precipitating the very outcomes one seeks to avoid. The conclusion emphasizes the prudence of embracing the uncertainty of the future, as attempting to alter it can lead to unintended and often tragic consequences

Buginese migrants are present in various historical narratives. Every historian also has a different way of presenting their narrating process. Those historical narratives gave birth to various notions of Buginese migrants. One of the notions often attributed by historians to Buginese migrants is that their lives are almost always associated with the sea. The purpose of this research is to examine how historians present Buginese migrants in their historical narratives. This research uses the historical narrative research model developed by Hayden White. There are three concepts elaborated by Hayden White used in this study, namely, the concepts of “representation,” “individual,” and “morals.” These concepts are theoretical tools for analyzing four historical texts about Buginese migrants. The results of these analyses become a historiographical critique. This research found that every historian has a different identification of Buginese migrants in each of their narratives. The Buginese people in Johor are identified as closely connected with power by Kesuma. Buginese people in Bali are associated with trade by Suwitha. The Buginese people in Kamal Muara are closely associated with fishermen by Said and Prabowo. Lastly, Buginese people in Ambon are associated with Islam by Soleh. Each historian has a different position in narrating Buginese migrants. Their tendencies are affected by their own background

The Rhetorical Model of Indonesian Research Article Introductions (RAIs) in the Law Discipline: Problems and Opportunities

    Get PDF
The issue of internationalizing academic works into English Scopus-indexed journals has been becoming a growing concern in Indonesia in the last few years. However, investigating rhetorical models of local research articles is still very limited in the Indonesian context to date, while finding this foundation that underpins the global issue may overcome and create awareness for Indonesian academics for the likelihood of publishing their academic papers into reputable journals. This paper attempted to investigate the rhetorical model of Indonesian Law RAIs because none has investigated it in this selected discipline. The purpose is to discover whether or not it is different from earlier findings in English and Indonesian models. The data in the present study are 15 Indonesian Law RAIs published in accredited Science and Technology Index journals (SINTA 2). For the analysis, the study employed a genre-based study using two rhetorical models as primary code analysis. The results revealed that the Indonesian Law RAIs in the present study have a different rhetorical model from the English model, the CARS model. The main difference is the ways of establishing a niche. This finding implies that it may become an obstacle for Indonesian authors in this discipline, on the one hand, but may become an opportunity for them to publish their academic works in reputable journals, on the other hand

    Get PDF
This study focuses on Connor Kenway's struggles seeking freedom as an American Indian in the game Assassin's Creed III (2012). Three problems will be examined in the video game: the portrayal of Connor, Connor's struggle with the colonizer in his search for freedom, and the meaning of freedom for Connor as an American Indian. This study is library research using a post-colonial perspective. Three theories are applied to answer the research problems: the theory of characterization, the theory of post-colonialism, and the theory of freedom. The theory characterization is applied when analyzing the portrayal of Connor in the video game. Post-colonial theory is referred to when examining the power dynamics and inequalities that emerge when one culture or nation subjugates another, which later causes Connor to struggle. The theory of freedom is the reference when describing the meaning of freedom for Connor. The results of this study show that Connor is portrayed as an ambitious, fearless, skilled, loyal, dedicated, and stubborn figure. Connor's struggles start when he first becomes an Assassin, meets his mentor, carries out various missions against the colonial, and even kills his father, who has different views on freedom from him. For Connor, freedom is more than just political independence. It is about the right to live according to one's values and traditions, creating a more just and equitable society, and recognizing the freedom of all peoples, not just one particular group or nation

This study aims to explore Thai international students’ attitudes towards teaching approaches maximizing their second language (L2) learning motivation and engagement and the motivating and demotivating factors influencing their L2 learning experiences during the transition from EFL to EMI contexts. The participants, selected by the purposive sampling method, were five senior Business English major undergraduates in southern Thailand who were enrolled as international students in a Chinese multilingual university for two semesters. Semi-structured interviews were employed, and qualitative data was inductively analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that all participants felt motivated and engaged to take the English for International Business and Trade course within the field of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the EMI Business Program. They tended to sustain their intended effort to complete communicative-based tasks and term projects related to their future professional goals, acquire specialized business knowledge, and develop digital literacy skills. Despite experiencing fluctuating motivation and transitional challenges, they reported their native-speaker teacher helped them reduce their constraints regarding English language use by editing their writing tasks and presentation scripts. Furthermore, they developed their English language proficiency, L2 self-confidence, and intercultural competence. These findings illuminate several factors influencing the student sojourners’ L2 learning motivation and engagement in EMI settings. The study sheds light on the pedagogical implications of implementing practical courses and developing the instructional quality of the curriculum in internationalized higher education institutions

Women's struggles due to patriarchal domination do not only occur in the Bible. This has also been felt by women throughout the ages, including in the Kanayatn Dayak culture. The interpretation and implementation of the sacred texts of the Bible are dominated by men, so that the space for women to reflect on themselves as imago-dei and the image of God in women is very narrow. Not infrequently women who are already rooted in patriarchal culture consider this to be normal and without needing improvement. By historcal-critisizm approach for understanding concept of El-Shadday and Ethnography-Thick Description for the concept of Jubata Panange as God with a female face, which is read cross-textually as an effort to present feminist theology with a new nuance, namely the cultural context of Dayak Kanayatn.

In present times, many ecclesiastical laws are difficult to understand. This also has an impact on its application. There are some rules that are difficult to apply in certain situations. This is due to context mismatch; laws formulated based on a particular context are applied to a different context. The main question of this article is whether there is an appropriate way or norm to guide the understanding and application of rules that are sometimes out of context? How to overcome the tension between law and reality or law and moral subjects? Library research will be used to answer these questions. The library method is a series of activities related to collecting library data, reading and recording and processing research materials. According to Thomas Aquinas, Epikeia is a virtue related to the virtue of legal justice. Epikeia as a virtue will help us in applying relevant moral norms in concrete situations. This virtue comes to the rescue of the moral agent especially when he is faced with a conflict between the essence of the law or written rules.

ANALYZING COLLAGE AS A COMMUNICATION ACT IN THE DIGITAL AGE BASED ON THE DADAISM RENEWAL MOVEMENT'S SPIRIT

    Get PDF
Collage combines the semiotic tradition of Roland Barthes, the phenomenological tradition of Edmund Husserl, the critical tradition of Karl Marx, and the point of view of Jurgen Habermas in visual communication. The collage technique creates trans-aesthetic elements and double codes, a Dadaist method of encoding signs. Building on previous research, this study explores collage art as a communication act and its process in the digital era. Digital photography technology and computer software facilitate quicker and easier creation of collage art, emphasizing the fundamental concept of "paste." This pasting-sticking process mirrors the communication process of art and design in the digital era, illustrating cyclical communication capable of transcending space and time. The research has several conclusions. (1) By enhancing visual communication strategies and efficiency based on the spirit of the Dadaism renewal movement, unique collages can be created as a personal sign of message(s). (2) Collages as communication act in the digital era represent dialogue in trans-aesthetics code. (3) On the other hand, with the spirit of Dadaism that contains a free mind, open creation, and emphasis on social-cultural issues, collages as a communication process are also possible to frame messages and create fallacy
