TO BE BRAVE: HEROISM AND BRAVERY IN NEIL GAIMAN’S CORALINE

    Get PDF
The paper explores the themes of Heroism and Bravery, which are abundant in Fantasy literature. With reference to the existing literature, these concepts are defined and differentiated, and their relevance in Fantasy literature is delineated. A close reading of Neil Gaiman’s Fantasy novel, Coraline (2002), is used to exemplify the use of these themes. I argue that heroism is a socially and historically constructed trope that defines the journey of the protagonist (typically, of a male “hero”), whereas bravery lies in individual acts of courage and determination in the face of danger. This line of argument is undertaken by conducting a formal and textual analysis of Coraline, providing ample references to the heroism and bravery of its protagonist, to highlight further how the novel helps its young readers deal with the realities of the world they live in

Exposure of Histone Deacetylase-2 Inhibitor Curcumin and Its Analogues in Self-Nano Emulsifying Drug Delivery System Change Memory and Cognitive Function, Anxiety, and Social Interaction Behavior in Mouse

Class 1 and 2 histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACI) have been reported as novel therapeutic approaches to treat neurodegenerative disorders, depression, anxiety, and cognitive deficits. HDACI ameliorated deficits in cognition and stress-related behaviors in a wide range of neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Preclinically, behavioral bioassay can be used to predict the influence of new compounds for treatment of these illnesses. Curcumin and its new analogues PGV-0 and PGV-1 have been reported to inhibit HDAC2. However, reports regarding the effect of curcumin and its analogues on memory and cognitive function, anxiety, and social interaction behavior are as yet to be examined. Mice were divided into control and treated groups. Brain disorder was induced by oral administration of 10% ethanol in sodium-CMC for 7 days. Curcumin, PGV-0, PGV-1, and sodium butyrate (as positive control) were then given orally once a day for 21 days. The behavior tests of social interaction, open field, radial 8-arm-maze, and passive avoidance were performed on day 29. To increase dissolution and bioavailability of the compounds, they were formulated in a self-nano emulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS). Brains were isolated and analyzed using PCR to investigate the expression of genes related to neurobehavioral disorders hdac2, trkB, and bdnf. In different doses, curcumin, PGV-0, and PGV-1 increased social interaction capability, declined anxiety level, and improved long-term memory and cognitive function. The mechanism proposed is: HDACI curcumin and its analogues (PGV-0 and PGV-1) that keep the histone protein in acetylation state increase bdnf expression. The increased trkB expression is increasing the activation of the bdnf gene because trkB is the primary receptor of bdnf that supports the survival of existing neurons and encourages the growth and differentiation of new neurons and synapses. Thus, those mechanisms could improve long-term memory and cognitive function, increase social interaction, and reduce anxiety in ethanol-induced mice with brain disorders

EMPOWERING LANGUAGE LEARNING: THE CRITICAL ROLE OF MODERATORS IN DUOLINGO’S GERMAN DISCUSSION BOARDS

    Get PDF
Asynchronous discussion boards provide learners with an online platform to collaborate and communicate. This study aims to investigate the pivotal role of moderators in managing and enhancing the dynamics of asynchronous discussion boards in Duolingo’s German language learning environment. There are nearly nine million individuals who use Duolingo to learn German. This study implemented netnography to examine six moderators on Duolingo German language discussion boards. From an initial potential pool of 12 participants, two participants were chosen at random from three levels of engagement: high, moderate, and lower, for a total of six moderators. Moderators who commented at least 150 times were considered highly engaged; those with at least 25 comments were moderately engaged, and those with fewer than 25 comments were lower engaged. Data collection involved analyzing comments posted between 2013 and 2022. The study examined the frequency of comments, number of language badges, German course level, total posts, and years using Duolingo. However, activities occurring ‘behind the scenes,’ such as deleting inappropriate comments and providing feedback to developers, were not analyzed. The analysis covered 26 discussion boards, with five boards per participant, except for one user. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in moderator behavior and its impact on learner engagement. This methodology supported the investigation of how Duolingo German moderators oversee asynchronous discussion boards, allowing us to analyze and understand the evolving needs and engagement levels of learners within this online community. The results of the netnography showed that there were three themes. The findings support past research, which suggests the moderator role extends beyond mere oversight, providing management of online discussion boards, contributing significantly to the success of language learning programs, and enhancing the overall learning experience

HUMOUR AND LINGUISTIC FEATURES OF AFRICAN FOLKTALES

    Get PDF
African folktales manifest intricate and peculiar linguistic features, making their performance remarkable and invigorating. This paper explores the dual impact of humour and linguistic features on the written and performative nature of African folktales, arguing that the linguistic features of African folktales are imbued with humour which enlivens their oral performances. The data utilised in this study were harvested from folktales across Africa, including some collected during oral performances in Ipe-Akoko in Ondo State, Nigeria. Ten folktales were purposely selected from written sources while two were collected during performance. The performances of the folktales fostered a comprehensive understanding of the impact that the linguistic features laced with humour have on the audience. The data were subjected to critical reading using content analysis. The theoretical framework of this study was anchored in Henri Bergson’s theoretical work; Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of Comic (1923). The results showed that many African folktales manifest sterling linguistic devices laced with humour that embellish the narrative structure of the written folktales while enhancing the performative experience of the audience during the performance in Ipe-Akoko. The study concluded that folktales function as a means of galvanising and lubricating African languages and other verbal components whenever they seem to be inadequate

Inorganic Geochemistry of Coal from Patappa Village, Bone District, and Masenrengpulu Village, Barru District, South Sulawesi Province Using XRF Method

    Get PDF
The chemical composition of coal is almost the same as that of plant tissue, containing the main elements of elements C, H, O, N, S, and P. An in-depth study of coal inorganic compounds is needed because coal inorganic compounds are the primary variable in ash formation during coal combustion. This study uses the X-ray fluorescence method to reveal the differences and similarities in inorganic chemical composition contained in coal in Bone Regency and Barru Regency. Coal in Masenrengpulu Village has the Al2O3 compound as the most dominant compound, while coal in Patappa Village has the SiO2 compound as the most prevalent compound. The concentration of inorganic sulfide minerals in the village of Masenrengpulu was influenced by igneous rock intrusion and deposition processes. In contrast, the deposition process only affected the inorganic sulfide minerals of coal in Patappa village. The significant elements found in coal in the Masenrengpulu and Patappa Villages are Si, Al, Fe, S, Ca, K, and Ti. Coal inorganic sulfide minerals in Masenrengpulu Village with Patappa Village have high concentrations in the bottom channel of the coal seam and a low concentration in the middle channel and top of the seam. Coal inorganic sulfide minerals in Masenrengpulu Village and Patappa Village have high concentrations in the coal seam's lower channel and low concentrations in the middle and upper channels.
