TEXTUAL INTERPRETATION OF THE COWS OF BASHAN AND CRITICS OF AMOS IN AMOS 4: 1-3

    Get PDF
The book of Amos, chapter 4:1-3, illustrates Amos's strategic choice in rebuking the government officials who indulge in luxury. Amos compares these elites to the cows of Bashan. Through rhetorical critique of that passage, this article aims to analyze the motives why Amos deliberately uses the metaphor the cows of Bashan. Amos wants his criticism that he conveys to be right on target to his interlocutors. He recognized that his interlocutors were not ordinary people; they were part of the elite class accustomed to luxurious lifestyles. Taking advantage of their husbands' high positions, they enriched themselves while turning a deaf ear to the grievances of the common people. Therefore, this article believes that through the metaphor of the cows of Bashan and the hook punishment, Amos makes a sarcastic satire because it is seen as effective in touching upon the sensitivities of these government officials. Amos chose the metaphor of the cows of Bashan also because of the socio-geographical context that is very close to their lives. Through this sarcastic satire, Amos successfully conveyed his theological message cleverly: that God does not remain silent in reproaching anyone who disregards the marginalized and oppressed

CONVERTING AGRICULTURE FROM A CURSE TO A BLESSING CATHOLIC ORGANIC RICE FARMERS IN INDONESIA

    Get PDF
Since the 1960s, Indonesia has pursued Green Revolution routes that rely on agrochemical methods to increase rice yields. As soil quality declines and costs of artificial fertilizer and hybrid seeds rise, some farmers have adopted organic rice farming methods. Several studies of this trend have been published, but only a few have explored the role of religion in this gradual move to organic farming. This ethnographic study of eight Catholic farmers in Yogyakarta Special Region/Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY), Central Java Province, and East Nusa Tenggara Province/Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) reveals that while increasing costs of inputs are a factor in conversion, religious perspectives on food and the environment also played a role. The study utilizes the constructivism-interpretivism paradigm and the concept of 'Religion in everyday life' by Nancy Ammerman. The interview reveals that religion is present in faith in God(s), a sense of interconnectedness, a sense of purpose, emotion, spiritual narrative, embodiment, and virtues. Given the highly religious character of Indonesia, this pilot study indicates the need for further research on the role of religion in agricultural development, particularly in the move towards more ecological farming

    Get PDF
Conceptual metaphor plays a significant role in everyday communication as it is a fundamental aspect of the human mind and conceptualization. It reflects people’s ways of thinking in responding to a phenomenon or event. To describe how online media in  Indonesian report the COVID-19 pandemic metaphorically, the study would explain 1) the mapping of conceptual metaphors related to COVID-19, and 2) their cognitive functions or ways of thinking about COVID-19. This qualitative study analyzed metaphorical lexical units in three online newspapers in Bahasa Indonesia with local and national coverage: Kompas, Jawa Pos, and Kedaulatan Rakyat. The Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) was used in the data collection process and Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) was used to analyze the data. The study found that Indonesians are rich in lexical items as source domains to conceptualize things related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The prominent source domains, inter alia, are WARFARE, DESTRUCTIVE FORCE, COLOR SPECTRUM, and MOVEMENT. The conceptual metaphors illustrate how people feel, act, and think about COVID-19. The dominance of lexical items in WARFAFE and DESTRUCTIVE FORCE categories implies that the metaphors were used to raise people’s awareness that they were in a difficult situation and needed to fight the virus together.

    Get PDF
Previous literature reviews and bibliometric studies have paid much attention to the scientific outputs of Zoltán Dörnyei, a leading figure in the field of second language acquisition and education. However, little attention has been paid to his scholarly impact. This study aims to analyze all publications citing his 87 works in Scopus. Bibliometrix, a comprehensive bibliometric tool, was run to analyze 7,621 documents published in 1,970 sources by 9,226 authors of 2,652 institutions across 99 countries between 1991 and 2023. The analyses include the publication trend, research contributors, including authors, document elements including keywords, collaboration networks of research contributors, shared references, and frequently used keywords. Although most documents were written in English in the fields of social sciences as well as arts and humanities, his impact could be observed across other subject areas and languages. Further discussion elaborated on four major themes of the publications, including motivation, L2 motivational self-system, language learning, and positive psychology. This study could provide researchers and educators with valuable insights into understanding and improving language acquisition processes based on Dörnyei’s incalculable intellectual contribution. As this study focused on quantitative citation analysis, future research on how Dörnyei’s works were cited could provide deeper insights into his impact
