Water for all: embedding equity in drinking-water policies: policy brief
No full textvi, 20 p.Closing equity gaps in access to drinking-water is a prerequisite for health and dignity. Provision of equitable access contributes to livelihoods and to building resilient and healthy communities. However, this is an ongoing and complex challenge in the pan-European region, requiring cross-sectoral cooperation. To ensure targeted, evidence-driven action, a solid data foundation needs to be established, requiring enhancements to monitoring and surveillance with an equity focus. Investments in safe, resilient and affordable services and engaging communities are crucial next steps. The thematic focus on equitable access of the European Union Drinking Water Directive, the targets set by countries under the Protocol on Water and Health, and the universal call for realization of the human right to water provide a strong political foundation for national action. This policy brief highlights useful tools and best practices to support countries in their efforts to embed equity in drinking-water policies. It also outlines remaining challenges, and provides an overview of the status of equitable access in the region
