A system of pair sentential calculus that has a representation of the Liar sentence

    Get PDF
In this paper we will introduce a referential relation between pair-sentences similar to the identity connective in SCI. Here pair-sentence statements of the form (A,B) read as “A is referential to B”. Then by interpreting the pair-sentence (A,B) as a sequence of referential relation such that the referential recursive pattern A B0 B1 B2 . . .B0 B1 B2 . . .holds, we will formalize a pair sentential calculus and represent the behavior of Liar sentence. To formalize the pair sentential calculus, we firstly introduce the stage numbers i, j in which each of pair-sentence holds, i.e., (Ai,Bj) and which means a situation of A at a stage i is referential to the situation of B at a stage j. We also introduce a referential cycle number of (Ai,Bj) and by using of this cycle number, we may classify pair-sentences into two categories, that is, categorical and paradoxical. Then each Liar sentence has a referential cycle number of n such that n 2 and is paradoxical.departmental bulletin pape

PRODUCTION THROUGHPUT EVALUATION USING THE VASICEK MODEL

    Get PDF
The Vasicek model, which is used in mathematical finance, was adopted to evaluate the production throughput of a production flow system. The production throughput was assumed to behave as an average regression. The production consisting of asynchronous and synchronous processes was evaluated theoretically using the average regression. Three patterns, which combined asynchronous and synchronous methods involving nine workers and six stages each, were also tested. Both experiment and calculations gave almost the same production throughput data, thereby validating the mathematical model proposed in this study.journal articl

A Class of Feature Spaces and Violation of the Triangle Inequality

    Get PDF
A class of feature spaces that can violate the triangle inequality is proposed. The theory states that arbitrary N samples, in which all the distances between any pair of samples are given but their coordinates are unknown, can always assign the coordinates in the defined feature space after eigenvalue decomposition.departmental bulletin pape

Design and Implementation of an EFL Materials Evaluation Tool for Young Japanese Learners

    Get PDF
With MEXT initiative to implement English as a core subject at the 4th and 5th grade of Elementary school and devoting approximately 8 hours per month in principle for 3rd and 4th graders has meant that students are learning at an earlier age (MEXT, 2014). In recent years, English as a foreign language (EFL) instruction in Japanese kindergartens and nursery schools has increased annually (MEXT, 2011). As a natural progression the need for appropriate Syllabus design and the importance of suitable material selection for young learners (YL) cannot be overlooked particularly as these issues are viewed as it is instrumental in promoting learner motivation (Hughes, 2014). The present study investigated the design of a materials selection tool that may be used as an assessment tool for selection of potential commercial materials for the purpose of implementation in a Japanese Kindergarten setting for 5-6 year old EFL learners. The design, evaluation, and pilot test of a materials evaluation tool were provided as well as possible gaps in the evaluated material identified. In an effort to satisfy the criteria for the desired materials,a presentation of supplemental materials was provided. The tool was found to be and efficient but due to design lacking in space to provide more specific information that might be useful for material selection.departmental bulletin pape

An Analysis of Spoken Discourse of a Movie: Bend It Like Beckham

    Get PDF
This paper was written for the fourth year students at Niigata University of International and Information Studies who take the author’s seminar about sociolinguistics to show a model for a B.A. dissertation. This study has analyzed spoken discourse of a movie, Bend It Like Beckham. Two types of conversation were selected in the movie conducted among an Indian family. The talk has been investigated from the different cultural viewpoints suggested by Holliday (1994) and Hall (1977). The conversation has been analyzed with the use of the SPEAKING Model (Hymes, 1974) and two coding systems: IRF (Sinclair & Coulthard, 1975) and Speech Acts (Halliday, 1961). The findings demonstrate that one conversation shows communicative breakdown does not allow IRF to flow smoothly and speakers frequently use Expressive speech acts which can be emotional talk. In contrast, the other conversation shows smooth communication has clear patterns of IRF interaction. Additionally, speakers are aware of social norms in the context and use diplomatic communication skills. This shows they employ a mixture of speech acts which gives impression of logical and objective talk. Finally, it concludes that in order to achieve the purpose of conversation, a high level of communicative competence plays an important role.departmental bulletin pape

Analysis of Production Processes Using a Lead Time Function

    Get PDF
We consider that production cost is included in the internal or external factors introduced by outside supplier companies (hereafter called suppliers). In this study, we analyze the changes in the lead time under this circumstance. A production business generally receives input from outside companies. Therefore, we dynamically model the specific production equipment procured from the supplier. The model is theoretically evaluated on actual return rate data, which follow a log-normal probability distribution. Furthermore, we present the actual throughput data of a production flow process with high productivity (synchronous method) and in the absence of a production flow process (asynchronous method).journal articl

A Study on the Dripping Reduction of Soap Dispenser by Infrared Sensor

departmental bulletin pape
