Do Fences Reduce Fear of Crime

The Roadmap of Government Transformation Program 2010 reported that the sense of fear of crime among Malaysians is quite high which is 89 percent. So, the questions is, do they feel safe without fence? Therefore, this paper seeks on the neighborhood with no fence to identify the sense of safety and fear of crime (FOC) among residents. The result indicates that longer resident living in residential areas is significant with perceptions of crime (POC) in the neighborhood (p = 0.00). The more people go out at night is also significant with POC in the neighborhood (p = 0.012).
Mangrove Degradation: Issue and awareness
Get PDFMangroves in Malaysia reside coastlines and the largest areas of mangrove are in the Northern Sabah. They sheltered at the shores of the west coast. Over four decades, mangroves are recorded to be declining due to aquaculture practices implemented in Peninsular Malaysia. Public participation and their awareness are considered as critical components in conserving the mangrove areas. Thus, the research was conducted to discover residents' awareness towards this devastating issue. A questionnaire survey was employed to respondents in Kuala Selangor. In this regards, this research is to study the residents' awareness on the importance of mangrove areas
An Evaluation of a Nutritional Educational Proramme for Obese Children
Get PDFOverweightness and obesity is a problem that has been rising in the Malaysian suburban environment. This study is conducted to evaluate the healthy food behavior, attitudes, knowledge and healthy environment of obese school children aged 10-11 years old. Obese school children received the nutritional educational program (NEP) comprised of a video, a comic reading session and a food selection game. The intervention resulted in a significant increase for healthy food behaviour, attitude and knowledge. However, there is an only minimal impact for a healthy environment. Overall, the results indicate that the nutritional educational program has positive impact in preventing obesity
Community Participations in Comprehensive Planning of Amphawa District, Thailand
Get PDFThe aim of this article was to discuss community participations in comprehensive planning of Amphawa District, Thailand, which targeted for the year 2030. There were two objectives of the study: to discuss the effectiveness of community participations and to discuss the future land use plan. The planning methodology integrated several community participation activities into the traditional comprehensive planning process. The result of the study revealed that community participations helped reduce difficulties and save time. In terms of future land uses, several conservation related zones were designated to conserve local natural and cultural heritages and agricultural areas
Youth Place Attachment and Quality of Life Index in Public Housing
Get PDFThis study examines the quality of life (QoL) satisfaction through place attachment theory upon neighbourhood area among youth in Kuala Lumpur. The objectives are to test the impact of neighbourhood sense of place on QoL index. For place attachment, the environmental factors closest to the home of the residents exerted a greater influence than the more distal factor. These findings contribute to understanding the relationship between place attachment theory and quality of life among youth. The discussion also considers personal dimensions of place belonging and identifying associations amongst them as ways to explore youth quality of life in the PPH
Landscape Spatial Character: Students’ preferences on outdoor campus spaces
Get PDFThe landscape is important in spatial development for campus space. Fundamentally, planting composition generates a character of the outdoor space. It could offer an enormous influence on visual quality, student performance and quality of life. This paper investigated the preferences and usage of outdoor campus space provided by universities during students’ leisure time. The data were collected through structured interviews at Research Universities in Malaysia. The results showed a relationship between preferences for landscape setting and utilisation index. Hence, this study suggested, the planting design is substantial to generate the space character which stimulates the use of outdoor campus space
Quality of Vision of Presbyopic via Progressive Additional Lens (PALs)
Get PDFThe number of presbyopia with inadequate correction is increasing worldwide which surely decreased the visual satisfaction. A survey was conducted to study the level of vision satisfaction between the quality of vision and symptoms reported by progressive addition lens (PALs). Sixty questionnaires were mailed to the (PALs) wearers aged between 40 years and above from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Vision Care. The strongest correlation was between the quality of vision at intermediate viewing with total satisfaction on seeing grocery shelves and computer screen p<0.001. PALs wearers priority and needs should be considered in selecting the appropriate lens design for required tasks

This paper prepared to develop critical success factor for tree planting works in Malaysia. In this study, there were 225 Landscape Architect respondents successfully responded to the survey conducted. The outcome of this paper began with the assessment elements that had to be rated by respondents according to their general assumption on the critical level of each element. Finally, this research establishes a set of critical success factor of tree planting

The paper aims to discuss the place identity of Batu Pahat, the factors that contribute to the loss of the identity and the possible ways in reviving the place identity. The research was conducted through the reading of past documents and records, observation, and interview of the locals. Several factors contributed to the loss of place identity. Possible solutions in reviving the place identity were to upgrade the waterfront, revitalize the old buildings, and to include a textile center
Sustainability Factors and Performance
Get PDFA Transportation infrastructure projects often involve the considerable land use and huge resource that can cause serious impacts to the environment and social dislocation. Hence, implementation of sustainable factors is essential. This paper attempts (1) to review infrastructure project sustainability factor and performance, and (2) to propose a framework of relationship between the sustainability factors and performance for railway projects in Malaysia. The results from the literature show that sustainability factors and performance can be categorized under environment, economic, social, engineering/resource utilization and project management.
