The industry of the author and the wise skill of the publisher
have combined to make A History of the iPacific N.o'rthw/!'st an
attractive and worth while book that will surely receive a generous
measure of attention.
Montana in the M<I<king. By NEWTON CARL ABBOTT. (Billings:
Gazette Printing Company, 1931. Pp. 520.)
The author is Professor of Social Sciences in the Eastern Mon-
tana Normal School at Billings. His beautifully printed and elab-
orately illustrated book is intended for school use. Chancellor Mel-
vin A. Brannon, University of Montana, says in the introduction:
aMontana in the Making is a class room and laboratory story
of pioneers who came to the great Northwest in response to the
urge for adventure and for achievement due to the buoyant human
spirit within them. This laboratory and field study of Montana
history was carried on in various localities of the state and all kinds
of popular bulletins and general publications were drawn upon for
materials."
The text and arrangement of topics reveal this industry as well
as a dependable scholarship. One of the most helpful features is
a series of eight small maps or graphs showing the political develop-
ment of the Northwest from which the map of Montana emerges.
Other maps, well selected illustrations, topical questions and sug-
gested readings ~ombine in a way that should make the book a
delight to both teacher and student.
Two Warriors. By EDWARD LINCOLN SMITH. (Seattle: Frank
McCaffrey at his Dogwood Press, 1931. Pp. 47.)
The two essays "John Knox, Saint or Sinner" and "Oliver
Cromwell, His Place in History," were prepared by Rev. Edward
Lincoln Smith for the Monday Club. They were given exquisite
embodiment in this little book by Mr. Caffrey.

This is Bulletin 100 in the publications by the Bureau of Amer-
ican Ethnology. The text and the superb illustrations reveal a rich
harvest during the investigations conducted from May to September,

Empire Day, 1931. By R. A. HoEY, Minister of Education and R.
FLETCHER, Deputy Minister. (Winnipeg: Department of Edu-
cation, 1931. Pp.32.)
Each year this pamphlet is issued for the use of the Schools of
Manitoba in the celebration of Empire Day. This year it is dedicated
to Manitoba Indians. The information about tribes and customs is
attractively presented and the numerous illustrations are excellent.
Programs are suggested and a song, "Wawanesa" is given with the
musical score. It is a fine example of what might be done for other
Provinces or States.
A History of Minnesota. By WILLIAM WATTS FOLWELL. (Saint
Paul: Minnesota Historical Society, 1930. Pp. 575. $5.00.)
This is Volume IV of the set begun in 1921. The other vol-
umes were noted as they appeared. The author is held in high esteem
wherever known and his great work is now completed. The vol-
umes were supplied free to members of the Minnesota Historical
Society. Volume 1. is now scarce. A few copies are offered by the
Society at $8.00 each. Volumes II. and III. are $2.00 each.
The Oregon Trail and Some of Its Blazers. By MAUDE ApPLEGATE
RUCKER. (New York: Walter Neale, 1930. Pp.293. $2.50.)
The title of this volume is misleading. Instead of being named
The Oregon Trail it might more aptly have been styled The Apple-
gates of Oregon. As a convenient bringing together of tributes to
and reminiscences by the notable members of this pioneer Oregon
family, the book is a worthwhile addition to the literature of the
Pacific Northwest.
The first two chapters relating to the nan1e and the settlement
of Oregon are reprinted from Bancroft's History of Oregon. Next
is a brief chapter, mainly made 'up of quoted matter, entitled "The
Oregon Pioneers of 1843." Chapter IV is an appreciation of Jesse
Applegate, by Professor Joseph Schafer delivered as an address
before the Oregon Historical Society in December of 1911.

Professor William H. George, formerly of the Political Science
Department, University of Washington, has returned for the sum-
mer session. He is now Professor of Political Science and Dean of
the College of Liberal Arts, University of Hawaii.
Pacific Trade
The Fourth Biennial Conference of the Institute of Pacific
Relations will be held in Hangchow, China, October 21 to Novem-
ber 4, 1931.
Section I of a syllabus on "International Economic Relations
in the Pacific-Trade" has been prepared. It appears in the maga-
zine, Pacific Affairs for June, 1931, pages 516-522.
The opening sentence is typical: "The increase in the volume
and value of Pacific trade has been noticeable for a considerable
period; but in recent years it appears to have been considerably
accelerated."
Promotion for Doc;tor Buck -
Dr. Solon J. Buck, who has served as Superintendent of the
Minnesota Historical Society since 1914, has resigned to become
Superintendent of the Western Pennsylvania Historical Survey and
a Professor in the University of Pittsburgh. The Buhl Foundation
is making it possible to conduct an extensive survey of Western
Pennsylvania history. Doctor Buck will begin his work in that new
field on September 1st.
Scrap Book'S of Austin Mires
Ausin Mires, of Ellensburg, is one of the three or four sur-
viving members of the Washington Constitutional Convention of
1889. For that reason and because of his interesting personality,
he is one of the outstanding pioneers now living. He has written
much in prose and verse. He has also served future generations by
preparing and saving many scrap books. These he has classified
and labelled:-three each on Washington and Oregon, four on
makers of American history, two on people and events; Lincoln,
Washington, Grant and Roosevelt each have separate books; also
books are devoted to such topics as Declaration of Independence and
the Constitution, the Republican Party and articles of his own,
mostly eulogies. He has eight volumes called miscellaneous and
three volumes of poems. He has kept a daily diary since February
11, 1875.

The bronze tablet, four feet tall and three feet wide, was
culptured b Mr. Je ie . Lincoln of Great Falls and the boulder
a fumi hed by George Grover of the same city. The full-length
figure of Chief J 0 eph and Colonel Miles are clothed in the cos-
tume of 1877. At the upper rim of the plaque are Chief Joseph's
memorable words: HFrom where the Sun now stands, I will fight
no more forever." .
At the lower edge are these wQrds: ."October 5, 1877. Sur-
render of Chief Joseph to Cnolonel elson A. Miles. To the valor
and d votion of those, both red and white, who struggled here.

Revival of Interest in H eceta
The Sunday Oregonian for September 20, 1931, contains a
ar full illustrated article entitled "Heceta's Chart Ends Long
Di pute." The article is by J. eilson Barry of Portland, Oregon,
ho ha de oted much study and research to its preparation.
A cop of the chart made by Captain Bruno Heceta in 1775

Barry obtained a photostat of that copy and made it the base of his
illu tration , adding the nited States Coast and Geodetic charts
and an ten ive air view photograph by the Brubaker Aerial

Honoring Pioneers of Southwest ~Vashington
At the annual picnic of the outhwest Wa hington Pioneer'
Association in August, 1931, Historian . B. Coffman gave hi
customary review including the biographies of three out tanding
pioneers who had passed away during the year. Selection for
such honors are made annually by the Association, the choice being
limited to tho e who were pioneers when the Territory of Wa h-
ington was organized in 1853. Those included in this year's honors
were as follows :
"Anna Rachel Grey Urquhart, wife of William Muir Urqu-
hart, pioneer merchant of Chehalis.
"Christopher Columbus Simmons, a son of that earliest of
Western Washington American home-seekers, Michael Troutman
Simmons.
"William Mills, son of Elkanah and Elvina V. Mills, brother
of Mary Jane Brown, queen-mother of outhwest Washington
pioneers."
The Chehalis Bee-Nugget for August 21 and 28 carried 'Ir.
Coffman's report in full. Those issue are well worth aving for
their historic values.

Revival of Interest in Heceta

natural resources of that section; who as major in 1902 made a
preliminary urvey of the country along the rout of the proposed
Copper River Railway in Alaska; and who has been closely identi-
fied with the development of the region in which this mountain
i located."
Mount Lundin in eastern King County, between Snoqualmie
Mountain and Red Mountain, Snoqualmie National Forest, is named
"in honor of the late John Lundin, who was formerly district ranger
in charge of the region in which this mountain is located."
Report Number 10, for the meeting of October 7, 1931, records
seventeen decisions for Alaska, four for Oregon, one for 1VIontana
and six for Wyoming. There is no decision relating to Washing-
ton geography but one of the Oregon decisions deserves mention
here:
Captain Cook Point, about one mile south of Cape Perpetua
on the Oregon coast. "Narne proposed by the Oregon Geographic
Board in honor of Capt. James Cook of the Royal Navy, who
visited this region in March, 1778, and who was the first English-
man, of whom we have detailed knowledge to visit the coast of
Oregon."
Report Number 11, November 4, 1931, is a brief one. It in-
cludes two Washington decisions:
Bainbridge Island, named in 1841 by the Wilkes Expedition
after Captain William Bainbridge, American naval hero in the war
of 1812. There seems little reason for this decision since the name
ha been in constant use! for ninety years.
Treasure I land, Kitsap County, "about 114 yards long, on
north side of and 900 yards inside entrance of a small bay, indentino-
north end of Bainbridge Island."

Bolton of the University of California to erve a Pre ident during

The Pacific Coast Branch's twenty-seventh annual meeting at
Berkeley, California, had on its programs two representatives from
Oregon and two from Washington as follows: "Hi. tory and the
Fall of Rome," by Professor Reginald F. Arragon of Reed College;
"The Reputation of James Anthony Froude," by Profe sor Andrew
Pi h of the University of Oregon; " Cromwell and the nabapti ts
During 1653," by Professor C. Eden Quainton of the Univer ity
of Washington; and "Some Aspects of the Development of Party
Life in British Columbia," by Mi Edith Dobie of the niver ity
of Washington. The President for 1931 was Professor Dan E.
Clark of the niversity of Oregon.
The American Scholar
Phi Beta Kappa is supplanting its former publication by an
enlarged and more inclusive quarterly. The name is from the
title of Ralph Waldo Emerson's famous address "The American
Scholar," delivered before the Harvard chapter. The preliminary
announcements reveal the intere t in and backing of the new
enterpri e by some of the best known and most successful American
scholars of the present day. It is planned to serve general reader
a well as members of Phi Beta Kappa. The cost i placed at two
dollar a year and the addres is 145 We t 55th treet, ew York
City.

The work is adequately illustrated with attractive photographs
of the rock-carvings tudied. Beginning in 1905, Mr. Reagan wa
for ome years in charge of the Quillayute Indian Re ervation in
the tate of Washington. He is now located at Ouray, Utah.

\ 'hich are palpable error. For example, it was claimed that the

The official journals how that the ships went outh for each of the
~;inter of 1792, 1793 and 1794 the Discovery arriving home in
eptember, 1795.
But the hip did explore Chatham trait and other la kan
~;ater and hores in the ummer of 1793 and 1794. Captain
T ancouver named Chatham Strait after Lord Chatham for whom
hi maller hip was also named. They left tho e northern shores
from what they called Port Conclusion on the evening of Friday
August 22, 1794.

Recognizing the importance of the 1792 discoveries by the
