    Metapors and Memes; Tools for the engagement students in diverse settings

    This presentation will explore the use of simple experiential structured activities to engage students with each other, with course content and with learning reflection. Metaphors and memes are objects and ideas that can be used as ice-breakers but also as tools for both the introduction of topics, the exploration of ideas, meta cognitive reflection as well as assessment and evaluation of learning. They are effective in large group, small group and paired discussions are introvert friendly and inherently about sharing many voices and encouraging diversity of perspective. This workshop will explore a number of uses of these tools by engaging participants in a variety of different applications

    Pick a topic, any topic!: Using improvisational comedy techniques to bulwark feminist pedagogy

    In 2017-18, I made a concerted effort to incorporate feminist pedagogy more fully into my instructional practices, paying particular attention to decentering my own authority, building knowledge collaboratively, and empowering students’ diverse ways of knowing. Because most of my information literacy instruction takes place in a required Introduction to University Writing course, every class incorporates a mix of domestic and international students, each with unique research interests and academic goals but little to no research background. To make the lesson work, to find that delicate balance between control and letting go, I found myself delving into my own history, not as a teacher, librarian, or researcher, but as a member of my high school improv troupe. By Establishing the Scene, Making Statements, Embracing the Unexpected, and Saying “Yes, AND…,” I have worked towards a format that empowers student knowledge and processes while still encouraging collaborative learning towards a shared goal of improved library research skills. Participants at this session will come away with an introduction to some of the basic goals and tenets of feminist pedagogy, an overview of the particular challenges of applying these tenets to library instruction, and some practical tips to mitigating these challenges by using improvisational comedy techniques. While most TPC participants will likely not be leading information literacy or library instruction themselves, many will have incorporated it into their classes; additionally, many of the tips for reconciling improv comedy and feminist pedagogy will be transferable across many types of instruction

    Quantification of Ketone Bodies in Saliva using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

    Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a growing epidemic in today’s world. A complication associated with this disease is diabetic ketoacidosis, and if left untreated it can result in a coma or death. There are commercial methods to analyze ketone concentrations through urine and blood, but both have their respective flaws. Saliva consists mostly of water, but also contains hormones and other metabolites. Using saliva as a diagnostic model is slowly gaining popularity, but there is very little research on the quantification of ketone bodies in saliva. Therefore, the experiment looks to quantify the amount of acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate in saliva, urine, and blood in participants who are in ketosis, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Participants were recruited, and samples of their blood, urine, and saliva were received before and after completing a 4-day ketogenic diet. All samples were acidified, and the matrices were evaporated. The samples were spiked with both ketone bodies, derivatized using BSTFA + 1% TMCS at 80°C for 30 minutes, and the headspace was analyzed. The expected results include blood and urine having the highest concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate, respectively, and saliva having more beta-hydroxybutyrate than acetoacetate, but less than the amount seen in blood. This is because saliva and plasma are isotonic. Future work will look at how the concentration of ketone bodies changes over time to see how the ketone bodies are distributed across the body

    Pretrial Custody Judgments of Guilt, Crime Seriousness, and Fairness of Treatment

    The bail system might have unintended prejudicial effects on those without the economic resources to post bail. The purpose of the present study is to understand if jury members’ decisions of guilt or innocence, crime seriousness, and treatment fairness are influenced by pretrial status of the accused. Two hundred-twenty undergraduate psychology students read a short vignette about a crime and pretrial experience differed across four conditions: two pretrial detention, no detention, and no information. We manipulated the two pretrial detention conditions according to the socioeconomic status of the accused. Participants then answered a questionnaire that assessed pretrial detention judgments. We hypothesized that individuals described in the pretrial detention conditions would be perceived as more likely to be guilty, that the crime they were accused of would be perceived as more serious, and that their pretrial treatment would be perceived as fairer compared to participants in the no pretrial detention and control conditions. Results showed a significant effect of pretrial custody on treatment fairness, F(3, 183) = 5.868, p = 0.001. We can conclude that judgments of treatment fairness vary between individuals who are detained compared to not detained during their pretrial period. Little variance between the pretrial detention conditions across all dependent variables demonstrated that the monetary value of the bail system may not have a strong effect on juror judgments, particularly among judgments of guilt and crime seriousness. To help distinguish where jury biases lie, future research should focus on what aspects of socioeconomic status affect judgments of treatment fairness

    Anti-\u3ci\u3ePseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd)\u3c/i\u3e Activities from Canadian Western Bat Wings

    White-nose syndrome, an infectious fungal illness in bats caused by the psychrophilic Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), has decimated North American hibernating bat populations at an unprecedented rate. The fungus establishes on the surface of bats during their hibernation cycle, resulting in their premature arousal from torpour and depletion of vital fat stores required for hibernation. As some species of bacteria have an antagonistic relationship with fungi, the elimination of Pd through the native microbiota of bats may serve as a non-invasive prevention method that limits the disruption of hibernacula ecosystems. In this study, bacteria found on batwings were isolated and screened for anti-Pd activity. These bacteria could be used to develop a probiotic powder to be placed in hibernacula and on bat colonies in hope to help prevent bats from WNS. Batwing swabs were obtained from captured bats between the summer of 2016 and the summer of 2018. The swabs were plated on blood agar, nutrient agar (NA), Reasoner’s 2A (R2A) agar, potato dextrose agar (PDA), and Wallerstein Laboratory (WL) agar. Culturable bacteria were re-streaked and incubated at 25-30°C for 24-48 hours to obtain pure cultures. Using the agar diffusion method, we screened the anti-Pd activity for our isolates on Sabouraud Dextrose agar (SDA) at 14°C for 28 days. Among the 585 bacterial isolates tested, five showed full inhibition and 34 showed partial inhibition. The anti-Pd bacterial strains were isolated from 8 different bat species across 11 locations in BC and Alberta. The identities of these anti-Pd bacteria are being determined

    SESSION 3.1: An Examination of Service Learning, Trades and Tech Practicum for BC Students: Installation of Solar Panels in Low-Income Homes in Oaxaca, Mexico

    A British Columbia School of Trades and Technology has organized yearly International Practicums for their Electrical Foundation students in Oaxaca, Mexico, since 2012. Students and instructors have traveled each time from BC to a small rural village that lies outside the electricity grid in Oaxaca, in order to install solar panels each trip in 8 to 10 low-income homes. Each home has received a charge controller, a storage battery and a few lights. This paper will explore the impact of this experiential learning on students from BC, who participated in these practicums as well as on the people that benefited from the solar panel installations in the Oaxacan small villages. I use a qualitative exploratory approach. Data has been collected through interviews with instructors, BC students, and community members in Mexico. Data has also been collected from reflective essays by the students. There have been some anecdotal reports from students whose experience in these practicum trips has transformed the way they perceive themselves, the world, and the importance of their own work in these modest homes. This paper will explore the intersections of experience, culture, and place in students from BC, involved in this transformative experiential service learning who travel to Oaxaca. It also will examine the impact these practicum trips have had for the people benefited by these installations in their modest homes in Oaxaca

    This paper explores indigenous fishers’ participation in the Fraser River Fishermen’s strike of 1893 as a means to protest settler colonialism and the restriction of their fishing rights. It argues that indigenizing and decolonizing North American labour history entails more than just including indigenous workers in the picture – it entails reckoning with settler colonialism and how it shaped the industries in which indigenous workers made a living and how they resisted capitalist and state encroachment

    SESSION 3.1: Enforcing an Arbitrary Boundary: Hunting, Trapping, and the BC-Yukon Border

    In 1925, BC’s government issued regulations requiring the registration of traplines within the province. North of the BC-Yukon Territory border, the territorial government sought temporal rather than spatial means to conserve furbearers by enforcing closed seasons on certain animals. This situation meant that two contiguous jurisdictions which shared a largely arbitrary border, were in a position where they were enforcing divergent wildlife conservation policies. Exacerbating the situation, this borderland was remote, rendering it difficult for government agents to enforce laws. Weather it was furs, meat, or trophies to adorn the walls of southern sport hunters, wildlife in the Yukon-BC borderland was important economically and for the subsistence of the local population, Indigenous and non-Indigenous. Since the implementation of regulations concerning wildlife conservation often had repercussions for individuals living beyond the boundaries of their respective jurisdictions, this paper examines the ways in which both the BC and Yukon governmental administrations affected hunting and trapping activities in neighbouring jurisdictions. The BC-Yukon border is an arbitrary boundary following the sixtieth parallel North. This boundary cut across bioregions and the cultural geographies of the Indigenous peoples who inhabited these borderlands. Similarly, White hunters found it easy to cross the border for hunting and trapping purposes, especially as aviation became increasingly common during the 1930s. While previous studies have typically been confined within Euro-Canadian political boundaries, this paper considers how these different types of boundaries influenced the extent to which wildlife conservation affected hunters and trappers in adjacent regions
