    Insights from the Use of OERs in Education Research Methods Course

    The use of OERs reduces educational costs for students. Beyond this financial benefit, OERs have the potential to facilitate students\u27 learning by allowing for the incorporation of multi-modal (e.g., videos, audios) learning tools as well as other interactive features (e.g., application activities to test learning with immediate feedback). For teachers, it facilitates keeping course material current by easily adding, removing and modifying content. OERs afford the possibility of building on material currently available through common creative license. This presentation will report on preliminary insights from the adoption of OERs in two M.Ed. education research methods courses. One of the courses is delivered on campus and the other online. The perspectives of M.Ed. students taking these courses and faculty teaching them will be examined to identify how these resources facilitate learning and their overall quality across several dimensions (e.g., visual appeal, clarity, interactivity, etc.)

    Panel Proposal for BC Studies Conference 2019 (May 2-4) Thompson Rivers University “Intersections: Peoples and Places in British Columbia” Title: “The Anthony Martin BC Penitentiary Collection at TRU: Disseminating the Archive” Panelists: Jennifer Murphy, TRU, SSWHS; Mary Hemmings, TRU Law Librarian; P. J. Murphy, Dept. of English, TRU. This panel is a sequel to “Relocating the Martin BC Penitentiary Archive at the Old Courthouse in Kamloops”, BC Studies Conference, May 3, 2013, Douglas College, New Westminster, “Transforming British Columbia”. This session was well attended and generated a lot of interest among archivists, curators, and local historians. If, as Michel Foucault argued, our institutional structures form a “carceral net”, then prison as a key intersectional point in that network can tell us a great deal about ourselves, our convictions, and our attitudes towards marginalized peoples. This panel will focus on major developments in networking the Archive since the earlier presentation in 2013. Foremost among these is the establishment of a designated Archival Room in the TRU law library. Our panel could, indeed, be held there; in addition to archival holdings, a number of curated exhibitions and various art works are on display. Jennifer Murphy will discuss the Catalogue for the Collection that she compiled with curator, Kristina Bradshaw. Mary Hemmings will discuss how the website for the Collection has been made available to TRUSpace thousands of vintage photographic images et al. P. J. Murphy will raise a number of possibilities for scholarly research on this Archive of provincial and national importance

    How to herd cats to write an OER textbook

    In June 2018 a new dawn appeared for the Career and Experiential Learning Department as we received an OER grant to write a department textbook. Bright eyed and eager to start, our ideas hit the ground running in a variety of directions. Determined to find the right path, we planned a 2 day writing retreat and miraculously had 8 authors and 3 facilitators attend. This presentation covers best practices for retreats and outcomes aligned with writing an OER textbook with multiple authors and editors. We’ll cover the dirty details on finding focus, retreat activities, setting timelines/outcomes, and herding cats while achieving a common goal

    Analysis of Feather Colouration in American Redstarts Using Tetrahedral Colour Space Models

    The dichromatic colouration displayed in many bird species suggests a relationship between colouration and sexual preference, particularly in species that display bold male colouration and exhibit female preference for potential mates. However, research on bird colouration is complicated by avian vision traits; while humans possess trichromatic colour vision, most avian species possess tetrachromatic vision. The additional functioning cone found in avian eyes allows them to see a broader range of light wavelengths, including colours in the UV range, thus potentially changing how colours are viewed by birds compared to humans. This study will attempt to compare two methods used for analyzing data on feather colouration obtained through colour reflection spectrometry: principal component analysis (PCA) (using brightness, hue, and chroma as three colour variables), and tetrahedral colour space models using pavo, a package designed for R software that allows for spectral colour data analysis. Feathers from American Redstarts will be analyzed through reflection spectrometry, and the resulting data will be analyzed using principal component analysis and tetrahedral colour space models; the results can eventually be compared with paternity data obtained through DNA analysis

    Theoretical Study of the Iron Complexes with Lipoic and Dihydrolipoic Acids

    Following a recent study of the secondary antioxidant capacity of the deprotonated forms of lipoic and dihydrolipoic acids through their formation of complexes with copper (Castañeda-Arriaga, Alvarez-Idaboy, Mora-Diez, 2016), the present study focuses on the complexes that these species can form with iron. To this effect, the relative stability of the various Fe (III) complexes considered will be studied at the M06-2X/6-31++G(d, p) level of theory combined with the SMD (Solvation Model based on Density) continuum in water under physiological pH conditions. We aim to identify the most thermodynamically stable complex and to explore its antioxidant capacity. These complexes are said to have antioxidant capacity if, by forming a complex with Fe (III), they can slow down the initial step (the iron-catalyzed Haber-Weiss reaction) of the reaction sequence shown below and reduce the potential damage caused by •OH radical formation in the second step (the Fenton reaction).     Introduction to Community Service-Learning (SRCL 1000)

    Introduction to Community Service-Learning is a general elective open to first to fourth year international and domestic students from a variety of disciplines across campus. Every semester each student volunteers at one of 30 local not-for-profit organizations for a full semester. Students are required to complete 24 hours of service as part of their course work. In this poster session, 10 not-for-profit organizations will be represented by 18 SRCL 1000 students. They will demonstrate personal reflections on their service experiences, how their experiences connect to the course work and their organizations, and what they will take back to their own communities after the course is over

    Synthesis of New Catalysts for C-O Alkoxy Activation Towards Green Diesel Production

    New complexes were synthesized using a novel dimethylphenyl-salicylaldiminato ligand and various Co(II) ,Co(III), and Ni(II) sources. The Schiff base ligand 2-{(E)-[(2,5-Dimethylphenyl) imino] methyl} phenol was synthesized (77% yield) and characterized by 1H NMR and 13C spectroscopy. The reaction of CoCl2.6H2O with two equivalents of ligand 2-{(E)-[(2,5-Dimethylphenyl) imino] methyl} phenol afforded an intensely green colored compound (yield 51%), this was characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The reaction of Ni(OAc)₂·4 H₂O with two equivalents of ligand yielded a dull dark green colored compound (yield 61%). We were unable to fully characterize this complex by NMR spectroscopy as it is paramagnetic. Microwave assisted catalytic studies have been researched into the alkoxy bond cleavage of triglycerides, with no characterizable results
