    Effects of Waste Generation on the Load Capacity Factor: A Novel Waste Management Assessment for OECD Countries

    The increase in global waste generation is an important issue directly addressed in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-12 and OECD countries produce large amounts of waste. In this context, the study examines the influence of waste generated and recycled on the load capacity factor (biocapacity/ecological footprint) in 28 OECD countries from 2000 to 2021 using novel panel data approaches. The study employs augmented mean group and novel half-panel jackknife estimation approaches within the Load Capacity Curve (LCC) hypothesis and confirms the LCC for OECD nations. In addition, the long-term prediction results illustrate that waste generation increases environmental destruction, while waste recycled supports the increase in the load capacity factor. The study recommends policymakers in OECD countries to support economic growth and increase investment in waste recycling technologies to achieve SDG-12

    Linking green fiscal policy, energy, economic growth, population dynamics, and environmental degradation: Empirical evidence from Germany

    Green fiscal policy instruments have been considered among the most effective against climate change and environmental conservation. However, there is limited knowledge of whether green fiscal policy instruments create the desired results. The primary objective of this research is to examine the impact of green fiscal policies in achieving environmental sustainability for the period from 1995 to 2020. To this end, Germany is utilized as a research sample, which commonly practices fiscal instruments to internalize negative economic development externalities. Besides, various control variables, including energy consumption, energy innovations, economic growth, and population density, are incorporated into the empirical model. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag approach is used as the baseline estimation method, while Fully Modified Least Squares and Canonical Regression methods are used for robustness check. The empirical outcomes show that (i) environmental taxes do not serve as an effective green fiscal policy tool, (ii) energy use exacerbates environmental pollution, (iii) economic growth and population density reduce environmental pollution, (iv) the impact of energy innovations on environmental pollution is controversial. Therefore, policymakers in Germany should not rely on environmental taxes as a green fiscal policy tool for combating climate change

    Metformin represses the carcinogenesis potentially induced by 50 Hz magnetic fields in aged mouse fibroblasts via inhibition of NF-kB

    Aging is a risk factor for various human disorders, including cancer. Current literature advocates that the primary principles of aging depend on the endogenous stress-induced DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species 50 Hz low-frequency magnetic field was suggested to induce DNA damage and chromosomal instability. NF-kB, activated by DNA damage, is upregulated in age-related cancers and inhibition of NF-kB results in aging-related delayed pathologies. Metformin (Met), an NF-kB inhibitor, significantly reduces both NF-kB activation and expression in aging and cancer. This in vitro study, therefore, was set out to assess the effects of 5mT MF in 50 Hz frequency and Met treatment on the viability and proliferation of aged mouse NIH/3T3 fibroblasts and expression of RELA/p65, matrix metalloproteinases MMP2 and MMP9, and E-cadherin (CDH1) genes. The trypan blue exclusion assay was used to determine cell viability and the BrdU incorporation assay to determine cell proliferation. The MMP-2/9 protein analysis was carried out by immunocytochemistry, NF-kB activity by ELISA and the expressions of targeted genes by qRT-PCR methods. Four doses of Met (500 uM, 1 mM, 2 mM and 10 mM) suppressed both the proliferation and viability of fibroblasts exposed to the MF in a dose-dependent pattern, and the peak inhibition was recorded at the 10 mM dose. Met reduced the expression of NF-kB, and MMP2/9, elevated CDH1 expression and suppressed NF-kB activity. These findings suggest that Met treatment suppresses the carcinogenic potential of 50 Hz MFs in aged mouse fibroblasts, possibly through modulation of NF-kB activation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition modulation

    Effect of Political Stability, Geopolitical Risk and R&D Investments on Environmental Sustainability: Evidence from European Countries by Novel Quantile Models

    This research investigates the effect of political stability and geopolitical risk on environmental sustainability (ES) by considering R&D investments in nuclear and renewable energy. Considering the high political stability and recent energy crisis and increasing geopolitical risk, the study focuses on three leading European countries. We use the load capacity factor, include data between 1985/1 and 2020/12, and apply quantile on quantile regression (QQ), Granger causality in quantiles (GQ), and quantile regression (QR) models. The study finds that in higher quantiles (i) increasing political stability stimulates the ES in Sweden and the United Kingdom; (ii) increasing geopolitical risk supports the ES in France; (iii) R&D investments increase the ES in all the countries; (iv) there are generally causal effects from the explanatory variables to the ES except some quantiles (0.45–0.50) in all the countries; (v) the power effects of the variables differ according to countries, quantiles and variables
