Evaluation of bone change in smokers and ex-smokers using fractal analysis and lacunarity analysis
Objective: It is known that smoking causes many diseases such as oral and nasopharyngeal cancers, cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis. With fractal analysis (FA), changes in trabecular bone can be detected. The cavities in the bone can also be evaluated with the lacunarity analysis (LA). In the light of this information, the aim of this study is to investigate how the duration of smoking and the duration of smoking cessation affect bone change in the mandible using FA and LA. Methods: Panoramic radiographs (PR) of 140 patients were grouped according to the duration of smoking and the duration of smoking cessation. The changes in the mandibular bone were evaluated with both FA and LA, and the results were compared with the control group who never smoked. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation analysis was used in the analysis. Results: The smokers’ FA value was significantly lower than the control group and the ex-smokers group. The smokers’ LA value was significantly higher than the control and ex-smokers’ group. The ex-smokers’ FA value was significantly lower than the control group. Both FA and LA values did not differ significantly between the genders. No significant correlation was observed between both FA and LA values and age. Conclusions: FA values were lower and LA values were higher in smokers. It is thought that in smokers, the trabeculation in the bone decreases and accordingly the intraosseous spaces increase, and the duration of smoking and quitting also affects the internal structure of the bone. PR can be used to evaluate bone structure with FA and LA analysis

Evaluating the influence of democracy, financial development, and fishery product consumption on fishing grounds: A case study for Malaysia
Enhancing environmental sustainability in all dimensions, including marine life, is an important task for all stakeholders. The Sustainable Development Goal-14 aims to protect marine life and reduce ecological pollution in marine ecosystems. In this regard, this study aims to examine the influence fishery product consumption, economic growth, democracy, and financial development on fishing footprint in Malaysia. For this purpose, three different models are employed under the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework from 1961 to 2018. The empirical results can be summarized as follows: (i) The EKC is not valid for Malaysia's fishing footprint (ii) Fishery product consumption and economic growth increase the fishing footprint, while population and financial development reduces pollution in fishing grounds (iv) Democracy has no impact on fishing footprint. Based on the research findings, the Malaysian government is recommended to promote green economic regulations for fisheries, environmental financing, and clean fishery products in order to mitigate the fishing footprint
Treatment of Pyogenic Granuloma in the Edentulous Mouth
INTRODUCTIONPyogenic granuloma is a benign and reactive inflammatory tumor-like lesion of the skin and mucous membranes.CASE DESCRIPTIONA 58-year-old male patient with edentulous maxilla and mandibula was referred to Mustafa Kemal University (MKU) Dentistry Faculty, Periodontology Department from the Prosthodontics Department. He complained that he had not been able to use his prosthesis for 1 year due to swelling in his mandibular area. In intraoral examination, there was localized sessile, hyperaemic, and partially necrotic gingival enlargement in the right anterior region and vestibule site of the mandibula. Radiographic examination revealed that the massive mass affected the alveolar bone. The surgical excision was performed, and the excised mass sizes were 20x20 mm. The bone tissue, under the mass, had a spongious structure, irregular surface, and a torus-like growth towards the buccal side. The bone mass excision, whose sizes were 10x5 mm, was made by piezosurgery. The excised biopsy masses were sent for pathological evaluation. Antibiotic (Amoxicillin, 1000 mg, 2x1, 7 days) Chlorhexidine mouthwash (Klorhex, 0,12%, 2x1, 14 days) was prescribed.Pathological evaluation reported that the excised mass was pyogenic granuloma. The recovery process was uneventful. After 3 months of follow-up, the new prostheses of patients were placed.DISCUSSIONPyogenic granuloma can occur in the edentulous mouth. The mass grew to a large size and caused changes in the underlying bone, for reasons such as prosthesis irritation and trauma.CONCLUSION/CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCESurgical excisions of the gingival enlargement and the underlying affected bone mass are successful techniques in the treatment of pyogenic granuloma.</div
GÖĞÜS AĞRISI ŞİKÂYETİ İLE ÇOCUK KARDİYOLOJİ POLİKLİNİĞİNE BAŞVURAN HASTALARIN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ
Türkiye’de Su Altı Teknolojisi Programının Profil Analizi
Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’de ön lisans düzeyinde öğrenci kabul eden Su Altı Teknolojisi Programı’nın profil analizini ortaya koymaktır. Bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman analizi uygulanmış, Türkiye’deki yükseköğretim kurumlarında yer alan ön lisans Motorlu Araçlar ve Ulaştırma Teknolojisi Bölümü, Su Altı Teknolojisi programında eğitim öğretim veren üniversitelerin web sayfaları ve resmi kurum sayfaları taranarak veriler elde edilmiştir. Türkiye’de Su Altı Teknolojisi programı bulunan 12 üniversitede toplam 46 öğretim elemanı yer alırken 19 Öğretim elemanı 1.Sınıf Dalgıç yeterliliğine sahiptir. Ulaştırma ve Altyapı Bakanlığı Bölge Liman Başkanlığından alınan bilgiye göre akredite edilmiş 8 program, akredite edilmemiş 3 program ve akredite süreci devam eden 1 program olduğu ifade edilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmada programın mevcut durumu ortaya çıkarılmış, programın geleceğine yönelik planlama ve yatırım yapılması sırasında elde edilen verilerin yol gösterici olacağı düşünülmektedir.</p
