    Effect of castration at different ages on growth and carcass characteristics of Kilis goats: Physicochemical changes and fatty acid profile of meat

    Aim of study: In this study, the effects of castration at different months of age on carcass and meat characteristics in goats reared under semi-extensive prolonged fattening conditions were investigated. Area of study: The experiment was conducted in the Yayladag & imath; district of Hatay province, Turkiye. Material and methods: The experiment was conducted with 48 male goats from the Kilis goat breed randomly allocated to 4 groups of 12 individuals each. Intact goats (uncastrated goats) functioned as the control group. Each of the other 3 groups was castrated using burdizzo forceps at the 4(th), 6(th), and 8(th) months after birth. During the experiment, all goats were exposed to the same management and feeding conditions. The effects of castration age on growth, carcass and slaughter parameters, as well as the muscle characteristics of the Longissimus thoracis, Semitendinosus, Psoas major, Triceps brachii, and Vastus lateralis were investigated. Main results: At the end of the fattening period, castration at 4-months age increased the weight of muscle tissue (P <0.05) and fat deposition (P <0.001). Additionally, an increase in intramuscular fat and tenderness of the meat, and a decrease in redness and cooking loss were observed with castration at 6-months age (P <0.05). Despite the increase in adiposity with early castration, the oleic acid and the ratio of unsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids (UFA:SFA), hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic index (h/H) and Delta(9) desaturase index of the meat tended to increase as the castration age decreased. In conclusion, the most appropriate castration age is at 6-months in terms of growth performance and at 4-and/or 6-months in terms of meat quality. Research highlights: Castration of goats at the correct age plays a crucial role in managing herd dynamics, enhancing meat quality, improving efficiency, and meeting market demands in goat farming

    Volumetric changes in free gingival graft and gingival unit graft treatments evaluated using an indirect digital method

    Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical one-dimensional changes such as root surface coverage, decrease seen in the amount of gingival recession and keratinised gingival width (KGW) obtained throughout a 6-month follow-up period following the treatment of Cairo class II gingival recession with free gingival graft (FGG) and gingival unit graft (GUG). Three-dimensional changes in gingival volume and thickness were also compared digitally using an indirect method. Methods: A total of 20 patients with localised Cairo class II gingival recession were randomly separated into two groups; 10 patients were treated with FGG and 10 patients treated with GUG. Preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively, the initial position of the gingiva and KGW were recorded for all the patients and plaster models were formed from the obtained impressions with the traditional method. The plaster models were transferred to a digital environment by scanning with a model scanner. Using a software program, changes in gingival papillary height and gingival volume and thickness were compared between the groups and according to the baseline values from The Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files obtained. Results: Compared to the baseline values, a significant increase was determined in the KGW, and a significant decrease in pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and gingiva recession depth in all the groups (p0.05). Conclusion: The study results showed that GUG treatment for Cairo class II localised gingival recession is an effective method in respect of increasing gingiva volume and thickness, increasing KGW, coverage of the root surface, and forming tissue contours that allow the patient to easily maintain oral hygiene. However, there was not seen to be any adventage of GUG and FGG over each other

    Effects of melatonin implants on uterine inflammation and ovarian progesterone receptor expression in female cats: A histopathological and molecular analysis

    This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological and molecular effects of subcutaneous melatonin implants on the reproductive organs of female cats. Twenty cats were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (Cont), which underwent ovariohysterectomy without prior treatment, and a melatonin-treated group (Mel), which received 18 mg melatonin implants subcutaneously in the interscapular region before ovariohysterectomy. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses of uterine tissues were performed, along with quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot to assess inflammatory markers and progesterone receptor expression. Histopathological findings revealed normal uterine structures in most control cats, with mild inflammation observed in a few cases. In contrast, melatonin-treated cats exhibited varying degrees of uterine inflammation, ranging from mild to severe. Immunohistochemical analysis showed elevated IL-1β expression in the treated group compared to controls. Molecular analysis revealed significant upregulation of IL-6, TNF-α, NF-kB, IFN-γ, ICAM-1, and iNOS in uterine tissues of the treated group (p < 0.05). Western blot analysis confirmed increased IL-6, TNF-α, NF-kB, IFN-γ, and PGR protein expression in melatonin-treated cats, supporting inflammatory and hormonal alterations. Additionally, increased mRNA expression of progesterone receptor isoforms PR-A and PR-B was detected in ovarian tissues of melatonin-treated cats (p < 0.05). The results indicate that while melatonin implants effectively suppress estrus in female cats, they may induce uterine inflammation and alter the hormonal and immune profiles of reproductive tissues. These findings highlight the need for further investigation into the long-term safety and mechanisms of melatonin's effects on reproductive health

    Inclusive education through the critical action research (CAR) approach

    This study investigates how Critical Action Research (CAR) was applied in a project involving international cooperation to promote inclusive practices in schools. The ‘We Are All The Same’ Erasmus Project, which involved five schools in four countries and included teacher and student participation in planning and implementation, was evaluated as an example of how CAR enhanced inclusive thinking and practices. The effects of the CAR-based project on the inclusive thinking of the teachers and students were examined in particular. Thematic analysis of the data collected during the two-year project indicated that CAR promoted cooperation and participation for inclusive education in schools, learning about and tolerance for different cultures, and enhanced participating teachers’ reflections on their professional development. A significant emphasis of this study was on its international dimension, by which CAR supported learning about and having tolerance for different cultures in inclusive schools. International participant-oriented studies have been rare in the literature, and this study is expected to provide a model for carrying out projects involving cooperation among international participants to exchange ideas about and promote inclusive education
