    No full text

Effect of Age on the Pharmacokinetics of Marbofloxacin Following Intravenous Administration in Calves

The aim of this study was to compare the pharmacokinetics of marbofloxacin after intravenous (IV) administration of a single dose of 10 mg/kg to calves of different ages. The study was carried on 1- (n = 6), 2- (n = 6), and 4-month-old (n = 6) Montofon calves. Plasma concentrations of marbofloxacin were measured using HPLC, and pharmacokinetic data were calculated by non-compartmental analysis. The elimination half-life (t1/2ʎz), volume of distribution at steady state (Vdss), total clearance (ClT), and area under the concentration-versus time curve (AUC0–∞) values of marbofloxacin in 1-month-old calves were 10.62 h, 1.03 L/kg, 0.08 L/h/kg, and 127.90 h*μg/mL, respectively. While the t1/2ʎz (from 10.62 to 3.36 h) and AUC0–∞ (from 127.90 to 47.35 h*μg/mL) decreased in parallel with the age of the calves, ClT (from 0.08 to 0.21 L/h/kg) increased. The Vdss of marbofloxacin was higher in 1- and 2-month-old calves compared to 4-month-old calves. After IV administration of marbofloxacin at a dose of 10 mg/kg, an ƒAUC0–24/MIC90 ratio of ≥ 125 was obtained for bacteria with MIC90 values of ≤ 0.60, ≤ 0.39 and ≤ 0.27 μg/mL in 1-, 2-, and 4-month-old calves, respectively. These results show that the antibacterial effect of marbofloxacin, which has concentration-dependent activity, decreases due to age-related pharmacokinetic changes and that the 10 mg/kg dose should be reviewed according to the MIC90 value of the bacteria

Post parturient hemoglobinuria in a flock of Akkaraman sheep

    No full text
Postpartum hemoglobinuria (PPH) is a rare but potentially serious metabolic disorder in small ruminants, and cases in sheep are rarely reported. This case report describes an outbreak of PPH associated with hypophosphatemia in a flock of meat-producing ewes. The case involved a 4-year-old Akkaraman ewe that developed reddish urine, weakness, anorexia, and mild dehydration several weeks after lambing. A review of the herd’s history revealed that multiple ewes, particularly those that had produced triplets, had exhibited similar clinical signs, and several had died in the preceding days. The diet was found to be insufficient in terms of mineral content, and signs of pica were noted in the flock, suggesting a chronic imbalance in the diet's mineral content. Diagnostic evaluation included physical examination, hematology, biochemistry, blood smear analysis, and urine testing. Hypophosphatemia along with decreased calcium, magnesium, and potassium levels was detected. Hemoglobinuria was confirmed through urine centrifugation and an ammonium sulphate precipitation test, and other potential causes of pigmenturia were excluded based on clinical and laboratory findings. Together, these findings supported a diagnosis of PPH secondary to dietary phosphorus deficiency. There was no evidence of parasitic or infectious hemolytic disease. Treatment consisted of intramuscular phosphorus supplementation, subcutaneous calcium and magnesium preparations, and supportive therapy. All affected animals responded positively, with complete clinical recovery observed after five days of treatment. A vitamin and mineral supplement was subsequently added to the animals diet to prevent recurrence, and no new cases were reported during the subsequent one-year follow-up period. This case demonstrates that PPH, although rare in sheep, can pose a significant health challenge to flocks with inadequate nutrition. Even moderate reductions in serum phosphorus may predispose susceptible animals to hemolysis, underscoring the variability in individual tolerance. The present report highlights the importance of balanced dietary mineral intake, proper postpartum monitoring, and early therapeutic intervention to prevent losses associated with PPH in sheep.</p

Age-Related Differences in Root Migration and Lesion Formation After Third-Molar Coronectomy

    No full text
Background: Surgical extraction of third molars related to the inferior alveolar nerve can cause paraesthesia. With coronectomy, the full extraction can be achieved without complications or with minimal complications. The present study aimed to compare the amount of eruption and the parameters of edema, interincisal clearance, and pain in coronectomy procedures performed in patient in different age groups and to evaluate the development of endodontic lesion. Material/Methods: Seventy-three patients aged 18-55 years were included in the study. The patients were divided into 2 age groups: 18-30 years (n=40) and 31-55 years (n=33). After performing the coronectomy, the roots were left in place. Interincisal opening, percentage of edema, and pain scores were recorded preoperatively and on the 3rd and 7th postoperative days. Panoramic radiographs were taken at 6 months to assess root migration. Results: The distance of interincisal opening and the percentage of edema on the 3rd day were lower in the 18-30 age group (P0.05). In the 18-30 age group, the pain scores on the 3rd and 7th days were higher (P<0.001). Root migration in the 18-30 age group was 2.50 +/- 0.42 mm and 2.26 +/- 0.56 mm in the 31-55 age group. No significant difference was found between the 2 groups (P=0.288). There was no endodontic lesion formation detected during the 6-month follow-up. Conclusions: Coronectomy is a practicable approach for mesio-angular impacted third molars in close proximity to inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) in individuals aged 18-55 years old
