Effect of Jaloukavacharana (Leech therapy) on Reconstructive Flaps - A Review
Jaloukas have been used medically for thousands of years dating back to ancient time. Today medicinal leeches are mostly used after Sandhana Karma i.e., in plastic and Reconstructive surgeries for the salvage of free, pedicled and even microvascular anastomosed flaps having venous congestion. The aim of this study is to spotlight on the role of leech therapy after Sandhanakarma. The systemic review of literature was conducted from the online databases and the results obtained in the patients after leech therapy were observed. This study has confirmed the excellent and predictable healing after Jaloukavacharana over the congested flaps. The benefits depend on these main properties of the medicinal leech like bloodletting action during active suction of blood, passive oozing of the wound for 1-2 days and injection of biologically active substances with the saliva into the host. Hence leech therapy is safe, easy to use, beneficial and cost-effective treatment modality to save flaps and reattached body parts in plastic and reconstructive surgery
The Intersection of Ayurveda and Genomics: Exploring Ayurgenomics for Personalized Health Solutions
In Ayurveda, Prakriti refers to an individual\u27s inherent constitution or natural state, determined at conception by the unique balance of the three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This constitution governs an individual\u27s physical, mental, and emotional characteristics throughout life. Understanding one\u27s Prakriti is key to personalized health approaches in Ayurveda, guiding diet, lifestyle, and treatment choices to maintain balance. The concept of genome can be loosely aligned with Prakriti in Ayurveda. Just as the genome contains the genetic code that dictates physical and biological traits, Prakriti determines one\u27s physiological and psychological tendencies. Both systems emphasize the importance of individuality in health, with Ayurveda focusing on maintaining the balance of Doshas to prevent disease, much like genomics seeks to understand individual genetic variability for personalized medicine. Together, Prakriti and genome offer complementary insights into personalized health, rooted in ancient wisdom and modern science. Aim & Objective: To evaluate the Ayurvedic genetic concepts of Prakriti in relation to evidence based studies. Materials and Methods: Information extracted from various classics (Charak Samhita, Shusruta Samhita, Asthanga Sanghra, Asthanga Hridya) & Published information on recent articles in PubMed, Google scholar, Scope med & Dhara online data base were taken into consideration for review purpose. Reported data was analyzed & represented for current review. Conclusion: Ayurgenomics help to build personalised base treatment purpose for each entity of human beings in smart and efficient manner
A clinical experience in the management of Eka Kushta - A Case Study
Kushta is the broad spectrum word used in Ayurveda to describe all the skin diseases under one heading, which is mainly classified into Mahakushta and Kshudra Kushta. Ekakushta is one among the Kshudra Kushta. It is of prime importance due to its chronicity and severity which involves larger extent of the body. In contemporary science, Ekakushta can be compared to Plaque Psoariasis, In the present case study, we have reported 39 years old male patient came with the complaints of severe dryness of the skin along with white scaly powdery discharged skin lesions all over the body associated with severe itching. The treatment protocol adopted here are Antah Parimarjana Chikitsa (Shodhana) and Bahir Parimarjana Chikitsa (Sarvanga Pariseka and Jaloukavacharana) and Shamanoushadhis. After treatment, patient got satisfactory results and complaints are reduced by 60-70%
A Literary Review of Kansya (Bell Metal)
Kansya is a metallic alloy known as Bell metal worldwide typically comprised of 78% copper and 22% tin. The classical texts divided Loha or Dhatus into three categories i.e., Shuddha Loha, Puti Loha, and Mishra Loha. Kansya is popularly categorized under Mishra Loha. As per the description available in Rasa Granthas Kansya constitutes of Tamra (Copper) and Vanga (Zinc) in a 4:1 proportion. Kansya was processed into Bhasma through the Shodhana and Marana processes. Aim and Objectives: To review classical literature on Kansya along with pharmaceutical process of Shodhana and Marana for preparation of Kansya Bhasma. Material and Method: All the classical literature in Rasagrantha, Samgraha Grantha, textbook of Ayurveda and Rasashastra regarding Kansya Bhasma. Observation and Result: The classical literature revealed that synonyms, vernacular name and type of Kansya from various classical text. The pharmaceutical process like Kansya Nirman Vidhi, Grahyagrahyatva Lakshana, Shodhana and Marana procedure is mentioned by various Acharyas. Therapeutic uses of Kansya Bhasma also mentioned in various text. Conclusion: This review was the compilation of information about Kansya compiled from different classical Rasa Shastra Texts. On reviewing the text, no or very little research information was quoted in regard to Kansya. There need to explore further study on Kansya Bhasma
Ayurvedic Strategies for Managing Psoriatic Arthritis [Vatarakta] - A Case Study
Psoriatic arthritis [PsA] is a chronic and progressive inflammatory disease that impacts the skin, joints, and entheses. In 60-70% of cases, psoriasis precedes joint disease in 15-20% of cases, In India the prevalence has been reported as 8.7%. In Ayurveda, PsA can be compared with Vatarakta. Vata and Rakta Dosha play a significant role in Vatarakta. However, it’s important to note that the pathogenesis of Vatarakta involves an amalgamation of deeper Dhatu. A 48-year-old female patient presented with the complaints of severe itching, pinkish rashes characterized by silvery scaling behind the right ear and over the chest, which had persisted for four years. Additionally, the patient experienced pain and stiffness in the joints of her hands [specifically, PIP & DIP joints] and lower back for the past two months. Despite having previously undergone various topical and oral treatments, there were no discernible signs of improvement. The patient was diagnosed with PsA, and subsequently treated with a regimen included Shodhana, Shamana, and Pathya-Apathya. After undergoing Classical Ayurvedic management, the patient experienced improvement in symptoms. In Ayurveda by addressing the root cause through Shodhana, Shamana and Pathya-Apathya offers valuable insights for managing PsA
An efficacy of different Taila used in Janubasti in the management of Janusandhigata Vata - A Systemic Review
Background: Janusandhigata Vata, a pathological condition similar to osteoarthritis of the knee, primarily affects elderly persons due to Dhatukshaya, resulting in pain, swelling, and restricted movement, significantly impacting daily activities. Currently, the treatments of knee osteoarthritis are often symptomatic, expensive and have side effects, making Janubasti a valuable alternative, especially in developing countries. Numerous studies have explored the clinical efficacy of various Taila (medicated oils) used in Janubasti for treating Janusandhigata Vata. This review aims to analyze the effectiveness of these medicated oils in the management of the condition. Objective: To review the articles published on Janubasti for the evaluation of the efficacy of various medicated oils utilized in Janubasti for the management of Janusandhigata Vata and improving the healthcare practice. Materials and Methods: The articles are screened from different electronic databases including MEDLINE, Google Scholar, PubMed Central, etc. and clinical trials published till September 30, 2024. using a strategy designed to optimize the open labelled parallel arm randomized clinical trial. The search terms used were Janusandhigata Vata, Janubasti, Taila, arthritis, osteoarthritis. Results: For this purpose, 343 articles were searched, 172 were screened after removal of duplication, 131 were excluded, 42 full text articles were assessed for eligibility. Out of 42 articles 5 were included in review. Conclusion: Janubasti is one of the modalities of treatment commonly adopted in the management of Janusandhigata Vata. Research has shown that Janubasti with Taila gives encouraging results in relieving the signs and symptoms of Janusandhigata Vata
Conceptual study of Shiro Dhara Procedure - A Review Article
The man of 21st century is breathing under various stresses, strains and anxiety. Co-ordination between ambitions and capabilities is no more seen. People may experience poor concentration, lower productivity and poorer work quality as a result of this stress. In comparison to the treatment of different systems of medicine, Ayurveda has a very good approach towards the treatment of these problems by both internal and external medications. So, to overcome this problem a review of Ayurveda text regarding Shiro Dhara was done. Indication, Contraindication, Procedure, Precautions and therapeutic efficacy of Shiro Dhara were noted during this study
Comparative Study of Marketed Samples of Svarnamakshika Bhasma an Ayurvedic Medicinal preparation, using XRF and XRD Analysis
Svarnamakshika Bhasma is an Ayurvedic medicinal preparation widely used by Ayurvedic practitioners for the management of various ailments. Svarnamakshika Bhasma needs to be prepared from Svarnamakshika, a mineral product identified and defined as Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India (API). Minimum quantities of Iron, Copper and Sulfur, the three major elements necessary to be present in the Svarnamakshika (chalcopyrite), are prescribed as Pharmacopeial quality standard in the API monograph. Since included in the API, it is mandatory for the manufacturer to use Svarnamakshika (chalcopyrite) as specified in the API for preparation of Svarnamakshika Bhasma. However, it is generally observed that Svarnamakshika (chalcopyrite) complying with the standards prescribed by API is rarely found used for preparation of Svarnamakshika Bhasma. On this background seven samples of Svarnamakshika Bhasma comprising five marketed and two prepared by research scholars along with two samples of raw Svarnamakshika collected from research scholars were analysed in this study by using XRF and XRD analysis. The study indicates that only one marketed sample appears to have been prepared using Svarnamakshika (chalcopyrite) of pharmacopeial standard prescribed by API
Satvavajaya - An Emerging Boon to Combat Stress
The unforgiving pace and complexity in today’s life is greatly challenging our ability to live healthier and fully in the present era. Today the world we live is full of competition and frustration to achieve the desired, leading to emotional stress and strain which adversely affects our physical, mental, social and spiritual health too. As per Acharya Charaka, Chinta (stress) and Ati-Chintanam (overthinking) are the causes of Rasovaha Srotodushti which ultimately become the aetiological factor for many of the diseases. Prolonged or inadequate response to stressors can impair the growth and development of the human body resulting in endocrine, metabolic, autoimmune, and psychological disorders. Number of research shows that untreated chronic stress results in serious health conditions, while finding positive and healthy means to manage it, may reduce the risks. In Ayurveda along with Panchakarma techniques like Shirodhara, Abhyanga etc., Medhya Rasayanas like Shankhpushpi, Brahmi etc., Satvavjaya Chikitsa plays an important role in the management of many mental ailments including stress. The word Satvavjaya constitutes of two words Satva meaning consciousness or mind and Avjaya meaning to conquer or win over. It aims to control mind (Manonigraha) and to restrain it from unwholesome thoughts or perceptions (Ahita Arthas). It is a unique non pharmacological treatment modality which adopts a comprehensive psychosomatic-spiritual approach to maintain the normalcy of mental health. Among all available techniques prevailing for control over mind, yoga offers one of the best methods as it stresses over Chittavritti Nirodha (control of mind from stressful thoughts)
Studies on genesis of Prameha from Amajirna w.s.r. to biochemical parameters
Background: In classical text it had been highlighted that Amajirna is root cause to produce Prameha. Musta is drug which combat Amajirna and it also effective to cure Prameha. So, this gives reasons for need of the present study and also reason for selection of topic. Aim: To evaluate the pathogenesis of Prameha from Amajirna and the efficacy of Musta (Cyperous rotundus) in both Amajirna and Prameha. Material and Methods: This study is an open label, randomized, interventional, comparative, prospective, controlled clinical trial. In the present study the patient of Prameha were enrolled following the subjective criteria of Prameha. A total of 60 patients of Prameha were selected from the OPD and IPD of Shyamadas Vaidya Shastra Pith Hospital, Kolkata, West Bengal, and randomly allocated with a computerized randomization method into two groups. Those selected patients were subjected for a confirmatory biochemical analysis of FBS and PPBS. The prediabetic person was interrogated for Amajirna as a past history or present illness, by the subjective criteria of Amajirna. In group A (n= 30), Musta Churna was given for 90 days and in group B (n= 30), Pippali Churna was given for 90 days. Before treatment and after treatment data FBS, PPBS, HBA1C, SGOT, SGPT, serum amylase, serum lipase and alkaline phosphatase enzyme levels were recorded for statistical analysis. This record of assessment was taken at 0, 30, 60 and 90 days. Wilcoxon signed rank test; unpaired t-test were applied. Result: Both groups showed statistically significant (p<0.05) improvement in chief complaints of Prameha, Amajirna, FBS, PPBS, HBA1C, SGOT, SGPT, serum amylase, serum lipase and alkaline phosphatase. Conclusion: On percentage wise comparison, better relief was found in Group-A i.e., Musta Churna was found to be more effective in all the subjective and objective parameters than Group-B (Pippali Churna)
