De-bordering solidarities: Using eco-craftivism as an eco-social pedagogy in primary education
Critical social pedagogy has developed in a manner that is both complex and situationally embedded, but manifesting common threads of inclusion, participation and care in pursuit of social justice and well-being. Solidarity sits at the heart of the critical social pedagogical project, though not without contestation around the nature of its deployment. Eco-social pedagogy broadens the concerns of critical social pedagogy, foregrounding the importance of ecological solidarities, in conjunction with intra-human solidarities, in recognition of the interdependency of social and ecological needs. This article argues that eco-social pedagogy would benefit from an even fuller ‘de-bordering’ of solidarity, incorporating a third solidarity – a solidarity with things. Societal transformation for a just sustainability can be supported by an eco-social pedagogy that builds learning opportunities at the intersection of these three solidarities. Drawing on data from a project with 120 UK pupils, aged eight to nine, we discuss the role that eco-craftivism may serve as an eco-social pedagogy, functioning as a catalyst for developing holistic, de-bordered solidaristic understandings, motivations and actions in the face of our current ecological and social justice crisis. We demonstrate how a solidarity with things can build a more holistic and collective narrative, serving as a gateway towards ecological and intra-human solidarities

The acceptability of musculoskeletal community appointment days: A mixed‐methods service evaluation
Background: Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions represent an increasing challenge within the NHS. Rising demand has driven a national shift towards more community‐based care and supported self‐management. Community Appointment Days (CAD) are community‐based, full‐day events providing access to clinical expertise, community partners and voluntary sector services. The collaborative ethos facilitates a personalised and holistic approach to musculoskeletal health. This evaluation aimed to explore the acceptability of the CAD model. Methods: Following a CAD in the Southwest of England, patient experience was collected using the Friends and Family test and CollaboRATE measure for level of shared decision‐making. Interviews were conducted with patients, and a focus group was held with staff. The Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA) informed the interview and focus group guides, and data analysis. Thematic analysis employed a hybrid deductive/inductive approach. Results: The CAD was attended by 130/160 (81%) patients. Experience measures were completed by 97/130 (75%) patients. The Friends and Family test demonstrated that most patients were ‘extremely likely’ (n = 63, 65%) or ‘likely’ (n = 32, 33%) to recommend a CAD. The average CollaboRATE score was 10.8/12. One‐to‐one interviews were completed with 13 patients, and a focus group with 10 staff. Four themes were identified: (1) a positive response to the CAD ethos; (2) the importance of effective planning and communication; (3) effective implementation of the CAD; and (4) potential impact and integration with existing musculoskeletal pathways. Conclusion: The CAD was perceived as an acceptable, personalised, and holistic model of care that supports self‐management and cross‐sector collaboration for supporting MSK health
Black-grass monitoring using hyperspectral image data is limited by between-site variability
Many important ecological processes play out over large geographic ranges, and accurate large-scale monitoring of populations is a requirement for their effective management. Of particular interest are agricultural weeds, which cause widespread economic and ecological damage. However, the scale of weed population data collection is limited by an inevitable trade-off between quantity and quality. Remote sensing offers a promising route to the large-scale collection of population state data. However, a key challenge is to collect high enough resolution data and account for between-site variability in environmental (i.e., radiometric) conditions that may make prediction of population states in new data challenging. Here, we use a multi-site hyperspectral image dataset in conjunction with ensemble learning techniques in an attempt to predict densities of an arable weed (Alopecurus myosuroides, Huds) across an agricultural landscape. We demonstrate reasonable predictive performance (using the geometric mean score-GMS) when classifiers are used to predict new data from the same site (GMS = 0.74-low density, GMS = 0.74-medium density, GMS = 0.7-High density). However, even using flexible ensemble techniques to account for variability in spectral data, we show that out-of-field predictive performance is poor (GMS = 0.06-low density, GMS = 0.13-medium density, GMS = 0.08-High density). This study highlights the difficulties in identifying weeds in situ, even using high quality image data from remote sensing

Interpreting the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages: Sign languages as regional and minority languages
Sign languages have historically been excluded from legal frameworks designed to protect linguistic diversity, such as the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages (the Charter). While the Charter aims to safeguard regional and minority languages, sign languages have been omitted due to misconceptions about their linguistic status, their classification as ‘means of communication’ rather than minority languages with their own characteristics, and their frequent framing within disability rights rather than language rights. This paper critically examines the legal and policy frameworks surrounding sign languages and argues for their inclusion within the Charter.Drawing on linguistic, sociocultural, and legal analyses, the paper demonstrates that sign languages meet the criteria of regional and minority languages as outlined in the Charter. It explores the Council of Europe’s shifting stance on sign languages, from early dismissals to more recent acknowledgments of their significance, albeit without concrete action. The study highlights the sociohistorical and sociolinguistic significance of sign languages, their role in cultural identity, and the systemic exclusion faced by Deaf communities. Furthermore, the paper contends that the Charter’s flexible interpretative framework allows for the incorporation of sign languages, addressing past exclusions and aligning with contemporary understandings of linguistic diversity and human rights.Ultimately, this paper advocates for the formal recognition of sign languages under the Charter, urging the Council of Europe to establish a working group to address their protection and promotion. Such recognition would advance linguistic justice for Deaf communities, ensuring their full inclusion within Europe’s multilingual landscape
Blockchain platforms for decentralized peer-to-peer betting
Traditional and centralised online betting platforms are generally a black box and lack transparency, trust, and inclusivity. Despite theoretical advancements and the transformative potential of blockchain technology in the betting industry, the feasibility and efficiency of using blockchain and smart contracts in real-world betting scenarios have not been explored in existing empirical studies. This study develops a novel peer-to-peer betting platform using blockchain technology and smart contracts. The opportunities and challenges of using smart contracts in random outcome games and sports match predictions are investigated. Through deploying our proposed peer-to-peer betting platform on the Ethereum blockchain, we showcased its opportunities, including reducing labour costs and fraud manipulations; ensuring security, fairness, and inclusivity; and enhancing flexibility, adaptability, and customisation in different betting scenarios. Our study illuminates a path forward for the evolution of the betting industry and can act as a catalyst for future exploration and development in this field
Interconnectedness among cryptocurrencies and financial markets: A systematic literature review
This paper presents a systematic literature review of 137 peer-reviewed publications from 41 journals, examining the interconnectedness between cryptocurrencies and traditional financial markets. Using a rigorous three-stage methodology for study selection, we identify key research themes including spillover effects, volatility transmission, interdependence, hedge effectiveness, and safe-haven properties of cryptocurrencies. Our analysis reveals that GARCH-based models dominate early work on volatility and contagion, while more recent studies adopt advanced approaches, such as cross-quantilogram, wavelet coherence, and multifractal detrended cross-correlation, to capture non-linear, time-varying relationships without assuming stationarity. Our review offers three major contributions. First, we provide a comprehensive classification of the interconnectedness between different types of cryptocurrencies and financial markets, highlighting their evolving roles as hedges, safe havens, or diversifiers. Second, we synthesize empirical findings to show how spillovers, time-varying correlations, tail dependencies, and contagion risks intensify under major events, such as COVID-19, regulatory shifts, and geopolitical conflicts. Third, we draw attention to overlooked areas, including emerging market dynamics and macroeconomic determinants. We recommend that policymakers implement early warning systems and proactively monitor volatility and connectedness in crypto markets to reduce contagion risks and maintain financial stability. Policy frameworks should consider the unique features of crypto markets and the time-varying interlinkages between cryptos, commodities, fiat currencies, and equities. Investors, in turn, should track cryptocurrency price movements closely, as they provide valuable signals for forecasting broader market trends and improving portfolio risk management. These insights have practical implications for risk mitigation and decision-making in increasingly integrated financial systems
Food security and circular cities: Paradigmatic shifts, geographical and temporal scales, and participatory governance support to facilitate transitions towards ‘urban sustainability'
This article explores how the principles of circularity, applied to urban food systems, could contribute to catalysing a transition towards more sustainable cities, working on the premise that food security is a key pillar of urban resilience. In order to do so, it critically examines (i) circularity in the context of urban regeneration and why focusing on food could help to understand the sociopolitical and ecological dimensions of circularity; (ii) the geographical and temporal scales of urban circularity; and (iii) how ‘barometers of circularity’ could be built and integrated into participatory urban governance processes to support urban ecological transformations
