Emergence and orientation behavior of brood Trypodendron lineatum (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)
Emergence of <i>Trypodendron lineatum</i> from caged naturally infested host logs occurred from June 2 to August 27, 1969. Approximately 30% of the parent beetles emerged before June 30, when the first major brood emergence took place. The sporadic brood emergence was apparently influenced by maturation, and markedly by environmental temperature, A daily emergence. A total of 6,539 beetles emerged, with a male:female sex ratio of 0.997. Emergent brood beetles were hygronegative and strongly photopositive, indicating that behavioral reversals in both humidity and photic responses must occur since the beetles select and occupy moist, dark overwintering sites
Preliminary trials with Citrazon - a selective acaricide
Citrazon (Ethyl O-benzoyl 3 chloro-2, 6-dimethoxy benzohydroximate) was compared with two orangotin acaricides Plictran and Vendex for mite control on apples and pears. Citrazon controlled the phytophagous European red mite, <i>Panonychus ulmi</i> (Koch) as effectively as Plictran and Vendex and all were low in toxicity to the phytoseiid mites <i>Typhlodromus occidentalis</i> Nesbitt and <i>T. columbiensis</i> Chant. Unlike Plictran and Vendex, Citrazon was much less toxic to another predatory mite, <i>Zetzellia mali</i> Ewing, and to the pear rust mite, <i>Epitrimerus pyri</i> (Nal.)
A method for rearing the predaceous mite, Phytoseilus persimilis (Acarina: Phytoseiidae)
The predaceous mite, <i>Phytoseiulus persimilis</i> Athias-Henriot, was reared successfully in a darkened growth chamber on blotting paper on a freezer carton lid floated on water in a plastic saucer. Predators were fed with two-spotted spider mites collected from infested bean leaves with a mite brushing machine
Emergence of predator and parasites of the white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), from Engelmann spruce
Adult insects of 13 species emerged from 153 leaders of Engelmann spruce attacked by <i>Pissodes strobi</i> at two British Columbia locations. The most abundant species was the dipteran, <i>Lonchaea corticis</i>, a scavenger and predator of immature <i>P. strobi</i>. The most important primary parasites that attack 4th-instar larvae and pupae were the hymenopterans, <i>Dolichomitus terebrans nubilipennis</i>, <i>Bracon pini</i>, <i>Eurytoma pissodis</i>, and <i>Rhopalicus pulchripennis</i>. Competition for suitable hosts appears greatest between the two last-named species, since females exhibited agonistic behaviour when searching for oviposition sites
Control of the pear leaf blister mite and the pear rust mite (Acarina: Eriophyidae)
Delayed dormant applications of endosulfan plus oil or ethion plus oil gave excellent control of both the pear leaf blister mite. <i>Eriophyes pyri</i> (Pgst.). and the pear rust mite. <i>Epitrimerus pyri</i> (Nal.) Lime sulphur as a dormant spray gave excellent control of the pear leaf blister mite but the delayed dormant application gave poor control. Both applications of lime sulphur gave good control of the pear rust mite
The effect of height and density of sex pheromone traps on captures of male fruittree leafroller, Archips argyrospilus and threelined leafroller, Pandemis limitata (Lepid.: Tortricidae)
When sex pheromone traps in the upper third of a standard apple tree were compared with traps at head height, the upper traps captured far more fruittree leafroller moths (<i>Archips argyrospilus</i> (Walker) than the lower traps. The results with threelined leafroller (<i>Pandemis limitata</i> (Rob.) were reversed: traps at head height captured nearly twice as many moths as traps in the upper portion of a tree. Trap captures increased with trap/area up to 1 trap/ha. This density is probably sufficient for monitoring purposes
Leafrollers (Lepidoptera) on berry crops in the Lower Fraser Valley, British Columbia
A survey of tortricid leafrollers and other lepidopterous larvae with leafrolling habits on berry crops in the Lower Fraser Valley, B.C., revealed 16 species feeding on blueberry, four on cranberry, eight on raspberry and four on strawberry. The most abundant species were <i>Choristoneura rosaceana</i>, <i>Spilonota ocellana</i>, <i>Archips rosanus</i> and <i>Cheimophila salicella</i> on blueberry, <i>Operophtera bruceata</i>, <i>C. rosaceana</i> and <i>Acleris comariana</i> on rapsberry, <i>Rhopobota naevana</i> on cranberry, and <i>A. comariana</i> on strawberry. Some of the species have apparently not been reported previously as feeding on some of the berry crops. Four species previously reported as pests of berry crops in the Lower Fraser Valley were not found. Fields treated with insecticides early in the season, whether or not for leafrollers, had lower leafroller populations than untreated fields. There is no objective evidence that leafroller populations were sufficient to cause economic injury to any of the crops. Subjective observations confirm the economic importance of leafroller damage to cranberry and suggest that economic injury may occur on blueberry
Susceptiblity of crabapple cultivars to attack by the codling moth
A repository block of ornamental crabapples containing 87 cultivars was left unsprayed and evaluated for resistance to the codling moth, <i>Laspeyresia pomonella</i> (L.). Although there were considerable differences in susceptibility, none of the cultivars was resistant to codling moth attack. A number of trees escaped injury from the first generation, but all showed entries from the second generation in August
