Pest management concepts and control of tick paralysis in British Columbia
Actual and potential methods for controlling and reducing paralysis of livestock and humans by the tick <i>Dermacentor andersoni</i> Stiles are analyzed, and assigned tentative "Geier ratings" of cost and effectiveness. Four broad categories of control are discussed: protection from toxins, prevention of engorgement, avoidance, and reduction in numbers of ticks. Some control methods are undesirable because of their effects on the eco-system, including game animals. More information is needed on immunology of mammals to tick toxins and tick feeding, on variations and genetics of paralysing ability in ticks, on range management in relation to paralysis, on the effects of herbicides on rodents and ticks, and on life-table parameters of ticks and rodents

<i>Aphidius rubifolii</i> n. sp. is described from coastal British Columbia. The parasitoid appears to be specific to <i>Masonaphis</i> species that feed on thimble berry, <i>Rubus parviflorus</i> Nutt
Influence of temperature inversion on development of spruce beetle, Dendroctonus obesus (Mannerheim) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)
In the East Kootenay region of British Columbia, spruce logs infested by <i>Dendroctonus obesus</i> (Mannerheim) were placed beside thermographs at three sites. Throughout the summer, the mean and minimum air temperatures were higher on a mountain slope than in two valley bottoms at similar or lower elevations. Beetle development was faster on the mountain slope, where it continued until frost occurred in October, at which time 96% of the progeny were mature. In the lower valley bottom the minimum temperature fell 3.9 and 2.8∞C (7 and 5∞F.) below freezing on successive nights in August and larval development stopped. In the valley bottoms only 13 and 9% of the broods matured before winter. Temperature conditions that allow most broods of <i>D. obesus</i> to mature in one season may result in a critical addition to the normal number of beetles that mature after 2 years' development

Occurrence of Phytoseiid mites (Acarina: Phytoseiidae) in apple orchards in south central British Columbia
Sprayed and nonsprayed apple trees in the interior of British Columbia were sampled from 1967-70 for mites belonging to the family Phytoseiidae. <i>Typhlodromus occidentalis</i> Nesbitt and <i>T. columbiensis</i> Chant were the only species commonly found in sprayed orchards. <i>T. occidentalis</i> was more abundant. In nonsprayed orchards, <i>T. caudiglans</i> Schuster was practically the only phytoseiid found in the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys whereas it and <i>Phytoseius macropilis</i> (Banks) were the most common mites found in samples from higher rainfall districts bordering the Shuswap and Arrow Lakes. <i>T. pyri</i> Scheuten was less widely distributed than the above mites but was found in large numbers on nonsprayed trees in the Shuswap area and at Summerland in a dwarf apple orchard that is irrigated by overhead sprinklers

A new Clastoptera from sagebrush (Rhynchota: Homoptera: Cercopidae)
<i>Clastoptera atrapicata</i> n. sp. (Homoptera: Cercopidae) is described from sage brush (<i>Artemisia tridentata</i> Nutt) in central British Columbia and Oregon. This species is closely allied to <i>C. brunnea</i> Ball, and, like it. exhibits considerable variation in colour pattern of the face. The ovipositor and colour varieties are illustrated and compared with those of its related species
Pre-overwintering mortality in the larch casebearer, Coleophora laricella (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae), on western larch in Northern Idaho.
During 1976, continuous sampling of the same population cohort showed a 68% mortality in the pre-wintering larch casebearer, <i>Coleophora laricella</i>, in northern Idaho. The major mortality factors were density-independent; these were: premature needle drop caused by the needle diseases <i>Meria laricis</i> and <i>Hypodermella laricis</i> (18%); non-viable eggs (10%); and dislodgment of the eggs from the branch (10%). Other factors were: predation, desiccation, ripening and fall of the needles, intraspecific competition, loss of larvae moving between needles, and larch-willow rust
Laboratory evaluation of Geocoris bullatus and Nabis alternatus as predators of Lygus
Adults of <i>Geocoris bullatus</i> were not effective predators against late nymphs and adults of <i>Lygus</i>, but adults of <i>Nabis alternatus</i> were effective against these stages. Both predators were effective against the young <i>Lygus</i> nymphs. Males of <i>N. alternatus</i> were almost as successful as females against small prey but were less effective against the late-stage <i>Lygus</i>
